To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

Takemeback84 · 28/05/2025 17:26

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

But how many people do you honestly see wearing sky scrapers to Tesco or at the local garden centre? My guess is hardly any, so why do you feel the need to start a thread about it? Weird.

Not many but I have seen it in quite a few occasions.

It’s just one of those things that I notice. Probably because they are always teetering.

I can almost feel the discomfort.

I’m going to a military summer ball in July, full length dress and I’m wondering about shoes. Desperately DO NOT want to be wearing heels. The night starts at 19:00h, Friday and there will be breakfast for those still there at 07:00h, Sat am.

So, no heels for me, but my feet are about 1/4 size different so can’t just wear a pair of ballerinas or one foot will be sore within 10 minutes - small foot will be rubbed from the constantly slipping shoe or bigger foot will be sore at the heel and little toe. still looking for the perfect pair of t-bar shoes!!!

You go for the larger size and put an insole or half insole in the shoe with the smaller foot.

RainbowAndArrow · 28/05/2025 20:55

But.... They like them? This whole 'they will damage their feet' not necessarily at all. It like you are desperate for them to be proved wrong or something.

I just can't fathom thinking like you do.

Well yes but it’s just how I feel.

It’s like you get people laughing at the whole lip filler and Botox thing. Or people don’t like nail extensions, or scrunch bum leggings, or leggings full stop.

People laugh at men in tracksuits.

yabu, high heels make a woman look sexy! it elongates the leg and makes your walk sexier

as long as you can walk in them of course, otherwise they do look a mess

Surely, that's in the eye of the beholder.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/05/2025 20:43

it's insane

I can't remember which username I posted under but it was only 4 years or so that I got the same sort of vitriol for saying I liked ballet flats and kitten heels.

They were deemed dated/ hideous/ terrible for your feet.

MrsSunshine2b · 28/05/2025 21:06

I very rarely wear heels because I prioritise comfort and mobility but I don't feel the need to call other people's style "ridiculous" because it's not mine.

Most people have agreed that wearing heels in some circumstances is ridiculous.

Its completely disingenuous to pretend that you never judge anything that anyone ever wears ever.

There is no way that wearing high heels for any prolonged amount of time can be good for you. Even if you think you are fine, it won’t be doing you any good and will likely cause problems.

Like I said in my op I can understand people wearing them for formal events but wearing them for a day out walking around or to do the weekly shop is ridiculous.

Well I wouldn’t wear them for a daily shop as I think sweats and heels aren’t really my style. I wear them when I go into the office (because Amy feet under my desk at home is normally shoeless). I know you don’t believe it but I am perfectly comfortable and happy to walk around all day in them.

And they are in the wrong too... Feel how you like, everyone is entitled to their opinions. Go ahead and wear what you want obviously. But starting a thread mocking people, is mean and cannot be excused by "But, but, other people do it too...!".

EconomyClassRockstar · 28/05/2025 21:10

I think someone forgot to tell the women in NYC that heels were aging and out of date because I see them everywhere on all ages and they invariably look great. But each to their own. I mean, I would't wear them to traipse around Trader Joe's but the right occasion, absolutely!

5128gap · 28/05/2025 21:11

CoughCoughLaugh · 28/05/2025 20:33

But that's not what you were talking about. You were criticising heels in general. I personally wouldn't wear heels to a theme park as I don't think they are comfortable or practical for walking all day. However, saying someone looks like a pratt because they choose to do something you wouldn't is rude and tantamount to being the grown up version of the playground bully picking on the kid who's wearing the sensible Clark's shoes rather than trendy trainers only couched in terms of bad fashion taste. But it's the same thing, mocking someone else's choices for what? To make yourself feel superior to the poor "pratts" making poor choices that you don't approve of?

Some people are very invested in believing that heels look stupid, are dated, aren't worn by young people, because they want both the comfort of their flats and to feel they're 'getting it right' style wise. It doesn't matter how many people say that in their town/city/night out they've seen stylish young women in heels, they will staunchly deny their existence because they will be looking only for affirmation that their comfy shoes are still on trend, and so will have noticed only what they wish to see.

BurntBroccoli · 28/05/2025 21:12

I did a double take in the Post Office the other month as the woman in front was wearing a bright red pair of really high stilettos! Rest of her clothing was pretty ordinary so not off to a wedding or anything.
It’s an unusual sight these days!

That’s social conditioning

Exactly this. This is such a bizarre thread.

Wear what you like on your feet, maybe don't give it so much thought.

Of course I do. But I don't start a thread about it and go on and on and on defending a position which comes down to simple bitchiness because it's their choice and they can wear what they like

'dont deserve to be called shoes' is proper mad talk. There's a difference between 'i don't like x' and 'it you do x you must be a y and z'.

HailtotheBop · 28/05/2025 21:17

My heels wearing days are far behind me thanks to bulging discs in my lower back and arthritis in my knees. I love pretty shoes, but these days they have to be flat and preferably have a thick enough sole to cushion any impact.

Well everything is social conditioning then, we are conditioned to believe all sorts

Men usually don't have hips that sway so that's why typically they don't look good in heels

That said, some men, such as those who wear drag, look amazing in heels

I think that flats can look amazing 🙌

Kitten heels of the elegant variety are nice but anything higher is just odd-looking and dated these days.

I've only been posting on S&B for around 4 years. I've never worn very high heels and my preferences have always been kitten heels no higher than around 2 and 1\2 inches or ballet flats.

I remember the scorn and derision that was poured on me for suggesting kitten heels.

Ah yes I suppose it’s fashion though - kitten heels are having a moment again aren’t they! I couldn’t see the sense in them fifteen / twenty years ago; you either wore a heel or you didn’t. However now that I favour a flatter foot I can see the elegance in them now; it’s all relative I guess! That said you were certainly ahead of the curve to be suggesting them four years ago 😊

Some people like to wear heels, some don't. Some people feel they look nice, some people don't. Surprise surprise, people are different. Why do we have to constantly put down what other people like to wear calling it tacky, or dated or other nasty labels and basically casting aspersions on someone who would be so old / dated / chavvy to even consider wearing the item? Why can't we just celebrate that in this day and age women can wear whatever the bloody hell they want and if they feel sexy in high heels then good for them and if they want to wear crocs to their wedding, then fabulous. It makes me tired and sad to read such vitiolic nastiness over some shoes!

I agree.

A lot of women have so much internalised misogyny.

A group of men would be laughing at and enjoying the thought of a bunch of women arguing and tearing each other down about fucking footwear, and what they see as “sexy” “dated” “chavvy” etc.

It happened on several threads. It's only quite recently that the "ballet flats are sooo dated" brigade or the shrieks of horror at kitten heels have piped down

This is the first time Ive ever come across this, the investment is crazy!!!

It comes up on MN on a fairly regular basis. Usually triggered by someone having seen a woman in heels and wanting reassurance that they're not coming back. I get it. I'd love to think that the shoes my 56 year old feet are happy in are the very things that women with younger more resilient feet are wearing because they're the height of fashion. But I only need to glance at the high strappy sandals, ankle boots and cowboy boots around me when I venture out out to know its not always the case.
