To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:26

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

Calling people.prats for what they wear? Are you serious?

I just can't get my head around the vitriol.

How do you know? I walk perfectly fine and my feet are fine - getting he right brand is key. I do abiut 4-5k steps in them so I would know that for me I’m not kidding anyone.

There is no way that wearing high heels for any prolonged amount of time can be good for you. Even if you think you are fine, it won’t be doing you any good and will likely cause problems.

Like I said in my op I can understand people wearing them for formal events but wearing them for a day out walking around or to do the weekly shop is ridiculous.

I’ve got lots of pretty comfortable heels. Not super high but 3-4 inches. I bloody love them. And I can run and dance in them let alone walk!
And you may not like women in heels but your husband does 😁

What an idiotic remark.

What a dull place this would be if we all prescribed to such utter sanctimonious drivel.

High heeled stilettos look daft in 2025.

Sorry, 'live and let live' is sanctimonious drivel but laughing at people and calling them parts for their choice of footwear is perfectly ok?

Um, ok then.

You're maintaining your steadfast promotion of heels = sexy or making the best of oneself. You associate heels with being sexy or best that is a stereotypical and somewhat antiquated view

Your TikTok comment on previous post I literally don’t understand it
No particular opinion about TikTok

well tbh not many people are wearing heels to bed or for a lazy day in the garden! They're for dressing up and making the best of yourself - which is what I'm saying. I don't think that's really an antiquated view

you don't understand the vernacular used by the kids on titkok that I quoted? not a problem at all, a while back they were calling a woman 'mother' for strutting her stuff whilst looking her best

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/05/2025 20:42

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/05/2025 17:37

I think that if you're wearing heels, you want to look and feel your best

Feeling sexy can be part of feeling your best, it's not about whether a man likes it

I’ve never worn them. Flats make me look and feel my best.
l hate heels. They look trashy to me.

nonnes forcing you to wear heels or shaming you for wearing them

youre saying they look trashy - I think that they look really good and really pull an outfit together at times

Omelettewars · 28/05/2025 20:45

Most women look better in heels (as long as they can walk ok in them!). It gives better posture, you look slimmer etc. However, they aren't in fashion currently so when I see women in heels it looks outdated. Women are prioritising comfort over looks now and quite rightly.

Cherrysoup · 28/05/2025 20:46

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 28/05/2025 20:38

Well I have. I don't wear heels but the evidence I see is that they very much are still worn. Flats are in the majority but heels are by no means extinct.

Me too. I was reminded, reading this, of a colleague. I’m not sure of her age, about 30? She walks perfectly well in them round work, as does another colleague who is Italian, about 45, incredibly stylish and is regularly in heels.

I love them. I own probably over 200 pairs of designer shoes at the moment and 90 percent of them are heels. I literally love everything about them. My only regret in life is not wearing them more! That and bikinis, I wish I'd basically worn nothing but a bikini and some strappy choos for my entire 20s.

Are you very short? I can't see the appeal at all!

Annalouisa · 28/05/2025 20:47

Yes, high heels can make an outfit look nicer by elongating your legs and making you look taller, but like another poster said, seeing women "clip clopping" down the street really drives home how ridiculous it is that we/women are disabling ourselves in this way. I was walking behind a woman who was trying to walk quickly to catch a train, and it was comical to see her clip clop and hear the thump thump of her plastic heels as she tried to walk quickly without falling over.

Don't get me wrong, I wear heels myself, on occasion, but seeing it out and about just reminded me that it's totally impractical to wear heels if you need to get from A to B quickly.

Why do we need to look sexy or have 'elongated legs' in a zoo or on a train?

Height isn't even an attribute that is that appreciated in women, unlike in men. Why don't they wear high heels?

One day, maybe high heels will be considered the equivalent of foot binding or those tribes that elongate their daughters' necks with metal rings.

NoraLuka · 28/05/2025 20:48

I’ve never really worn them because I’d be over 6 ft and feel self conscious. Plus I hate walking in them and don’t like the look of them.

Fashions change, when was the last time you saw anyone wearing one of those Elizabethan ruff collars? I couldn’t care less if anyone else chooses to wear heels but I hope they never come back as the default smart shoe, it’s so much better not having to wear them for weddings etc.

But how many people do you honestly see wearing sky scrapers to Tesco or at the local garden centre? My guess is hardly any, so why do you feel the need to start a thread about it? Weird.

BIossomtoes · 28/05/2025 20:49

They're for dressing up and making the best of yourself

They may be for dressing up for some people, they have nothing to do with making the best of yourself.

Daisymae55 · 28/05/2025 20:49

I love a high heel, but then I’m 5 ft 1. I love wearing a pretty dress and heels for a nice, rare evening out. However I agree people look silly wearing them when it’s impractical (zoo, park, food shop etc) but if it makes them happy then that’s great

People do look like prat’s if they were totally unsuitable clothing yes.

I didn’t say that all people who wear heels are prat’s, I said you’d look like one wearing them round a theme park for the day.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/05/2025 20:50

some people consider looking their best being wearing heels, others consider it wearing a tracksuit 🤷‍♀️

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 28/05/2025 20:51

DP likes a pair of heels. She'd never be daft enough to walk around a theme park or a zoo in them, but she does like them on a night out.

Quite frankly, I'd prefer she wore something that enabled her to walk at a normal speed. I can't deny that her calves look fantastic in them though.

But.... They like them? This whole 'they will damage their feet' not necessarily at all. It like you are desperate for them to be proved wrong or something.

I just can't fathom thinking like you do.

IfNot · 28/05/2025 20:55

I think people think of “heels”’as being those 6inch stilletoes drag queens ( and some women) wore in the early 00’s. All my heels are chunky and comfortable- I wouldn’t wear anything that caused me pain!
As for idiotic remarks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g it was a jokey comment aimed at deflating the judgmental comments about SHOES and since then there have been at least 27 comments more idiotic than mine! 😂

But what does it matter if some people see them as old fashioned? I’ve never understood why people wear or don’t wear things because they are fashionable or not - surely you wear what you like and what you think suits you? I’d give anything to be able to wear a lovely pair of 3” heels again.

IfNot · 28/05/2025 20:58

I used to like those old black and white movies where all the women stride about in chunky black 😍court shoes, or corespondent shoes giving the men the runaround. Those women were my shoe idols
