Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

Our heating comes on at 16. My friend from Scotland comes down to stay and brings extra layers cos it's colder here than in her home.

I've gone hoodie, then duvet. Next I'll close the window. If it's still cold when I've added another jumper then I might light the fire tonight.

Actually the heating kicked in earlier....

RampantIvy · 08/06/2025 19:47

It’s crazy. It seems that jumpers and warm clothing just don’t have a place in the UK anymore

Please don't tar all of us with the same brush. I and most people I know will put on extra layers before turning the heating on.

croydon15 · 08/06/2025 20:11

I put the heating on in the morning as l hate a cold bathroom, simple

JohnTheRevelator · 08/06/2025 20:13

They're probably the same people who get on a hot bus and start slamming all the windows shut. I think 'If you're cold, wear a jacket/jumper/cardigan. Don't make the rest of us suffer on a hot, sticky bus'.

Why would you do layers before shutting the window? Madness. Also 16 is too low for the health of the house, never mind the people in it.

Edited

Or you could wear less. You said the bus was hot. Why do you need all the layers?

BoredZelda · 08/06/2025 20:20

I hate wearing jumpers.

EvilNextDoor · 08/06/2025 20:20

Our heating is electric…I’d need to put the night storage heaters on at least a day before it gets cold.

It was cold and wet enough yesterday I did debate on putting a fire on but decided against it.

I am a firm believer of I am an adult and if I want the heating on I will turn it on and if I had oil/gas i probably would have..

I hate wearing jumpers.

What would you wear instead?
A cardigan?
A jacket?
A hoodie?

Where are these cold places? I don’t live in the south and haven’t had my heating on for at least a month, but I would if I felt cold. I’ve had a summer weight duvet on for a couple of weeks too😊

I think various people have shared upthread where it has been unseasonably cold.

There are lots of replies upthread. I live on the edge of the Pennines and the weather hasn't been great for a couple of weeks. Our heating has only come on a couple of times, but it has been 11 degrees and raining here.

You're right about electricity, for the most part. However, our gas prices are the lowest compared to most EU countries.

I thought electricity prices were linked to gas prices?
So in theory, they should be a lot, lot lower (but profit eh).

CanILeaveMyJobPlease · 08/06/2025 21:33

I put the heating on whenever I feel.like.it! Because I spent my childhood freezing! And now I'm.am.adult i do what I want and I like having the heating on, so I will!

You're not completely wrong, because they are linked, however, gas is cheaper in the UK than most European countries.

This week we've had one day 18c. The other days 11-12c. In Wales.

So where on earth are these people who are putting their heating on? Is it in the UK?
I'm in Scotland and the weather hasn't been great recently but its nowhere near cold enough to put heating on.
Even in winter my thermostat is set so the heating doesn't come on until the temperature goes below 13°.
Putting warm clothing on is the normal reaction to cooler weather surely?

Im in Scotland too and my heating has been coming on all week . I refuse to feel cold

Greenshed · 08/06/2025 23:11

Our heating kicks in when the temp drops below a certain level, whatever the time of year. I hate being cold and so if the thermostat dictates it’s cold enough for the heating to come on, so be it. I’m like a previous poster, I’m not dictated by the time of year - if it’s cold, it’s cold. There’s always manual override if need be.
I appreciate and understand that there are people who can’t afford to have their heating on whenever needed, and I think that this is a situation that needs addressing urgently, as no one in the UK should be cold, and it’s a shameful situation that this is the case for many. I suppose that topic is for another thread. I sincerely hope I don’t come across as smug because I’m in the fortunate position to be able to put on my heating when needed, I really feel for people who can’t afford to - heating shouldn’t be a luxury, it’s a necessity.

I'm in the far northern Highlands. It's been dropping to around 6 degrees overnight, very windy and rainy.

ArtTheClown · 08/06/2025 23:25

Can I ask those who mentioned people that have the heating on "constantly" - how? Does it not switch off when it reaches target thermostat temperature and then on again when it drops only?

uncomfortablydumb60 · 09/06/2025 00:50

A dehumidifier is brilliant for warming up room
It's the damp that can make a room cold

NeedASafeSpace · 09/06/2025 00:58

My house is 15 right now, and I have a back door open for the dog and I am sat in a T-shirt. Am comfortable. I don't understand the folks having their heating come on at 16.

That's because they feel the cold more than you do. People are different. Also, there is a recommendation for a minimum indoor temperature of 18°c for health and to avoid damp and mould etc.
If it was 15°c in the workplace, employers would have to send people home. So suspect you are an outlier.

Well, good for you.

I don't understand the folks that are too warm at 15 degrees and are morally superior about people who feel the cold easily.

We are all different.

My house is 20 right now. I have a thick long cardigan on and a fleece over me, and I'm just about warm enough.
We're all different.
