Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

I don't understand the whole turning the heating on thing like it's an event like lighting the fire. I've never had central heating that didn't have a thermostat.

It's coming on occasionally at the moment. I don't sit arouind in a t shirt either, I have a cardigan and fleece blanket, but I am not going to sit freezing in my own home.

It’s wet here today (Lancashire so not shocking it’s wet!) but 17c inside and comfortable
I’ve put the dehumidifier on though as drying washing

17 is just below the lowest recommended temperature for homes. My thermostat is set to 18 because I find that and an oodie are warm enough for me and the house. My heating would click itself on at 17, therefore. It’s definitely not ‘comfortable’ fir the majority of people.

I always dress for the weather. It saves a lot of money. I put on a jumper and a dressing gown before I even consider having the heating on, no matter what time of year it is.

But each to their own if others prefer to use their heating rather than add clothing.

Wearing a dressing gown over day clothes is a bit more than ‘dressing for the weather’.

Well our energy bills are the highest in Europe. People are being frugal now because they know come winter they'll need to have money to keep warm.

That’s a totally different argument. It’s not ‘dressing for the weather’.

See 18c outside I would be in a t shirt Grin
it was quite humid though or it felt that way

I think outside is different for some reason. Maybe because you get the sun on your skin? I’ve just gone from a linen shirt to a thicker long sleeved t shirt and it’s pushing 19 in my house.

18c outside is 18c in the shade, so unless you are hiding in the shadows you'd likely be benefitting from the additional warmth of the sun.

You're right about electricity, for the most part. However, our gas prices are the lowest compared to most EU countries.

justasking111 · 08/06/2025 13:05

And most of Europe has a warmer climate than us so doesn't require keeping warm in the summer. It's 28c plus in Spain and Portugal today. 25c in Moscow.

You are supposed to keep a window open on the vents. When my neighbour below me moved in. He had to get rid of the damp and mould from walls and a couple of kitchen units. As previous neighbour didn’t have any vents open. This is a flat where she lived for 13 years.

I temporarily close the vents if we have a storm of heavy winds as the whistling is awful

I only have patio doors in my lounge that don't have trickle vents. I refuse to open them when it's cold/raining outside.

Laura95167 · 08/06/2025 18:29

I would maybe put the heating on low to help dry my washing if it was raining outside because some of my clothes would get ruined in the tumble.

But otherwise I'm with the jumper/snuggly blanket crew

J3001 · 08/06/2025 18:50

I put mine on if cold and need washing dried at the same time

Cosyblankets · 08/06/2025 18:51

When you pay their bills you get a say in when they put the heating on.
You do you

Anyone who says ‘snuggly’ is not in my crew.

Nope. It’s just a bit grim. It’s not ‘snuggly’. It’s something you use if you can’t afford the heating - so pretty grim to romanticise it.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 08/06/2025 19:03

Honestly, the heating goes on if I'm cold. It's not often at this time of year but when it has been raining like it has this week the air in the house can feel cool and damp. The standing charge for gas is still going regardless so I may as well get some benefit out of it.

Panterusblackish · 08/06/2025 19:04

I've got multiple layers on and I'm freezing but can't bring myself to switch the heating on in June, seems wasteful. I've just added a blanket.

My in laws always have the heating set to 28. FIL sits round in boxers and a short sleeve shirt and complains about the massive bill.

Mil tells us that none of her friends heat their houses to the same extent and expresses faux naivety and giggles about it saying she simply cannot believe they dont heat their houses 24/7. She knows full well that many of them are widows on a budget whilst she is a multi millionaire but insists she has to wear a sleeveless nightie and sleep outside the covers so simply must have the heating on overnight.

Neither of them give a fuck about the planet.

Some people do genuinely need their heating on, but I suspect most could be a bit more environmentally conscious and not prance about barely clothed.

HeadlinesEnough · 08/06/2025 19:05

A year or so ago we had a really strange hot day in Feb. Should I have put the heating on because it was winter and the calendar was telling me to?

It's defo "mean girls" vibe to judge a word because you associate it with poor people. That's grim.

I mean not that I'd have an issue using a blanket because I was poor, CoL is an issue. But actually it's the central heating aggravates my allergies so unless it was very or I wanted to dry some washing I'd opt for a snuggly blanket.

I didn’t associate it with poor people. No point in discussing if you don’t get that.

The cost of energy is far too cheap in the UK. Some people have taken it upon themselves to assist the poor hard done by energy companies by increasing demand, hopefully helping to raise prices and boost their flagging profits. A second reason is the planet is heading for a catastrophic ice age in the coming decades and these people have decided to try and maximise their carbon footprint to boost the greenhouse effect and delay the ice age by several centuries or millenia. To increase the effectiveness of this, they will further increase their carbon emissions by all arranging to drive on as many roads as possible at the same time, keeping the UK top of the European league for traffic congestion, and after switching their engines on, will sit there faffing about on their phones whilst their engines are idling for several minutes, fuel is too cheap remember.

Well it might as well be true given my experience of living in SE England. 😂🙄

Mrsgreen100 · 08/06/2025 19:28

It’s crazy. It seems that jumpers and warm clothing just don’t have a place in the UK anymore. I run an air b and b
in one week guests had heat on constantly with short sleeves on
bonkers, they used 3 bottles or calor gas
that’s nearly 300 quid worth
its crazy in June
