To think this is not acceptable for a “breakfast bundle” at Airbnb?

Me and DP went away for a night away and picked to stay at an Airbnb on Saturday night. We checked in about 3 and had to leave at 9 on Sunday. It was expensive (around £150 for the night) but it was a nice place. The owner messaged me before we got there and asked if we would like to add on a breakfast box each. Sounded like a nice way to refuel for another day of walking so I said yes. A request was sent for £20, which seemed okay for a breakfast for 2.

When I got there, there was 2 buns from Aldi, a tin of beans from Aldi, 2 bacon rashers in the packet, 2 sausages and 2 hash browns, and 10 cherry tomatoes. It was in a plastic tub in the fridge.

I am not a complainer at all. I really don’t want to complain, but I really don’t think this is justified. Aibu?

Yanbu. Take photo and leave honest review. Why on earth do you have to leave at 9am on a Sunday... That's mad. We stayed in a holiday cottage not airb&b and were left more than that for free. Surely that's standard. We had local honey, bread and local eggs as well as local cake and few other bits. This was in Wales near Snowdon.

That is good advice!
It could have been an error, or the cleaners didn’t put in the food they were told to put in.

This is very true. When you have to rely on cleaners it's hard.

As hosts we live in fear of a 4 star review, so I can't see they would purposefully do this.

Yes, absolutely!! Totally agree with you! Would do anything to avoid a 4 star review! We only ever had one because the guest didn’t think we were close enough to town…
I used to check before every guest that everything was perfect, until we found a brilliant cleaning lady we can trust and rely on! 🙏🏼
It would be silly for the host to try to make £5-10 profit by providing a rubbish breakfast, when their business depends on the reviews. Equally, we always message people to check they are/were happy with everything, keeping the dialogue open so they can let us know if there is a problem.

Bjorkdidit · 28/05/2025 11:33

Well this shows how meaningless reviews are anyway. I never review anything but I would expect somewhere with a 5 star review to be exceptional, beyond normal expectations and a 4 star review place to be nice, everything generally good but not exceptional.

If people are expected to give 'nice, everything generally good but not exceptional' 5 stars, which must be the case because I've been to plenty of highly rated places that had a few niggles, then how are people supposed to distinguish between very good and out of this world if you're not supposed to drop even a single point unless a place has significant shortcomings?

GinAndJuice99 · 28/05/2025 11:43

9am checkout is ridiculous. I've started noticing hotels going to 10 rather than 11 or 12 as well. It's such a scam. The people need to fight back.

This is a real problem, I agree. An Airbnb host from where I stayed recently asked us to give them a five-star review, because anything less just drops you right down the algorithms, and no one sees the listing. As it happened this was a five-star place in my opinion, so I was happy to give them that review; but there have been plenty of places that I would've given a four, as in lovely and nothing wrong, but just missing that exceptional extra 'thing' that makes them a five.

But now, instead of seeming like a good review, that seems like a punishment Confused

It was poor value even it had been bought at Waitrose. I would have been much happier if the meat was in unopened packaging. Op says that it was the tin of beans and rolls that had Aldi labels. You cant really open the beans .

I agree then at least you know where it's come from.
Also, more importantly, the packaging would have the best before date which is critical for meat and dairy items.

JDM625 · 28/05/2025 12:46

I too wasn't aware they anything less than a 5* review is considered poor!

This might explain why I was given a scathing review the last time I stayed in one! My review of them was polite and factual- great location, the pool advertised was in another building around the corner, no chopping knife, good heating and plenty of blankets etc. Giving a 4 star.

Their reply was that I'd left the place filthy, moved furniture about, put plates back in the cupboard dirty! To say I was shocked was an understatement because it wasn't true. Never stayed in 1 since.

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/05/2025 12:55

Oh yes, for some places (AirBnB, Etsy, definitely others), leaving a less than 5 star review is in effect, punishing the business owner. It will drop them down the listings, remove 'star seller' status on Etsy... really really damages their business.

If you got what you were expecting, then leave a 5 star review. Use the actual review to make useful comments and note if anything was extra special.

It's crap, but neither buyer nor seller can change a system like AirBnB or Etsy - and some places if you're leaving 4 star or less reviews because you believe 5 star = better than expected/more than I actually paid for, then you may find yourself blacklisted!

It absolutely does, you are right. But the hosts of properties advertised on Air BnB can't do anything about it.

4 star means 'unsatisfactory'. Air BnB tell you ( as a host) that 4 means a service failure and they email you telling you to pull your socks up if you get a few on the bounce.

My friend recently had her listing removed and all her forward bookings cancelled because someone gave her a one star review. So basically she had her business closed down, despite having 120 five star reviews.

Id expect a breakfast box to be some combination of:

  • lovely fresh bread - not supermarket stuff, a nice sourdough
  • local butter/jams/honey
  • local farm eggs
  • butcher bacon or sausages
  • fresh fruit
  • posh muesli type cereal

I would not expect anything from a budget supermarket.

This list and the time taken for them to put it together would cost more than £20 though.

CookingFatCat · 28/05/2025 13:32

How mean!! Leave a review saying so.

Ottersmith · 28/05/2025 01:43

I don't understand how they run an Airbnb but don't at least take everything out of the packaging to make it look nicer. We had this recently, it all came from the local spar. If they had just taken the bacon out and put it in butcher paper etc we wouldn't have noticed as much.

But would you want stuff that's been removed from a hygienic packet and handled? Wouldn't fancy that at all. I'd expect such foodstuffs to be in their sealed packet, whether from Aldi or anywhere else.

Well we also don't know how the rest of the packet was removed, leaving only 2 sausages, 2 bits of bacon etc. Did they wear gloves, was it left from the previous guests? We don't know 😬

Scottsleeping · 26/05/2025 14:19

the owner said “it’s an amazing deal, you’ll have plenty to take home with you”

???? The portions were tiny!

So if 2 was left does that mean you and dh got 1 rasher and one sausage and 5/6 toms each

ArtTheClown · 29/05/2025 08:10

Just give then a shit rating. That really hurts Airbnb owners.

Awful! Having to leave at 9am is cheeky too!

I was thinking the same.

vickylou78 · 05/06/2025 14:42

Were there any croissants or pastries, jam, orange juice etc too? or just what was in the fridge?

PassingStranger · 05/06/2025 17:41

Not sure why you didn't ask.
Not sure why she didn't discuss it with you.
What if you had been vegetarian.
Sloppy all round.

Deffo would expect some cereal as well as a choice and some toast and butter etc.
