Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

What was that news channel years ago that had a woman stripping off while she read the news? And a dwarf doing the weather while bouncing on a trampoline?

I've forgotten the name - Live TV?' - but Nick Ferrari worked for it and introduced - used to be one of his favourite brags - The News Bunny. Yes, it was just what you're imagining. I believe the appalling Kelvin MacKenzie was also heavily involved. A forerunner of GB News but at least it knew it wasn't producing news.

Lefties talking about having had enough of arrogance 😆 😂

I mean, nobody ever thinks of themselves as racist, do they? It’s like thinking of yourself as stupid or unkind. Nobody ever believes it of themselves.

Are you racist, have you thought about it?

No, they don't. Stephen Nolan did an interview with a man saying the most racist things. All the while denying he was racist and being offended at the suggestion.🙈

I once had an irritating colleague who tried to label me unfairly as right-wing. There was always a Daily Mail on the staff room coffee table and she and I would take turns to read it while eating our lunch - and often have a lot of fun doing so. I thought we were both pretty middle-of-the-road centre left, small 'c' conservative, liberal - whatever you want to label it.

She then announced one day that her son (Oxford student I'd never met) had said that he hated me because I was a Daily Mail reader. What???

This colleague couldn't see a problem with a) accusing me of unacceptable views simply because I did exactly the same as she did during my lunch break b) telling her pompous son I was a 'DM reader' (quick - get the garlic and crucifixes) and c) telling me about his judgment on someone he'd never met!

She was a strange woman in many ways.

I know several people, btw, who read the DM and they're perfectly nice, kind, public-spirited, liberal people. I'm not a 'DM reader' unless it's been left in front of me and I've got my sandwiches out, but the knee-jerk hatred is very performative and frankly naive.

I find the MNers' reaction to the DM hilarious. As soon as you share a different political opinion, you're told to put down the Daily Fail; no originality whatsoever. It's no wonder the political landscape changing, in the last few years, has left them befuddled.

ChicRedFatball · 03/06/2025 11:22

I very rarely post but I have followed much of this discussion with interest.

A few points...

  1. I did watch GB News quite a bit from 2021-22 as I felt an alternative to the MSM was needed. Some parts of it such as Free Speech Nation and to an extent Mark Dolan I quite enjoyed. Stephen Dixon is also a good presenter. However, I avoided Rees Mogg and Farage largely. During the pandemic, rahter like Unherd and Spiked, it did offer an alternative perspective, which was needed.

  2. Over time I became very disenchanted as, whilst as some have observed, it did have open debate with left leaning guests as well such as Benjamin Butterworth I did get the sense that they were presented as, and happy to present themselves as patsies and almost cartoonish. I guess everyone has their price. Is this a form of manipulation? Possibly. Also, I found the website appallingly tabloidy and trashy and indeed much of the whole thing at times a bit amateurish.

  3. I havent watched it for over 2 years so cannot comment on how it is now. It may be that it has got worse in that time.

  4. I have been dismayed at the intolerance shown by many poster towards those who differ from them in their political views. I have friends who have voted for Labour, the Conservatives, the Lib Dems and yes, Reform. I like to engage them in conversation and debate. I do not judge them on their views even if I totally disagree with them.

  5. All this being said, I do admit that I find Trump supporters difficult. I have engaged with them on platforms like Unherd and many of them are conspiritorial cultists. Not all of course.

  6. These days I get much of my news from Times Radio which is pretty impartial and has views from all sides. Some good presenters too.

kinda deserved i’m surprised you even managed to write those two lines. GB news is for brainwashing simple minds - often illiterate into hate and intolerance. it’s hardly journalism.

Surprised you don't see the irony of your post. Then again, not really surprised.

This thread, Christ.

You have a government marching you into an unwinnable war, and you're flinging shit at one another over who watches the stupidest television channel.

The marching line is depressing and concerning. I hope not. But atm they are pushing it.

Argue the post, not the poster @Dangermoo

There was absolutely no need for your comment.

People have bodily autonomy don't they? I have ever right to not wear a mask and I have every right not to take a vaccine? I took the vaccine but I just gave myself a mask exemption during the pandemic.

Had we listened to the scientists we'd still be in lockdown and have restrictions on our lives.

She's calling people who watch GB News unintelligent. What's the difference?

justasking111 · 04/06/2025 12:18

Last month the media told people to stay home norovirus was killing babies, elderly, overrunning hospitals in the UK. Mmm I thought.

This week get jabbed to go to Thailand COVID out of control

I messaged a respected journalist friend living in Bangkok the article who said it was bollox. Media meddling. They're at it again he said. There has been no impact at all in Thailand

The difference is (I’m amazed you don’t understand this) that you were attacking her specifically. Which is against Talk Guidelines.

I didn’t see the comment but now there’s losing a home added to the getting rid of a job poster below.

That kind of intolerance has a way of backfiring.

Ah right, so I should have said anyone holding your view is insert xxxxxx word here; that seems to be ok. That is exactly what the poster did, the usual reeling off a list of lazy labels but as long as she doesn't specifically aim t at a poster, it's OK. Looking forward to being proactive with the report button then.

Yes and I've only just learnt it was only the 'far' right refusing to be vaccinated. This lumping together of anything and everything and blaming it all on one faction of society reflects low level thinking and intolerance. I just turn their labels back round on them.
