To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

I do worry about people wearing inappropriate unsafe footwear but for driving.

A well dressed lady came into the gym wearing hooker heels (a height I hadn’t ever seen before, narrow as a pencil, and sounded like a horse) she had driven in. Concerned at how she would safely brake/hit the right pedal in the right timeframe.

But similarly young mum visiting the neighbours driving in flip-flops missed the car pedals and hit the house wall hard.

My heels can be pried off my cold, dead feet 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😂

I don’t wear them day to day, but if I’m going out for lunch or out for dinner or to a theatre show, out with friends etc I do.
I’ve got my fancy shoes which are reserved for more formal occasions, but then I’ve got my casual heels which I’ll wear with jeans and a nice top or a sundress.
My DH is also 6ft 5in tall, and I’m something of a hobbit 🫠😂 So heels help bridge the gap a little!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 28/05/2025 19:40

I love the look of them OP but I'm not great at walking in them myself. I certainly don't think they look ridiculous, I support women wearing whatever they want.

PonyPatter44 · 28/05/2025 19:40

I like my heels, but realistically I rarely go anywhere to wear them. I wear lowish heels for work occasionally, but only in the summer.

Worriedsickmostofthetime · 28/05/2025 19:41

When I worked in London I wore heels to work (trainers on commute) and wore heels out in the evenings. I was younger and wanted to be like everyone else I guess. In hindsight I can’t believe I used to put up with the pain and discomfort for the sake of looking a part.

I no longer work in London and not in corporate at all in fact so I no longer wear heels. I think times have changed and corporate wear has changed to a more casual way but I could be wrong, I don’t know what central London offices look like anymore. My feet are in pretty bad shape and I blame the years and miles of heels I wore. Even today, I will wear a pair of heels ,mostly wedges, to a function but have a back up pair of flats to change into. My back and feet are just not up to the challenge anymore especially after years of not wearing them.

Notateacheranymore · 28/05/2025 19:42

I’m going to a military summer ball in July, full length dress and I’m wondering about shoes. Desperately DO NOT want to be wearing heels. The night starts at 19:00h, Friday and there will be breakfast for those still there at 07:00h, Sat am.

So, no heels for me, but my feet are about 1/4 size different so can’t just wear a pair of ballerinas or one foot will be sore within 10 minutes - small foot will be rubbed from the constantly slipping shoe or bigger foot will be sore at the heel and little toe. still looking for the perfect pair of t-bar shoes!!!

Whats yucky about looking sexy?

Sexy? Really it’s a problematic term imposed upon women.Tits out, heels, skimpy or tight clothing. Looking sexy makes me think sleazy men and trying to hard to please women.

KimberleyClark · 28/05/2025 19:46

Haven’t worn heels since retiring six years ago. Don’t miss them one bit.

RisingSunn · 28/05/2025 19:48

I love a good heel with the right outfit.
Don't bite my head off - but I think dresses with flats only look good on people over the height of 5ft8.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 28/05/2025 19:49

I had bunions from age ten so have never worn high heels. Even low heels caused foot pain. I've had the surgery now so I wouldn't risk ruining my nice feet!

Loulo6098 · 28/05/2025 19:49

I don't wear them, but I like them as a fashion choice.

My Gen Z cousin said white trainers with dresses are now 'dated'. I think we should wear what we love and not critique others who are minding their business.

... But I understand to criticise others is what makes fashion what it is.

same! I have a very tall DH and it looks like he’s kidnapping me without my heels 😂

sexy? by what standards and for whom?. It’s anachronistic frankly
sexy, not a term I’d want applied to me. It’s sleazy and Andrew Tate mentality

Frustrated Parks And Recreation GIF

being sexy is akin to being a supporter of Andrew Tate?

Calmdownpeople · 28/05/2025 19:50

LeaveALittleNote · 28/05/2025 18:56

They’re just out of fashion at the moment so we perceive them to be ridiculous. We’ll all be wearing them again in five years time.

