To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

Extremely old fashioned! No one wears them in my office. COVID seems to have done for them. I gave all mine away to the charity shop years ago.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 28/05/2025 19:06

Yes. Most people can't walk in them properly so look both uncomfortable and unstylish.

As for the office .... totally 1980s and nooo!

WalterMittysPuppet · 28/05/2025 19:06

Awww, I miss my 20s and 30s when I had skyscraper heels! Made me feel elegant and confident as quite a short dumpy person - never had any trouble walking in them although I don't think I ever ran for the bus.

I wear trainers and low shoes these days, as I'm much older and heavier and have a sacroiliac problem and weak ankles. I tried to bust a pair out to wear with a smart dress for a work meeting recently - OMG. The pain in my ankles was unbearable, and they used to be my most comfortable high wedges!

I'm secretly glad they're not fashionable any more. What does the modern middle aged woman wear for work or occasions these days? A block heeled court shoe or summat? What about "mother of the groom" - a nice low sandal?

I'm not ready for velcro Pavers yet.

Because, MN is often very ageist and classist. Heels are out with most of the young (whose trends people who don’t know much about style follow to try to stay relevant). Heels are worn by older women (ew) and by tacky Northerners ( ew ew)
Thats my take anyway!
Actually one of the “ coolest” young women I know has a uniform of pale blue jeans worn with stilletoes. She looks ace and is very East London hipster so it’s not only us old bags who like a heel.
I like flat shoes too but heels provoke a sort of emotional response on here!

I’m 40 so I don’t think I’m classed as the young.

The reason they are hideous is because they are totally impractical and no one can walk properly in them.

Anyone who claims that they are 100% comfortable and can walk comfortably in high heels is kidding themselves.

I’ve gone off them - they seem dated and desperate now. Obviously ok with smart evening dresses, but otherwise a bit naff and aging.

Waterbaby41 · 28/05/2025 19:08

Keep your boring flatties - I like my heels! 😂

Ryeman · 28/05/2025 19:09

They aren't really in fashion these days apart from on glam nights out. I remember people wearing them to work back in the day. There's a mum at school who wears them though, along with really short skirts, as part of her going to work outfits. It looks very dated. She even wore one high heeled shoe while the other foot was in a medical boot!! Mad.

chachahide · 28/05/2025 19:10

I’m short, I wear them loads. It hadn’t occurred to me to care what others think.

Beautifulweeds · 28/05/2025 19:12

I used to love heels, they lifted me up and made me taller and feel more prominent. Unfortunately I can't wear them now but do think they look great 👍

MoominMai · 28/05/2025 18:31

@Takemeback84 if anyone should be wearing high heels 24/7 all weathers it should be me! At barely 5’ nothing haha. In reality though I’ve worn flats my entire life and heels only when ‘out’ and yet - still, still I developed a bunion argh! 😭

But yes, occasionally whilst shopping in town, I will see average height women teetering in high heels or those chunky ankle boots - even when there’s snow on the ground lol and they almost always have an unnatural gait so I wonder why they preserve as surely it can’t be comfortable and not in an environment either where you’re expected to be dressed up but hey each to their own.

I remember in a past job, a senior manager who was about 5’10 would wear 4” heels every day and every time she passed my desk I would just be fascinated and staring at her as she bounced by in a bow legged manner. The only way she could walk was to bend her legs in a really low pronounced way at the knees. She was a elegant looking lady otherwise always perfectly made up but my gosh I just can’t believe how she wasn’t aware of how she was walking and how it looked to others!

Edited

I had a friend who did this! Looked so stylish but when she started walking in her knee high boots had her knees bent all the time. Overall look was completely wiped out by her walking with her legs at a permanent bent angle 😂 Clompy as.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 28/05/2025 19:15

I think they really dress an outfit up. Pointed heels not for me as I have poor balance, I like a block heel. I can walk for miles wearing a block heel or a wedge.

PivotalTonight · 28/05/2025 19:17

AliTheMinx · 28/05/2025 18:34

YABU!!! I think heels looks great when worn with the correct outfit for certain occasions.

