Criticised over my eating style

Not sure how to explain this properly without it sounding petty/silly.

My partner does all of the cooking (we don’t live together), we tend to only eat once a day, usually late evening so by then I’m starving.

Last Night he made lasagne and a huge Greek salad which was in a big bowl. I proceeded to put some salad next to my lasagna, and he got really cross, said why I am mixing hot and cold food together stating “that’s disgusting”

He is a different culture to me and does eat a little differently…but the point of the post is , I will eat how I want! I stood up for myself and he said I was over reacting, but it put me off my meal then, and I did feel a bit ‘told off’

AiBU to be cross about this ?

Bit childish both ways.

Me and DH are from different cultures I cook his fiod and I cook my food and food in between feom different cultures that we 100% eat wrong.
In his cukture you eat rice and curry with your hands never ever has he told me off. He respects I use a spoon and that's it. Never been bought up.

I assume then that his lashing out maybe due to something else.

You're Most Surely Not Being One Iota Childish In Any Way, Shape Or Form 💚
This Man Grumpily Hotheadedly & Unnecessarily Criticised You
It's Really Unpleasant To Be On The Receiving End Of Unnecessary Criticism Especially Coming From Someone Whom Should Be Showing You Love & Kindness

So he puts his saliva covered fork into the shared salad bowl?

Never allow some man to tell you off.

Presumably they share saliva on various occasions already.

Italian? I've got one of those. He eats his way and I eat in mine. No need to comment. He just likes to taste each dish individually, not "Like an American", as he so diplomatically puts it!

I'm American. We eat our salads separately, usually before the main course.

Endorewitch · 03/06/2025 19:20

Is he by any chance Italian?Italians would eat their salad after the lasagna.
But that doesn't excuse his behaviour. You can combine any foods that you choose to.

Well I’m from a country close by to Italy and I eat hot and cold food together all the time. I have even been known to-shock horror-have a side salad with spaghetti hoops! But I’m an uncivilised monster I guess.

That is your choice. I was just pointing out that the custom in Italy is to eat salad separately from lasagnas.you living in a country near Italy and choosing an unusual combination of foods is irrelevant to this discussion. It is not about you!
I also said people can make their own choices and there is no necessity to be rude.

I’m sorry who has been rude ? If it’s me I apologise but I’m not sure when I was

I don't think anything you said was rude OP - not sure who @Endorewitch is talking to, but if it's the post from Philomena above yours, that wasn't rude either Confused

I think he's referring to meals like stacked burgers and the stuff you see on Man vs Food. He's never been to America though, I have and found some amazing food, which would still probably not be to his taste. Italians (in his family, at least) are puritanical about their ingredients and preparing things in a "correct" way. Meals follow an expected structure, even in restaurants.

Understood.

Communal bowl or individual bowl because one is unreasonable and the other isn't.

Weird and slightly gross - would he be digging his fork into the communal salad bowl?

HevenlyMeS · 13/06/2025 20:13

Completely Concur With You
I don't see rude comments in concerns with these folks either
God Bless You&Yours
