Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Yep, right up there with sack em on the spot mentality.

I’ve just been reminded on a Facebook group of a great GB News story 😁

Dirty Dan Wootton was doing a feature on how EastEnders was struggling in the ratings. He had John Altman (Nick Cotton) as an interviewee. Wootton was frothing about how EE is “So woke!” and that’s why nobody watches anymore, PC gone mad, everyone has to have an issue… all the usual gumpf. He then asks Altman to tell the story of how he was sacked for refusing to film a gay storyline. Wootton gets heavily into his theme - this is everything that’s wrong with EE, the writers have completely lost touch and ruined what Julia Smith created; take it back to the glory days of Den and Angie, when it was getting 30 million viewers…

There was just one small problem. No one setting up this feature and interview thought to ask when this happened to John Altman. Because it was in 1986. Yes, a) some 35 years before the interview and b) - perhaps more pertinently - at the exact time the Den and Angie glory days were in full swing. So apparently EE was “woke” decades before woke was a thing. And getting 30 million viewers. Oh - and it was Julia Smith who made that decision.

I think re immigration you need to look to Europe who have far greater problems than us at the moment. We have pockets that are a problem in towns and cities. But if you take a large number of men of any race, put them into hotels, don't let them work things will go wrong. We had a hotel in a nearby isolated village re-purposed for four months. The locals had two sexual assaults and a knifing. It was a disastrous choice of location.

I find the MNers' reaction to the DM hilarious. As soon as you share a different political opinion, you're told to put down the Daily Fail; no originality whatsoever. It's no wonder the political landscape changing, in the last few years, has left them befuddled.

Yes - it's utterly tedious. They're probably the sort of people who believe every word in The Guardian.

I know this is descending to their level, but a doctor I met was telling me about acronyms which medics write on patients' notes to let colleagues know what to expect. One was 'GROLIES' which apparently was short for 'Guardian reader of limited intelligence in ethnic skirt'.

Not defending the misogyny there - just trying to make the point that some people think Guardian readers are ridiculous too!

Yes and I've only just learnt it was only the 'far' right refusing to be vaccinated. This lumping together of anything and everything and blaming it all on one faction of society reflects low level thinking and intolerance. I just turn their labels back round on them.

Yep. If you replace the group that watch GBN with any other group and say you’re out of a tenancy or a job see how that lands.

I’m sure the Guardian readers won’t melt. Medical acronyms on notes can take some explaining; NFN, anyone?

Edited

I think the other problem is a cultural one with large groups of men in one place.

I remember hearing a news report about a small town where huge numbers of male would-be immigrants were being housed. They would stand outside in big groups, watching women and girls as they walked along the street. Absolutely no law was being broken, and there was no suggestion that the women were in actual physical danger. But the women felt uncomfortable to have 30+ sets of male eyes follow them while they went about their business. They wanted the police to intervene - but the police were reluctant because no crime had been committed (a cat my look at a queen!). But I get it completely - in some southern European cultures, just as an example, it may be more normal for big groups of men to gather outside and stare at women, but it isn't the case in the UK, usually.

My point is - there doesn't need to be a crime committed for things to be culturally uncomfortable. I don't know what the answer is.

I don't think anyone should be getting all their news (including opinion pieces) from one single source, no matter what it is. That’s where you get the problems - same with internet echo chambers.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/06/2025 17:04

Going back to the OP’s question- I don’t like GBN and wouldn’t watch it, but your colleague was rude and it’s not appropriate to the workplace to speak to you like that.

Exactly. No matter what you watch or read you are being nudged. You have to sift information.

These are disturbing viewpoints. Imagine someone saying if you DONT watch GB news we are going to be removing all contact, and it means you are un intelligent?! The poster would be ripped to pieces. A VERY un intelligent post IMO.

Oh yes, the poster who was rude about people who watch GB News. Look, I answered you before when you raised it, so quit banging the drum.

Banging the drum?! Grin
Give over. I was pointing out why you were deleted. I can see why you wouldn’t want that to be pointed out mind you.
