Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Because anyone that mentions it, everyone piles on & basically calls them all sorts! That’s a good enough reason for me!

Surely you'd be better off watching it and seeing if the masses are correct or not?

Blimey, I must say I didn’t realise it has something of a reputation! I only watch it once in a while if struggling for something else to watch, and I find Nigel entertaining on occasion too when he gets on his high horse!

its only on here that it has a bad reputation because MN imo is v left wing. I’ve heard plenty of people in real life say they watch it.

Watch what you want op!

Not long ago the majority of MNetters were reading the Daily Mail but only because they read it in the hairdressers, their inlaws read it and there was nothing else for them to read, it was delivered by mistake, or they tripped over in the street and accidentally fell head first into it and read it from cover to cover.

If you're going to watch the shit that is GB News, just own it 🤷‍♂️

Katemax82 · 30/05/2025 22:38

Bollox to them, I watch gb news too..doesn't make you hitlers reincarnate

I would have just walked off. I would never admit to that. Workplace suicide

I think it's a compliment tbh, in that they didn't think you'd watch that stuff.

Yes, I’d hate for someone to say they assumed that I did watch GB news

GlutesthatSalute · 30/05/2025 22:39

People don't want to watch the news. They want to watch a series of opinions that mirrors their own and reinforces their own smug perception of themselves.

GB News devotees and BBC-worshippers are just two cheeks of the same arse

I love Patrick Christys and his wife Emily Carver!

Panterusblackish · 30/05/2025 22:40

Ive never seen it on TV but will definitely click on their articles.

But I think it's important to read news from differing view points. To understand how different outlets frame the same news and to see what some outlets cover whilst others don't.

I look at most things from the BBC, Guardian, Daily Mail, Al Jazeera, the Jerusalem post, the times of India etc etc etc. If I'm feeling particularly robust I will steal a glance at Fox or the Daily Express.

My politics are dead centre. Boringly so.

So no, I wouldn't judge you for watching a bit of GB news.

MissHollysDolly · 30/05/2025 22:41

Ooof, I’d never admit to this at work.

Embarrassing that’s all you can come up with. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel! Just let people watch what they want and try not to be bitter.

BIWI · 30/05/2025 22:42

I would judge anyone for watching GB News who doesn’t realise what they’re actually watching/listening to though. Who doesn’t have the critical faculties to realise just what’s going on and what’s being promulgated.

Bitter?! Is that the best that you can do? Grin

Yeh, that's how it's meant to work, OP. Please don't be taken in.

BIWI · 30/05/2025 22:44

Thanks for all the laugh reactions @StarDolphins

One would almost think that you actually agree with me.

totk · 30/05/2025 22:44

Some of these replies make me laugh. What I find strange these days is how there seems to be an unspoken list of “approved” things/ people it’s socially acceptable to watch or read. And if you step outside that, nincompoops start treating you like you’ve revealed some deep personal flaw.

Watching GB News doesn’t mean you’ve signed a lifelong contract agreeing with everything ever said on it. Sometimes you watch things because you’re curious, want to hear a different view or whatever. That used to be considered a healthy, open-minded approach.

ExtraOnions · 30/05/2025 22:46

The entire viewership of GBeebies seems to be on here … personally I prefer my right-wing racism from a variety of sources, maybe the Daily Mail, Fox News or Mein Kampf … I then know I’m getting the kind of broad opinion, on which I can base my views.

They can't feel very solid in their own points of view if they fear even five minutes of exposure to a differing one.

well there you go then - you enjoy watching overt racists for a laugh in your more bored moments.

People are likely to judge you then 🤷‍♀️
