Why are people put heating on before putting on a hoodie/jumper

Seen photos and posts with people saying that they have put on their heating on. Some photos have people wearing short sleeves! Just put on a hoodie, jumper or cardi! That costs nothing. Heating - varies depending on how big the home is, type of heating, efficiency etc.

I have not had my heating on since around Easter. My energy account is about £80 in credit.

In your own house yanbu to say that but I voted YABU because you don’t get to dictate what people should be doing think their own homes. They pay their bills not you so surely it’s not of your business

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 13:00

When DD was an undergrad student one of the girls in her houseshare used to wear little tops and shorts and kept turning the heating up. Everyone else used to turn it down because the bills were split between them all. The same girl used to switch the heating on at night as well.

It didn't go down well.

I am reminded of this, which made me laugh.

I want my house to be warm. I grew up really poor and in a freezing cold house and I'm now in a fortunate position where I can have a warm house.

Our first house had no central heating and the first winter we had there was brutal. It snowed at the beginning of December and temperatures were regularly going down to minus double figures at night. We were on an unmade up road and the water froze because the road surface had gradually washed away over the years and the pipes were too close to the surface. Everyone in our street had to go and get water from a standpipe on the next street.

I never want to go back to living like that. I wear jumpers in cold weather anyway, but if it gets so cold that my hands freeze and my nose drips the thermostat kicks in and the house is warm.

It makes so much difference doesn't it. I used to sleep with my school clothes inside my bed sheets and get dressed completely under the covers when i woke up because it was so damned cold. We didn't have hot water either. We used to sit in the living room with the door shut with blankets and body heat to warm the room and if any of us needed the loo we'd run as fast as we could and it took your breath away for a second just sitting on the toilet seat. I don't want my kids to know what 'living cold' is like. It does a lot for my mental health being able to walk into my house, take off my coat etc and feel warm.

Each to their own, if you want to keep the heating off then please do but for some people paying the money to be warm means more than saving a few quid.

I hear you @Tdcp and @RampantIvy .
I remember the 3 Day Week in the 70s, and all the powercuts. Having no hot water or lights, and being bitterly cold. Not being able to have a bath, and having to wash my school shirt in cold water. Sitting in a dark, cold classroom and there being no Christmas lights. No, I'm never going to live like that again. I'm going to be comfortable in my own home. Whatever it says on the calendar.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 14:12

I remember the three day week and power cuts as well.

There was a cartoon in one of the newspapers where the Christmas carol being sung was no oil, no oil, no oil, no oil (Noel)

FoodAppropriation · 07/06/2025 14:18

what is it to you?

People put the heating on when they are cold, or the house is damp.
Who cares, it's their home.

I find it easier to understand than people who have fixed dates: Heating MUST come up 01 November, and MUST be switched off 01st April. Why? If it's too warm, don't put it on, if you are cold, switch it on, who cares what the date is

Natsku · 07/06/2025 14:23

If the weather is cold enough for heating then I put heating on, whether or not I'm wearing a jumper because its not just about heating me, its about heating the house and preventing pipes from freezing and mould issues and suchlike. But that's autumn/winter/early spring stuff, in the summer I never need to put the heating on as even if its chilly outside it doesn't seem to get cold inside if its been warm recently. Like this summer in my area the temperature has been up and down a lot, from highs of 20 to lows of 5 but my house hasn't gone colder than 21 degrees even at night. Good insulation.

Good one! That was a miserable Christmas, indeed.

MatildaMovesMountains · 07/06/2025 14:34

Do you also get cross when people eat steak or drink wine? I mean, porridge and tap water exist, people! And the CINEMA?? Haven't you got a TV, man?! Don't get me started on holidays; these idiots literally have somewhere to stay RIGHT HERE AT HOME!! GRRRR.

buffyandspikeandfaith · 07/06/2025 14:42

It’s wet here today (Lancashire so not shocking it’s wet!) but 17c inside and comfortable
I’ve put the dehumidifier on though as drying washing

Dontlletmedownbruce · 07/06/2025 14:47

My Mum used to do this, crank up the heating while wearing a T shirt. Her logic was that she wanted to wear Summer clothes in Summer. She wanted her skin exposed but surrounded by warm air. It drove me mad if I'm honest

linelgreen · 07/06/2025 15:03

If its cold then the heating goes on regardless of what time of year - that's what it's for!!

Elsvieta · 07/06/2025 19:07

I've had it on twice in the last month or so I think, when I felt chilly. I like to feel warm all over, including the bits that aren't under clothes. It's cosy and homely; being chilly is depressing, like sitting in complete darkness. I like a lamp and some warmth. I'm paying the bills - and the last one, for gas and electricity, was under £60.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 07/06/2025 19:11

I always dress for the weather. It saves a lot of money. I put on a jumper and a dressing gown before I even consider having the heating on, no matter what time of year it is.

But each to their own if others prefer to use their heating rather than add clothing.

FleurDeFleur · 07/06/2025 20:19

I suspect most people dress for the weather.

AhBiscuits · 07/06/2025 20:26

I'm not bundling up like an Eskimo in my home. I'll wear a jumper but if my hands or face feel cold I'll put the heating on whatever the date may be.

JHound · 07/06/2025 20:29

Not everybody likes sitting in their house in a hoodie.

DepositSaverUpper · 07/06/2025 20:38

I can't abide wearing long sleeves indoors , I'd sooner put heating on or a blanket over me.
See also coats - it would have to be baltic out to wear a coat I hate feeling restricted. A jumper with t shirt 95% of winter. As soon as I get indoors the jumper is off.
All sensory on my part

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 20:39

JHound · 07/06/2025 20:29

Not everybody likes sitting in their house in a hoodie.

That is just silly. A hoodie isn't uncomfortable.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 07/06/2025 20:45

An old fashioned hot water bottle saves a lot of money too!

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 20:47

I love a hot wter bottle.
