Am I too much ? Asking DH to do his business in the spare toilet

funnypost · 10/06/2025 07:05

This is a funny one. We have 3 and a half bathrooms in our house. 3 upstairs and 1 little bathroom downstairs.

upstairs there are 2 en suites- one off the master bedroom and one off the guest room, plus a family bathroom.

I loathe walking into a bathroom and it being smelly. I just can’t deal with it. It’s gross.

at weekends, DH tends to do his business in the master en suite. But this is where all our stuff is. I hate not being able to go up there or if I really need to, having to breathe in the disgusting smell.

so I’ve asked him, why can’t you just use one of the bathrooms that’s just completely not in use ? Why do you need to use the bathroom that’s most in use by me and also near our bedroom, which also makes the idea of it gross.

I would just never dream of doing it. I try to be discreet and use one of the bathrooms that’s not got all our stuff in.

men just don’t think like this right ? My DH thinks I’m ridiculous but also finds it funny and has complied.

what does everyone think ? Do I sound like I have a stick up my bum ? I just can’t stand it. I’m really funny about it and think all traces should be covered up. DH thinks I’m ridiculous and that it’s a normal thing in life and I’m way too uptight.

That's men for you l'm.afraid. Who xan make the biggest stink

MEANT TO BE A JOKE FOR ALL WITH A SENSE OF HUMOUR BY PASS AND WOKES!!

Sounds as though something has crawled up up there in the middle of the night and died.

I think you have every right to ask him to use a different bathroom, and a crash course in keeping the bathroom window open when he evacuates.

As for the smell. It would make me want to vomit It may well be a nstural body function, but your family alll share the same space

Have you tried a spray made up of water and esssential oils?

Think lemongrass, lavender and lime are helpful. Google it

If you want a really effective powerful room speay.Try Neutradol. £1.50 a can from J. Sainsbury Fast acting and long lasting

Caligirl80 · 16/06/2025 07:57

It's his house too - presumably you've lived together for a while? Why is this now only just an issue???

Get some air freshener, or some loo scent stuff. Or buy him a Japanese loo seat and have it installed in the guest room - he won't be dropping the kids off at the pool in the master suite again if you do that.

Cosyblankets · 16/06/2025 08:03

What is he eating that it smells so badly

WhiteJasmin · 23/06/2025 07:30

Use poo-pourri

PinkyFlamingo · 10/06/2025 07:11

He's not "doing his business", it's a normal bodily function that all humans do. And poo smells. Yes even yours! Not many people have 3 bathrooms either!!
Not sure what makes it "gross" being near you bedroom either, he's not doing it on the bed!

Three, and a half 🤐

Bluddyellfire · 16/11/2025 08:57

Errr... simple working class northerner here, what's a 'half bathroom' please, can somebody enlighten me? I don't think we have those up here 🤔

lazyarse123 · 16/11/2025 09:11

What's the point of a toilet if you can't shit in it? I don't like en suites because I would rather have extra storage and am more than capable of walking to a main bathroom unless I lived in a mansion and then I'd have extra proper bathrooms.

Ah! A downstairs loo! Some of my professional friends are familiar with these. Much obliged 😁

LBFseBrom · 16/11/2025 09:20

Buy some of that stuff you put down the loo before a poo which takes the smell away. It's been advertised on telly, I do actually have some but can't find it (I live on my own now anyway). Keep air fresheners in bathroom of course and tell him to be sure to put lid down afterwards. Make sure he keeps door closed. It should be OK if all that is done. The man is entitled to use his own en suite loo!

The smell doesn't bother me much, it's natural and we all do it but when I was in a house (I downsized last year to a flat), I used to ask that poos were not done in the downstairs loo, only upstairs. I didn't want shit smell in the hall if people were likely to be coming round; for me personally it didn't matter.

People with only one toilet in a house manage, I'm sure you can. It really isn't a big deal.

Daisydiary · 10/06/2025 07:09

It’s a bit odd to poo in the en suite if someone is in bed just through the door, isn’t it? Especially when other toilets are available!

No not really that why you close the door

Notmyreality · 16/11/2025 09:20

Op is the one with the problem and so should use one of her several other bathrooms.

funnypost · 11/06/2025 13:21

No one is going to show any appreciation for my POOTSD comment ??really ? I was so proud !

No, but you obviously have quite extreme issues with it, so I refer to my earlier post that it’s really your problem to solve not your DH. Get some therapy.

Tina294 · 16/11/2025 09:26

Get him to improve his diet, it's not normal for poo to smell that bad or for that long.

OP, you call it 'do your business' which yes, very much suggests you have a stick up your ass.

I'm always amazed at people on here 'I can have my husbands cock in my mouth but I can't cope with him pooing in our toilet/using my toothbrush/sharing my towel'.

I think most of MN would be much better off living alone tbh.

Oh

from June that someone has resurrected because they want to know what a half bathroom is. 🙄

tripleginandtonic · 16/11/2025 09:31

CheeseIsMyIdol · 16/11/2025 10:30

I don't care what he or anyone else thinks! If he's going in, he knows what he's about to do so why not consider his partner and use another toilet seeing as you have others and not compromise his partner. You are right!

Separate bedrooms and separate bathrooms are the solution for us but we do both use the downstairs toilet when we need to and just leave the extractor running for a while

tooloololoo · 11/04/2026 15:02

I would move all my things to the other en suite and make it my bathroom
