To think this is not acceptable for a “breakfast bundle” at Airbnb?

Me and DP went away for a night away and picked to stay at an Airbnb on Saturday night. We checked in about 3 and had to leave at 9 on Sunday. It was expensive (around £150 for the night) but it was a nice place. The owner messaged me before we got there and asked if we would like to add on a breakfast box each. Sounded like a nice way to refuel for another day of walking so I said yes. A request was sent for £20, which seemed okay for a breakfast for 2.

When I got there, there was 2 buns from Aldi, a tin of beans from Aldi, 2 bacon rashers in the packet, 2 sausages and 2 hash browns, and 10 cherry tomatoes. It was in a plastic tub in the fridge.

I am not a complainer at all. I really don’t want to complain, but I really don’t think this is justified. Aibu?

the owner said “it’s an amazing deal, you’ll have plenty to take home with you”

???? The portions were tiny!

I’ve been screwed over by breakfast box offerings before. £7 each for a variety size box of cornflakes, a pint of semi skimmed and a tiny orange juice.

Was there nothing to drink atall? No eggs / bread and butter for toast? I’d contact and say that you were a bit surprised by the breakfast box and just wanted to check nothing had been forgotten.

Yes, I’d agree. I mean, it wouldn’t work for me, as I’m vegetarian, but it sounds like a just about adequate provision for an ‘English breakfast’.

What were you expecting? Did you ask in advance?

What universe do you come from where one sausage, one rasher of bacon, one hash brown, half a tin of beans and a bread roll is an adequate English breakfast? Maybe if you're ordering from the kids menu, but not for a tenner a head!

From Aldi I could do a proper full English for two with £20 and probably have enough leftover for a bottle of fizz and some juice for bucks fizz. They've gouged OP massively whatever way you slice it the cheapos.

What were you expecting, though? I’d have gone out for breakfast, or you had the option to bring it from home, so I suppose you’re paying for convenience. But I would definitely have asked exactly what my £20 got me.

For £20, I would expect more than one sausage, hash brown and slice of bacon per person, that's for sure. No mushrooms, no sauces, no black pudding, no butter (or proper bread for toast) - sounds awful.

IwasDueANameChange · 26/05/2025 14:23

Id expect a breakfast box to be some combination of:

  • lovely fresh bread - not supermarket stuff, a nice sourdough
  • local butter/jams/honey
  • local farm eggs
  • butcher bacon or sausages
  • fresh fruit
  • posh muesli type cereal

I would not expect anything from a budget supermarket.

Tontostitis · 26/05/2025 14:23

I stay in a lovely place every six weeks or so gorgeous boutique vibe for around £120 ,a night and the breakfast box is a bottle of fresh OJ, a wholemeal multi seed fruity muffin, posh granola, organic yogurt and a banana. There's also a Nespresso machine or a range of teas and milk and oat milk provided plus fresh brownies. I would absolutely hate the breakfast you were given it's very poor form

WiddlinDiddlin · 26/05/2025 14:24

I am baffled by the people who think that:

1 bacon
1 sausage
1 roll
Some beans
1 hash brown
Some tomatoes

Constitutes an acceptable cooked breakfast!! Maybe if it was for a toddler.

Morrisons Ultimate Breakfast - £8.50 and its obviously cooked for you:

3 sausages
2 bacon
2 eggs
2 black pudding
mushrooms
2 hash browns
beans
slice of fried bread

Their standard full breakfast (£7 or two for £12) is:

2 sausage
2 bacon
1 egg
2 hash browns
mushrooms
beans
toast and butter

They do do a similar small breakfast but you do get an egg and toast as well, and its only £5.50.

This is a massive rip off @Scottsleeping and i would definitely raise it in the review.

They’ve just charged her £150 to stay for one night in their property! Of course they’re gouging her! Talking about how much breakfast you could get with £20 yourself is like saying how much of your own house you could get for £150 by staying at home. People don’t rent out Airbnbs out of the goodness of their heart!

Stepfordian · 26/05/2025 14:27

Is £150 a night expensive? Surely that’s Premier Inn prices? I’m not sure what you can really expect if you stay at an Air BnB, if you want quality you have to go for a proper hotel or cottage company.

