To think this is not acceptable for a “breakfast bundle” at Airbnb?

Me and DP went away for a night away and picked to stay at an Airbnb on Saturday night. We checked in about 3 and had to leave at 9 on Sunday. It was expensive (around £150 for the night) but it was a nice place. The owner messaged me before we got there and asked if we would like to add on a breakfast box each. Sounded like a nice way to refuel for another day of walking so I said yes. A request was sent for £20, which seemed okay for a breakfast for 2.

When I got there, there was 2 buns from Aldi, a tin of beans from Aldi, 2 bacon rashers in the packet, 2 sausages and 2 hash browns, and 10 cherry tomatoes. It was in a plastic tub in the fridge.

I am not a complainer at all. I really don’t want to complain, but I really don’t think this is justified. Aibu?

the owner said “it’s an amazing deal, you’ll have plenty to take home with you”

???? The portions were tiny!

No eggs?

fussychica · 26/05/2025 16:14

Never had a 9am check out in any Airbnb I've stayed in, and that's quite a few.
The breakfast is a complete rip off, and as per your post you could have got this in a cafe for a similar price without the trouble of cooking it yourself. Would definitely go in my review.

faerietales · 26/05/2025 14:53

Well, they would have to come to the rental anyway to clean and prepare, so it's hardly an arduous trek!

Not many AirBnB owners do this - the majority outsource this and have cleaners to do it. It would be outside of a cleaners remit to do the shop, and so it could’ve been done by an odd jobs person or the landlord who wanted paying for their time.

Ihateslugs · 26/05/2025 16:29

So you got a bread roll, one sausage, one rasher of bacon, one hash brown, half a tin of beans and a few tomatoes for £10! No way would I be happy with that, on a self serve buffet breakfast I usually take two or three rashers of bacon, two sausages, fried egg, mushrooms, beans, two hash browns and toast - you can keep the grim cooked tomatoes! I might have some fruit and a pastry as well if I plan not to have lunch. In my local garden centre cafe they serve an all day breakfast for £8 which is enormous!

I think I would leave a negative review, to make around £8 profit on each breakfast which you had to cook is a bit greedy on top of £150 for the night and an early departure.

They’ve just charged her £150 to stay for one night in their property! Of course they’re gouging her! Talking about how much breakfast you could get with £20 yourself is like saying how much of your own house you could get for £150 by staying at home. People don’t rent out Airbnbs out of the goodness of their heart!

...I know that, why are you yelling? Are you actually defending the pitiful offering they charged OP £20 for because that's just how it works and people should expect to be gouged? Suggesting that OP is silly for not anticipating being gouged based on the £150 a night price tag (which isn't actually unreasonable depending on location)?

There's a world of difference between bumping up the prices a little bit to cover costs and taking the piss, which was my meaning behind pointing out I could do a proper full English with £20 and still have change. They're taking the absolute piss.

Motheroffive999 · 26/05/2025 16:30

That's rubbish.
I would expect fresh bread, muesli, fruit , croissants / Jam and nice coffee.

Bumblebeestiltskin · 26/05/2025 14:00

I would have asked what was included before saying yes and paying, personally.

Exactly this, but YANBU as this breakfast is seriously lacking eggs 😏

What pray be a square sausage @Bex271 ?

It’s a Scottish sausage and tastes amazing

Stopandlook · 26/05/2025 16:35

I wonder if they forgot, and that was left over from the previous occupant? I’d check. Seems a bit odd they said there would be loads left over.

WiddlinDiddlin · 26/05/2025 16:39

Mm, it does seem very odd that they specifically said there'd be enough to take home leftovers... and there was barely enough to feed one person sufficiently!

I'd check that this wasn't the left overs from the last person OR they made a mistake and thought you were wanting just one breakfast.

sprigatito · 26/05/2025 16:39

I imagine they justify the paltry offering of meat and the absence of eggs by sticking two rolls in, so the idea is that you make a “breakfast bap” each. It’s mean and greedy of them, but in my experience that’s far from unusual in AirBnB hosts. Take date-stamped photos of anything that’s dirty or damaged in the place so they can’t screw you when you leave.

