To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

Also, I agree that they're not going to make a comeback, purely because very few women wear them these days/they're a bit dated. It's not like vinyl, or 1970s style school satchels. These are items that made (many) women miserable when they wore them, and caused pain and discomfort, and often caused deformities in their feet! Why would anyone want a comeback for these, and be expected to wear them again?!

I was restricted in soooo many things I could do when on a seaside holiday weekend with DH (when we were just dating some 35 years ago,) because I wore stiletto heels (all the time) as I felt I had to wear them. I don't know why!!!!I couldn't walk around town for long, I couldn't go on the pier, I wouldn't go to the park or zoo. Right misery I was on that holiday. It's amazing DH stuck with me! 😆I think my/our wedding day was the last time I ever wore stilettos! (Mid 20s.) I wouldn't care if I ever saw a pair again in my life.

As has been said, most milennials (born post 1985) have never worn them. Sensible generation that! 😆

I’m not a fan of high heels because I’ve never been able to walk in them so I know I look ridiculous in them. And kitten heels make my legs look fat so they’re out too.

I think the only person I’ve ever seen look fabulous in high heels is Carrie Bradshaw!

It's linked to a woman feeling her best, and being dressed up and looking good - someone can look sexy in nice Lululemon gym gear or a dress and flat tabi shoes

No, I think they're absolutely gorgeous. The shape, the design, the way they look on. Completely agree that in terms of comfort and utility they're pretty rubbish, but aesthetically they beat big clumpy comfortable footwear all day long. Haven't worn them for years myself but I certainly don't think women who do wear them look ridiculous. But then, I'm not given to ridiculing other women's clothing choices whatever they are.

There may be places where heels still have some currency, but they are definitely dead in the office. I do not see any professional women young or old wear them. Along with suit skirts, heels are dead as fashionable office kit

It's not even clear cut in our home - 25yo twins. One lives in heels, as do her friends and it's 50/50 in her workplace for women to be in heels. Other one has one pair of heels that she wore as a bridesmaid about 10 years ago and then it's flats. Anything other than trainers is classed as smart shoes for her.

My auntbwas an executive PA all her life so they were basically uniform, now in her 70s she cant stand on bare feet without calf muscles giving her pain as they're shortened I suppose, so she even has heels on her house slippers!

It's funny, I'm in my 40s. I used to spend all week in heels and dance all night in clubs.

Of course there's still time, but neither me nor anyone I grew up with is crippled at the ankle and not able to exercise. Fine not to like heels, from an aesthetic perspective or from the angle of what they stand for re the male gaze - but please, let's not be ridiculous.

I love high heels. I think they look elegant. Alas I cannot wear them since Covid as I became accustomed to flip flops and trainers. I have a few comfy pairs that I keep for meetings and work events only and I feel crippled by end of the night. My calves are on fire.

I like what I like and as a short legged long torso person sometimes I feel better proportioned with a heel. I feel these conversations come from a place of quite subtle body/age shaming and conformity, ie if I can wear flat shoes so should you all. We are not all the same and really, why do you care what others are wearing if they are happy with it? I live in the country and generally wear whatever the fuck i want within the bounds of propriety but feel anxious , which I shouldn’t at my advanced age, when venturing into an urban space that I’ll be judged, subtly or less so.

I thoroughly admire people being able to walk ‘normally’ in them. I have never managed, I just over balance in eg stiletto heels, plus high heels have always killed my feet. Having recently lost weight, I’ve discovered I can comfortably wear big block heels, which are comfortable and I need for some of my clothes.

Seeing as everyone has found a new love for Pamela Anderson these days and has been lauded in the media and on here for embracing her natural self and not wearing makeup, here she is earlier this month in heels, does that make her an Andrew Tate supporter? a Benny Hill character? desperate? ridiculous? dated? try hard? and the very worst thing she could look according to this thread, middle aged! I don't think they look ridiculous; but I feel very strongly that they should not be required of anyone for a social situation or especially for a job.

Due to co-ordination disabilities, I am utterly incapable of walking safely in high heels and could not take any job where high heels were expected. I know other people who can't wear them due to foot pain.

But that's not what you were talking about. You were criticising heels in general. I personally wouldn't wear heels to a theme park as I don't think they are comfortable or practical for walking all day. However, saying someone looks like a pratt because they choose to do something you wouldn't is rude and tantamount to being the grown up version of the playground bully picking on the kid who's wearing the sensible Clark's shoes rather than trendy trainers only couched in terms of bad fashion taste. But it's the same thing, mocking someone else's choices for what? To make yourself feel superior to the poor "pratts" making poor choices that you don't approve of?

I used to like them when younger. I really don't see them that much on other people anymore. When I do, I think it makes their feet look really long and big for some unknown reason.

How do you know? I walk perfectly fine and my feet are fine - getting he right brand is key. I do abiut 4-5k steps in them so I would know that for me I’m not kidding anyone.

Well I have. I don't wear heels but the evidence I see is that they very much are still worn. Flats are in the majority but heels are by no means extinct.

Completely agree! I don't know why some posters seem to feel the need to make unpleasant judgemental comments about other people's choices which literally don't affect their lives in any way whatsoever

I don't have a strong opinion either way with heel. I do have a pair for certain dress for cocktail or black tie events but most of the time I live in my Lanx boots or Dr Marten sandals.
What I do think looks bonkers is the huge platform goth boots a lot of the teens I work with wear. Not one of them can walk in them and have to link arms with to walk to the corner shop!! As well as being massive they are usually covered in studs. I keep telling them I am going to have to do a risk assessment on them!!!