Me too.

Love mine, quality leather, latest styles.

No hobbling or sore feet, I wear them all day.

I feel awful in flat shoes, and feel hideous in some of my work suits/dresses with flats.

Cnidarian · 28/05/2025 19:18

They'll be the height of fashion again in 10 years, some new cultural phenomenon like SJP will be back and people will look back at this time period and say gosh weren't we all "frumpy". It's just the cycle of fashion, they'll be back, they're too iconic not to be.

Buildingthefuture · 28/05/2025 19:20

I still love a heel. Not for work or casual but for a night out? Definitely and zero fucks given about what anyone else thinks, they can wear what they like.

Sunnyevenings · 28/05/2025 19:25

BIossomtoes · 28/05/2025 18:57

Doubt it. Most young women now will never have worn them and they’ll look and feel completely alien to them. If you’ve spent your entire adult life in comfortable shoes you can run in, you’re not going to change to little torture chambers. I think they’re as likely to make a comeback as corsets which were abandoned for the same reason.

I think this is probably the reason people have opinions about high heels. They are part of an era when women were judged solely by their looks and their looks were based on what they thought looked good for men. No wonder women in their 20s don’t wear them and women in their 40s/50s look back and cringe. We’ve grown up.

The day I see men tottering around in them is when I will wear them again….

TanquerayTickles · 28/05/2025 19:27

I was at a 21st birthday party at the weekend, in London, and all the cool young women were wearing high strappy heels with their dresses, even if some of them had them in their hands by the end of the night.

They don't wear them to go clubbing or walking about during the day, but definitely still wear them for events/parties. My daughter has several pairs to go with certain dresses, but will wear trainers/converse/cowboy boots, etc, for a night out at Uni.

LowDownBoyStandUpGuy · 28/05/2025 19:30

I’m so glad that they are out of style now for day to day wear as they were so uncomfortable. I still like a short chunky heel on a pair of boots though although it probably advertises my over forty status.

I am now very much a trainer wearer day to day though, even in the office they can look smart depending on the style.

TorroFerney · 28/05/2025 19:34

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:33

I’ve just remembered where I saw someone wearing them recently.

It was Chester Zoo. A woman was hobbling around Chester Zoo in a pair of high heels.

I’m not keen on heels full stop but I can understand wearing them for a night out or special event. But why would anyone do it to themselves for the flaming zoo?

Edited

I see your Chester Zoo and raise you the Great Wall of China. A Russian woman, with an older gentleman.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/05/2025 17:30

yabu, high heels make a woman look sexy! it elongates the leg and makes your walk sexier

as long as you can walk in them of course, otherwise they do look a mess

sexy? by what standards and for whom?. It’s anachronistic frankly
sexy, not a term I’d want applied to me. It’s sleazy and Andrew Tate mentality

Hallywally · 28/05/2025 19:35

I’m in my 40s and never really worn heels. I’m quite clumsy & it’s just not the sort of look I go for- no judgement against those who like them. I’ve worn block/wedge heels in the past but they’ve always been chunky shoes/boots with a wide and comfortable fit and not very high.

Even on a thread about shoes, in with the casual ageism…

They can't help themselves, can they.

I love them. I own probably over 200 pairs of designer shoes at the moment and 90 percent of them are heels. I literally love everything about them. My only regret in life is not wearing them more! That and bikinis, I wish I'd basically worn nothing but a bikini and some strappy choos for my entire 20s.

That was a popular look when I used to go to Ibiza in the early 2000s :D

MidnightGloria · 28/05/2025 19:37

I do think they look ridiculous. I won't wear any shoes with high heels or pointy toes, because I want comfortable, healthy feet. I walk a lot and I couldn't care less what anyone thinks of my height or the shape of my legs.

I'm in my 30s and was probably 15 or 16 the last time I wore heels. The novelty wore off and they just seemed painful and pointless. You don't see men wearing them!

I saw a lady in them at the top of Snowdon but assume she got the train up.