SoeurFayre · 26/05/2025 16:39

I’m a host for the past twelve years. It’s b & b - bed and breakfast therefore I leave tea coffee, bread, eggs, juice, milk butter and jam. Breakfast fixin’s!!

the best Airbnb i stayed in had similar. Checkout in mine is not til 11. Check in is at two, because I don’t do back to backs to make sure the place is spotless and I don’t charge the very cheeky extra cleaning fee!!!

not all Airbnb’s are created equal, some are just too greedy. Judge, I mean, review accordingly!

ridl14 · 26/05/2025 15:54

2 sausages, 2 bacon rashers and 2 hash browns for two people...?

Also sounds like random leftovers

I would wonder if they’ve maybe left it to a cleaner. The early check out would suggest to me they aren’t doing it themselves. There can be quite a gap between what was agreed and what is delivered. Hopefully OP checks and updates.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 26/05/2025 16:44

the owner said “it’s an amazing deal, you’ll have plenty to take home with you”

This keeps making me laugh today.

bruffin · 26/05/2025 16:49

From ocado

10 rashers bacon
6 heck sausages
tin M&S baked beans
Mccains Hashbrowns
6 ocado soft brown rolls
6 salad tomatoes
for

£9.40

So yes you have been ripped off.

Delphiniumandlupins · 26/05/2025 16:52

I think it is hardly adequate. Of course you're not going to get £20 of food but that wouldn't even come to £5! Leaving 2 rashers of bacon in a packet is particularly rank. Double the bacon, handful of mushrooms and a couple of eggs would still be ungenerous but probably beyond complaint..

After their comment about "leftovers" you should message them and ask if anything was missing

Is £150 a night expensive? Surely that’s Premier Inn prices? I’m not sure what you can really expect if you stay at an Air BnB, if you want quality you have to go for a proper hotel or cottage company.

Not at all. I assume you've never stayed at Airbnb or even Premier Inn for thar matter. I've never paid more than about £70 for a double room at PA & £10 for all you can eat breakfast. Airbnb can range from a backpacker's hostel for £30 a night to a boutique lodge for hundreds per night

notprincehamlet · 26/05/2025 15:56

You'll need something more substantial than that just to complete all your Airbnb checkout chores

This is very true

Owner definitely subscribing to the MN "Feed a family for a week with one chicken" school of thought.

deismevav · 26/05/2025 16:56

Massive rip-off. For £20 I would expect something nicer/more artisanal than Aldi. I would give her a crap review and move on.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 26/05/2025 16:59

I think thats a massive swizz...Id be pissed off with that breakfast.

Butteredtoast55 · 26/05/2025 17:00

This is Airbnb for you. We've just been away for a few nights and paid £132 per night for two people. This covered a really lovely room with a great view, and very varied, freshly cooked breakfast. It was way better value than mediocre Airbnb offers nearby.
So no, YANBU.

True I’ve never stayed at an Air BnB, I wouldn’t touch it, too much risk in terms of quality and very little come back as far as I can tell. I have stayed in many Premier Inns if I just need to stay somewhere for one night, I think it’s usually around £120-£150 per night plus breakfast.

Crazyworldmum · 26/05/2025 17:12

Some people have no shame ! I co host a airbnb and we always leave bread butter , milk , cheese fruit and a bottle of wine at nil extra fee .
we often stay on airbnbs too and people leave us cakes , milk , wine even chocolate for the kids at no extra . What’s wrong with people

UniqueRedSquid · 26/05/2025 17:12

My MIL runs an AirBNB. She leaves cereal, butter, bacon, sausages, eggs, breakfast pastries, milk and doesn’t advertise or charge extra for it. It is included in the price of the stay which is about median for the location and type of property she lets.

I think you’ve been had off quite badly.
