To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

@IfNot I don’t think that’s always the case - depends on the bloke - my H likes biker boots and sparkly flat sandals ( on women - not on him) !!

being sexy is akin to being a supporter of Andrew Tate?

If you don’t see sexy as a problematic term you’re being wilful or stupid
Yup.Sexy is a term Tate et al use to hypersexualise and objectify women

Portakalkedi · 28/05/2025 20:02

Yes, they're awful and I'm amazed ( and sad) that they still exist to be honest.

Anothersayinparadise · 28/05/2025 20:03

I love high heals, sadly they don't love me and even I know I look like a pigeon when I try to walk in them so tiny kitten heal for dressing up days only otherwise flats all the way.

Some people like to wear heels, some don't. Some people feel they look nice, some people don't. Surprise surprise, people are different. Why do we have to constantly put down what other people like to wear calling it tacky, or dated or other nasty labels and basically casting aspersions on someone who would be so old / dated / chavvy to even consider wearing the item? Why can't we just celebrate that in this day and age women can wear whatever the bloody hell they want and if they feel sexy in high heels then good for them and if they want to wear crocs to their wedding, then fabulous. It makes me tired and sad to read such vitiolic nastiness over some shoes!

What a dull place this would be if we all prescribed to such utter sanctimonious drivel.

High heeled stilettos look daft in 2025.

applegingermint · 28/05/2025 20:04

I think it might also be a generational thing. 10 years ago I had on heels for a wedding then switched to (nice) ballet flats whilst we played garden games and had a drink whilst bride and groom were off getting their photos. My heels were sinking in the grass and I didn’t want to ruin them.

The bride’s mum (who I’d not met before as she was Australian) actually made a sarky remark to me about “dressing down”. It wasn’t as though I’d put on a pair of manky Birkenstocks, and the wedding was in a barn!

Our grads all wear trainers in financial services. Some days I play spot the not-trainers to amuse myself in meetings.

My husband really doesn’t like heels on me, so not every husband does!

I just think that any heel higher than 2 inches looks ageing and unflattering. Kitten heels of the elegant variety are nice but anything higher is just odd-looking and dated these days.

I've only been posting on S&B for around 4 years. I've never worn very high heels and my preferences have always been kitten heels no higher than around 2 and 1\2 inches or ballet flats.

I remember the scorn and derision that was poured on me for suggesting kitten heels.

Well they can wear what they want, but you’ll still look a prat trotting around a theme park in high heels.

Its very odd for anyone to think they are suitable footwear for that sort of thing.

I used to wear heels everyday to the office in the 1990's and early 2000's. I would feel pretty dated and old fashioned in them now.

I have a pair of laced boots with Louis heels that I still kind of love, but cannot imagine coveting a heel otherwise!

omggg women can exist outside of men, it is okay!

I don't want to be sexy because Andrew Tate will care, I want it so that I feel good (and for the kids on tikTok to call me 'so mother')

and yes, so that women and men will think I'm hot

just because Andrew Tate's lot are weird, doesn't invalidate all of those other reasons

I was watching The Aprentice few weeks ago, and the lady who questions the contestants at the end (can't remember her name),she was dressed in pink and had a lovely pair of pink stilletto sandles, and I thought we'll done if you can wear them because she is 82, but she was sitting down all the time.

Was the woman in stiletto sandals called Linda?

DisapprovingSpaniel · 28/05/2025 20:10

Women have enough judgement without people judging whether or not the little bit of plastic under the heel of their foot is sufficiently long or flat.

I only wear them myself rarely - because they stick in the mud on a dog walk - but cannot find it in me to care much if others do/do not.

Choppychopchops · 28/05/2025 20:10

Love heels, I always think people look ridiculous in trainers and flats with more formal dresses or suits

You will not find me in frumpy Birkenstocks or crocs. God help anyone who calls that fashion.

I will die on this heel…

IwasDueANameChange · 28/05/2025 20:13

yabu, high heels make a woman look sexy! it elongates the leg and makes your walk sexier

Gosh.what an old fashioned view. I associate them as something older women wear, from a time when women looking vulnerable teetering along in high heels was "sexy". Now i think people view a strong, healthy, athletic look as sexy - heels fuck up your feet and ankles. Nothing sexy about yucky feet or ankles that are no longer fit for exercise.

k1233 · 28/05/2025 20:13

I had the most glorious collection of heels 💗 Unfortunately a teenage accident to my knee means it's now stuffed and I have to wear flats or modest heels.

For a very long time (most of my life to be honest) the majority of flats were the fugliest things to ever be created. Revolting. With the recent move away from heels there are finally some decent looking flats without huge, ugly straps and hideous fake crystals or flowers or other revolting decoration.

I was never able to understand why heels were so stunning and flats akin to shoes kids wear in kindergarten. Flats should be able to have the same, thin, attractive straps, the same foot flattering shape as heels, but they never did. As I said, that seems to be changing, which is great as I gave all of my beautiful heels away.

Setyoufree · 28/05/2025 20:16

All depends. I wouldn't wear heels to the zoo or the park, and I don't wear them on my commute. But I love my heels in the office and my work outfits would look absolutely ridiculous with trainers.

StinkerTroll · 28/05/2025 20:16

I was working with the pastoral lead in a high school and I remember standing at the top of a long corridor and watching her sprint down the corridor in these massive high heels, it was really impressive and she made it look easy (when we were chatting afterwards she said all she ever wore was heels and was uncomfortable in flats), DEFINETELY not for me!

Your sense of sexy, or hot is intrinsically linked to heels. A male construct imposed on women over generations . Your example of heels = sexy is NOT an example of women existing outside men, Heels as sexy is v much a male construct and creation
No idea what the other sentence about TiKTok means

IwasDueANameChange · 28/05/2025 20:18

In fact for me wearing a suit and flats just looks wrong

Blimey where do you work that still wears suits 😄

I deal with magic circle lawyers, big four, MBB etc regularly and only really the older men wear old school suits. The women don't seem to at all.

greatyak · 28/05/2025 17:38

I think the opposite. They’ve not gregarious for a long while and the only people I see wearing them are mid - late 20 somethings

?? How can heels be gregarious?

Unpaidviewer · 28/05/2025 20:19

I love the way they look. Grew up watching sex and the city and I loved the fashion. Unfortunately I dont go anywhere to merit wearing heels now.

I also like it when men wear decent shoes.

Itsjustafly · 28/05/2025 20:20

Aw I feel a bit sad that I look ridiculous and dated at work every day. I wear a selection of Clarks 3.5inch block heels, always have. I can walk miles in them no problems, I like them and they go with all my work outfits. I don't actually own a pair of flat work shoes, although I've tried many pairs I never like them.

I didn't realise heels had fallen so far from grace to be honest.

FunMustard · 28/05/2025 20:20

PeapodMcgee · 28/05/2025 17:34

Why assume that people want to look 'sexy'?

They look ridiculous, yanbu.

That poster thinks they look sexy, you think they look ridiculous.

Why is your opinion any more valid than theirs?

MidnightMeltdown · 28/05/2025 20:20

I mean, it’s just fashion. Heels can look good with certain outfits. Some people enjoy variety and playing around with different looks. It’s like art in a sense.

If you don’t like fashion and want to stick your comfies then that’s also fine!

Wearing heels out for dinner doesn’t incapacitate you to the point that you can no longer exercise.
