Friend in a mood with me because of comment I made at dinner

Out with friends last night - one has been travelling so I’ve not seen them for over a year. She asked me why I’m not on Instagram anymore; I replied I turned 30 years old and grew up - she laughed.

Another friend who was present (and uses IG) said my reply was rude and that I insinuated anyone over 30 who uses IG needs to grow up.

That’s not what I was saying (although I do find it all a bit cringe these days if I’m honest!).

Do you think my reply was inappropriate or did my friend over react?

I'd probably not even notice if a someone wasn't on Instagram 🤣

queenMab99 · 07/06/2025 23:02

I'm 75 and I don't use Instagram, I think it is full of crap and wannabe influencers. You were just being honest.

JustFeedMeCake · 07/06/2025 23:02

You were rude. As if people over 30 aren’t on instagram 🙄

whynotmereally · 07/06/2025 23:02

I’m in my forties and love Instagram. I watch lots of comedians and memes. Very funny.

EggnogNoggin · 07/06/2025 23:04

Well, was it a thoughtless comment that you have now had time to reflect on and can see was a dig at people like your friend who "haven't grown up and still use Instagram" or was it a deliberate dig?

InWalksBarberalla · 07/06/2025 23:05

That’s not what I was saying (although I do find it all a bit cringe these days if I’m honest!).

Oh come off it - that's exactly what you where saying. What else could you have been saying by: She asked me why I’m not on Instagram anymore; I replied I turned 30 years old and grew up

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 07/06/2025 23:05

YABU. That was a pretty immature and childish remark for someone who claims to be 'grown up.' I bet you sneer at adults who like Disney, and who play videogames too. Not a good look @Mall03

Outright snobbery against something just because YOU don't like it /use it anymore is just not cool.

MoominMai · 07/06/2025 23:06

HeyWiggle · 07/06/2025 22:57

Ridiculous reason to be in a mood with you

Agree. @Mall03 Gonna buck the trend of opinion here but you’re a grown person allowed to have your own opinions and not be scared to be yourself. It’s not like you made some deeply offensive or outrageous blasphemous comment! The friend it was directed at laughed but there’s always one that gets offended on behalf of another 🙄. That’s happened to me occasionally and Ive feigned Pearl clutching outrage and then said my little bit about why I do it then probably made fun of them for something and then it’s done - over. No residual resentment or festering moods! It’s just banter and unfortunately this is where men generally are better not taking such minuscule things totally out of proportion.

maddening · 07/06/2025 23:06

Op exactly what did you mean by you are not on IG as "I turned 30 years old and grew up" then?

chatgptsbestmate · 07/06/2025 23:07

queenMab99 · 07/06/2025 23:02

I'm 75 and I don't use Instagram, I think it is full of crap and wannabe influencers. You were just being honest.

It's run by algorithms .....so what you watch and who you follow dictate, to a large degree, what you see

On tiktok you can tell the algorithm what you're not interested in, by holding the screen and clicking 'not interested '

Don't watch or follow crap and influencers and suddenly IG and tiktok are fun

🤩🤩

Picklechicken · 07/06/2025 23:09

Oh come on, you knew what you were doing. Shitty comment to make. Very mean girls ish.

LittleSoo · 07/06/2025 23:27

Branleuse · 07/06/2025 22:50

Heck. It was a bit rude.
Why is it cringe to use Instagram but not Mumsnet?

I'd be so embarrassed if someone caught me using Mumsnet, I hide my phone when I'm on it so no one sees me using it 🤣

Hsisbdh6383 · 07/06/2025 23:31

Your comment was condescending but she's overreacting by doing more than just rolling her eyes and moving on.

StarDolphins · 07/06/2025 23:37

Silly reason to get in a mard over. Who cares if others think IG is for under 30’s. Unless you have low self esteem or need validation of your choices, just do what you like!

UANBU op!

DaisiesAndDonuts · 07/06/2025 23:38

Get a grip everyone 😂 what a sorry world we live in. No one can have a joke anymore. That comment wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest

ThatCalmCat · 07/06/2025 23:42

So what would you have said if she had asked you if you were on Mumsnet?

StarDolphins · 07/06/2025 23:43

JustFeedMeCake · 07/06/2025 23:02

You were rude. As if people over 30 aren’t on instagram 🙄

The over sensitive! Be confident with your choices, it doesn’t matter whether someone thinks over 30’s shouldn’t be on it! If you’re over 30, it’s time to do whatever you like without validation from others!

PinkArt · 07/06/2025 23:52

You made a judgemental comment, unnecessarily, and were called out on it. Own what you said.

londongirl12 · 07/06/2025 23:54

Yeah you sounded like a bitch

Gettygrip · 07/06/2025 23:54

Yes you are rude.

Sidebeforeself · 07/06/2025 23:58

Well you are far too old to be on Mumsnet ! Seriously please don’t think anyone is too old to do anything!

EllasNonny · 08/06/2025 00:06

At least own it.
Please tell me you haven't returned thinking you've reinvented the wheel, travel shaming the plebs?
I may or may not be projecting following the behaviour of a close friend before she realised how she was behaving after she climbed Everest spent a year off her face in Asia.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 08/06/2025 00:07

I would have taken it as a joke. That's what I say when people ask why I don't drink, "I grew up after leaving Uni". No one has ever (that I'm aware of), taken offence or thought I was bring rude. I usually say it light heartedly.

ScurryfungeSpuddle · 08/06/2025 00:11

You had a dig and got called out 🤷‍♀️

Good for your friend.

She's clearly not a MNetter or she would've sat in silence being 'gobsmacked' or 'shaking and crying' 😁

Instead she spoke up for herself.

GinAndJuice99 · 08/06/2025 00:11

I'd just laugh if someone said that. Mad all these people think it was mega-bitchy. Honestly, who cares?