Disagree completely. I see all kinds from ballet slippers to heels on all shapes and sizes and ages of women. I see less younger girls wearing ballet flats (which are ridiculously uncomfortable to me) and see more cool trainers with summer dresses or suits.

maddening · 28/05/2025 19:50

In my 20s I wore heels all the time and was comfortable in them too- but as soon as I discovered flats again I got out of practice and the mere idea of an extended period in a pair of heels is horrific now 😅 so I don't assume wearers find them uncomfortable as I certainly wasn't back in the day.

Applesonthelawn · 28/05/2025 19:50

The are in a weird kind of way the Western equivalent of Chinese foot binding. They make a woman vulnerable because her walking is impaired and some weird men find that more sexually attractive than being strong and empowered. And we usually do it to ourselves which is even weirder, like we are pandering to them. I've never really understood it.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/05/2025 19:51

sexiness isn't just one thing, there are many ways to be sexy. And heels aren't only for being sexy. but yes, a woman wearing heels makes them sexy imo! no, I do not support Andrew Tate, I am a normal human being @Zone2NorthLondon

SmoothRoads · 28/05/2025 19:52

What has always bothered me about high heels growing up (when I still fit in women's sized shoes) was that the majority of the shoes you could buy were high heels or low heels. The were virtually no alternatives. I eventually started to wear only sneakers, until some tosser decided to design those with heels too. Thankfully that was just a phase.

I mean, I have an old book on drawing from Andrew Loomis. It's about drawing people and one of the pages contains a reference for a naked man and a naked woman. Except... the woman is not truly naked. She still wears heels.

I also remember this stupid movie with Angelina Jolie where she plays a demon with heels sprouting from her straight feet. It's the most ridiculous things ever. It's completely sick that we automatically associate a woman's silhouette with these ridiculous torture devices.

Ooh, bit reasonable for this debate…..careful now!

TimeForATerf · 28/05/2025 19:54

Middle aged here and I bloody HATE them, have not worn them for decades, except for DS’s wedding in April and they were abandoned in exchange for my Birks around 7pm. I’ve bought some (with block heels) for DDs wedding this year, but I also bought some colour coordinated leather Hermes style flats for after the photos.

I will concede they make some dresses look great, but they are shit to wear.

PorgyandBess · 28/05/2025 19:54

I agree. They look daft and dated.

Screamingabdabz · 28/05/2025 19:54

Just the idea that they may be ‘sexy’ and create an aesthetic for the male gaze is so old hat. Surely we have evolved from aspiring to be Benny Hill girls now? They are just ridiculous. Not that flats are necessarily the answer for everyone - but thank fuck we’ve moved on from walking uncomfortably - and unsafe - on dumb looking 4 inch stilts. I just wish the Princess of Wales would catch up.

CoughCoughLaugh · 28/05/2025 19:54

Some people like to wear heels, some don't. Some people feel they look nice, some people don't. Surprise surprise, people are different. Why do we have to constantly put down what other people like to wear calling it tacky, or dated or other nasty labels and basically casting aspersions on someone who would be so old / dated / chavvy to even consider wearing the item? Why can't we just celebrate that in this day and age women can wear whatever the bloody hell they want and if they feel sexy in high heels then good for them and if they want to wear crocs to their wedding, then fabulous. It makes me tired and sad to read such vitiolic nastiness over some shoes!

Slipperfairy · 28/05/2025 19:55

I didn't wear heels until my 20s (All about the combat boots) but used to have so many pairs of heels. Even the hideously uncomfortable irregular choice ones. I'm tall, so they made me about 6ft. I could wear them all day for work and everything.

Then covid.

I've lost the knack now and my knees don't like them. I've also become used to being comfortable on nights out and not having to hobble home. I hope they never come back in. Men aren't crippling themselves to look tall and sexy are they?