MissyB1 · 26/05/2025 14:27

You were totally ripped off for the breakfast box. On your review advise people that the breakfast isn't good value.

PullTheBricksDown · 26/05/2025 14:27

Did you take a photo? If so I'd post that in the review and say this is what you paid £20 for and you'll let others decide whether it's good value or not. Or just ask for a refund of the £20 then do the above if they decline.

Sounds like they grabbed half used stuff from their own fridge and that's what you got. This sort of thing is why I don't do Air BnB.

YourQuirkyLimeSnail · 26/05/2025 14:29

You should have checked what a breakfast bundle was!

£150 a night is fairly standard for a bank holiday weekend, to be fair.

Our local cafe does the following for £9 - bacon, sausage, hash brown, black pudding, beans, mushrooms, eggs, fried tomato, toast and tea/coffee, or you can double up and get unlimited toast and hot drinks for £14.

Considering OP had to cook her breakfast and wash up afterwards, I'd say her hosts were taking the absolute piss.

VickiFromAmsterdam · 26/05/2025 14:31

Considering you thought the Airbnb was expensive, & you had to check out at 9, I’m surprised you didn’t check what you got for a £20 breakfast box. I’d’ve expected a breakfast box to take away like you get on holiday with cake, cheese, boiled egg, croissants, fruit, yoghurt, juice …. I’d do a review explaining the uncooked breakfast. No way would I want to cook.

Paellama · 26/05/2025 14:32

I really dont get why so many responses are incredulously asking what was expected for £20. Clearly a lot more than opened packets and leftovers. As a minimum, fresh bread, butter, milk, juice, cereal, fruit, and maybe things like eggs and bacon that need cooking, or otherwise pastries. Like a hotel buffet.

TheodoraCrumpet · 26/05/2025 14:33

For £150 I don't expect to be kicked out at 9 in the morning. And depending on location and events, yes, that would be expensive for a Travelodge type place. I've probably paid that in large cities to attend sold out shows, but the last stay I had was about £30 a night.

Lolabear38 · 26/05/2025 14:33

@Scottsleeping if you’d have asked what it included before agreeing to it and paying then you wouldn’t have had a problem? You’d also have been aware that you needed to cook it yourself. You have nobody else to blame for this, of course the air bnb owners were trying to make money - it isn’t a not for profit site!

You also seem pretty fixated about the fact it came from Aldi. Would this have been ok if it was from M&S or Waitrose? Sausages/ bacon from all these places are still made from the same kind of pigs 😂 and Aldi food consistently rates really well when compared with other, more expensive shops.

I wouldn’t have been full from this breakfast but I also would have done some due diligence and checked what was included in the first place. It was optional and you opted in.

This got me as well. An extra tenner each for a bit of food seems fine. If having a big/nice meal was important, OP should have asked what was in it.

AndImBrit · 26/05/2025 14:34

On the basis the landlord doesn’t live there, if it’s an hours round trip to go to Aldi, get the stuff, portion it and leave it in the fridge, that’s c £12.50 at minimum wage. Add a £5 for the stuff itself, a couple of miles of petrol at 45p a mile and you’re at £1.60 “extra” for the landlord… that doesn’t sound absurd.

Not sure how much of that you'd get for £20. Also, not everywhere is local to a farm/butchers.

Having said that, I wouldn't expect a breakfast box to be food I had to cook. I'd expect a continental breakfast.

smallsilvercloud · 26/05/2025 14:34

That’s rubbish I would have been disappointed and left it uneaten, for that I would expect cereal, fruit, tea, juice, croissants.
opened packet of bacon the rest was used by them or previous guests, I wouldn’t be happy.

FortyElephants · 26/05/2025 14:35

I hope you put that in the review!
I run an Airbnb and while I wouldn't want the faff of offering breakfast, if I did it wouldn't be to make a profit but to cement the 5* experience that I offer. I'd charge but I'd spend all the money on nice food. But as I say I wouldn't do it, it's not usually wanted or expected and too much food would get wasted for my liking.

DrCoconut · 26/05/2025 14:38

It would be OK if the price was reflective of what was provided. For £20 and self cooked I'd expect a lot more.
