Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

Good for you OP but I like my home to feel toasty all over when it’s cold and depressing. I’m a grown women I can decide for myself thanks !

hazelowens · 07/06/2025 20:52

We are in a big sandstone high ceiling house and when this house gets cold jumpers will not cut it but heating on for an hour is just enough to take the chill off the air so a cardigan or throw over you on the couch I'd perfect

HÆLTHEPAIN · 07/06/2025 20:55

I hate jumpers and sweaters. Our thermostat comes on when it drops below 20° and sometimes I have a blanket over me but that’s more for comfort. I choose what feels best in the moment.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 07/06/2025 21:03

I work from home in a bedroom. I had the radiator on on tuesday cos it was cold, its hard to type in gloves and my hands can be very cold

How do you manage when you have to leave the house in cold weather?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 07/06/2025 07:16

Indeed. It was very cold yesterday here and I had jeans, t, jumper but I was still chilly so the heating went on. Why does it bother you OP?

What temperature was it?

cherrycola66 · 07/06/2025 21:06

I do, if I’m cold I refuse to sit and be cold and uncomfortable and will not let my kids go cold, I would rather pay extortionate prices for my bills than be cold

allamberedover · 07/06/2025 21:10

I presume this isn't a genuine thread , the OP says

I don't see posts with pictures of people

How do you manage when you have to leave the house in cold weather?

I usually wear a (thick strap) vest top and a cardigan in colder weather - even when I go out - as mostly I’m in the car. Sometimes I wear my denim jacket instead of the cardigan to mix it up! If I’m going out properly, like for lunch or to the shopping centre, that might end up being a t shirt and blazer. Very rarely will I wear a coat. The last time was for a funeral in March ‘23 but that was only because it was the done thing. Before that was my big coat in December ‘22 for a freezing day out at Beamish but I only had a thin long sleeved t shirt under it. I’ve had that coat about 10 years and it’s probably been worn about 6 times.

I go through phases where I’ll wear my cardigan in the house in the winter too but sometimes I don’t like the feel of it.

I should add, I turn thermostat down in the summer. I open the windows and patio doors a lot as I like the fresh air.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 20:39

That is just silly. A hoodie isn't uncomfortable.

It’s silly to you. Not others.

Pelifor · 07/06/2025 21:34

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 07:06

I don't put my heating on. It comes on when the thermostat dips below 20 degrees regardless of the time of year. I wear jumpers when it is cold and have been wearing them for the last week.

However, I will not be a martyr to the cold and don't use a calendar to decide when the heating goes on. Thermostats are great inventions.

Edited

This.
If I want to be cosy my heating will go on whether it's January or July.
Of course not everyone can afford it and it will save money if you wrap up. But there is nothing "sinful" about using heating.

Mum2jenny · 07/06/2025 21:37

If you are paying the bill, and you want to turn the heating on, it’s your call.
If someone else is paying, put a hoodie on!

Mooflon12 · 07/06/2025 21:44

I put my heating on when I want because I don't like being cold and I can afford to.
A jumper doesn't stop the house feeling damp if it's raining and if I'm in a position to prevent mould then why wouldn't I. I also like being in a vest and shorts when I'm relaxing. There's nothing worse than being in someone's cold damp house.

stoow · 07/06/2025 21:45

Just been wearing joggers and a long sleeve T-shirt today. Normally my north facing lounge gets cool.

OP posts:
Butteredtoast55 · 07/06/2025 21:47

Ours has been on today as it's teemed with rain and the whole house feels a bit damp cold.

stoow · 07/06/2025 21:48

You are supposed to keep a window open on the vents. When my neighbour below me moved in. He had to get rid of the damp and mould from walls and a couple of kitchen units. As previous neighbour didn’t have any vents open. This is a flat where she lived for 13 years.

I temporarily close the vents if we have a storm of heavy winds as the whistling is awful

Putting on another layer doesn’t do anything to warm the air. It doesn’t warm your face. It doesn’t stop the room feeling chilly and inhospitable. I agree it makes sense to put on another layer as well, but personally I find cold rooms depressing even if I’m not feeling cold myself.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 07/06/2025 21:54

I did this last winter, just cranked up the heating instead of putting extra clothes on. Ended up with £143 debit on my gas bill by mid February. Never had more than £30 debit before.

I won't be doing that again THIS winter. I'll be bloody well wrapping up!

I have had the heating on a few evenings recently including tonight. Cold and wet here . I went to bed at 9pm with the dog to warm up !

Summertimealready · 07/06/2025 07:21

So where on earth are these people who are putting their heating on? Is it in the UK?
I'm in Scotland and the weather hasn't been great recently but its nowhere near cold enough to put heating on.
Even in winter my thermostat is set so the heating doesn't come on until the temperature goes below 13°.
Putting warm clothing on is the normal reaction to cooler weather surely?

I'm in Glasgow and the sun doesn't get in my house until afternoon, and then only in the back. So it's been baltic this week, and the heating has been on.

It definitely doesn't warm your hands! I'm not sitting in my own house, especially when I'm wfh, freezing my tits off when I have a central heating system designed to prevent that happening.

BurntBroccoli · 07/06/2025 22:00

I put mine on for an hour as living room was only 18 degrees.
Also I was really cold in bed the other night and I’d typically just put all my extra blankets away for the summer.

I like to keep the house damp free and it’s rained quite a bit lately.

Beautifulweeds · 07/06/2025 22:00

My DH wfh and will put on a jumper but then the heating. Annoys me so much as I'm out at work and come back to the energy metre readings. I pay this bill and wished he worked outside of the home to minimise the costs.

On the other hand my DM is in 80s and will out the fire/heating on and rightly so when she's feeling cold. Xxx

Not all windows have trickle vents. Ours do, but I haven't seen many in friends houses that have them.
