To think this is not acceptable for a “breakfast bundle” at Airbnb?

Me and DP went away for a night away and picked to stay at an Airbnb on Saturday night. We checked in about 3 and had to leave at 9 on Sunday. It was expensive (around £150 for the night) but it was a nice place. The owner messaged me before we got there and asked if we would like to add on a breakfast box each. Sounded like a nice way to refuel for another day of walking so I said yes. A request was sent for £20, which seemed okay for a breakfast for 2.

When I got there, there was 2 buns from Aldi, a tin of beans from Aldi, 2 bacon rashers in the packet, 2 sausages and 2 hash browns, and 10 cherry tomatoes. It was in a plastic tub in the fridge.

I am not a complainer at all. I really don’t want to complain, but I really don’t think this is justified. Aibu?

Quite simply the £15 markup is still not worth it.

OP said there was an Aldi 2 minutes drive round the corner, that may also have been a short walk away.

It might not be worth it, but if she’s outsourced the bother of getting it herself, and without checking what would be included, then that mark is whatever the mark up is.

I don’t disagree that it seems a bit steep, but it’s a lesson learned for another time.

Evilspiritgin · 27/05/2025 11:07

I live in the Lake District our local Wetherspoons does a breakfast for £7.95, the supermarket also sells Lorne Sausage and for a sat night in July before the kids break up , the premier inn is £237 for a standard room non flex,

if the owner is saying you could take things home?

  1. Are they relying upon someone else to make up the breakfast box and they obviously aren’t or
  1. Could you have missed some other foods elsewhere?
  1. Owner is a very cheap person-

I doubt it’s no 2, I know it goes against the usual eaters on mn, but I would expect 2 of everything for myself except the beans , they don’t go with breakfast

murasaki · 26/05/2025 14:01

For 20 quid and you have to cook it yourself???

For £5 that's reasonable.

Pealeaf · 27/05/2025 18:26

I would tell the owners it was very disappointing and not what was expected given the cost on top of £150 for one night. Give them a chance to explain or put right. If no joy include in your review to warn others.

I would have expected a no cook quality breakfast eg pastries/breakfast rolls, jam/honey, fruit juice, yogurt and some fresh fruit. They could still have made a profit on that (Aldi would be ok with me) while meeting my expectations.

😱 The carbs! The sugar! Diabetes on a plate! They might just as well have left you a four pack of mars bars FFS. 😤

mugglewump · 27/05/2025 18:37

For £20, I'd have expected them to cook it for me and provide room service! I would have left it and asked for a refund. Our last holiday home (not AirBnB) left us, tea and proper coffee, a pint of milk, a pat of butter, box of eggs, bacon and an artisan loaf - all included. Make sure you mention the poor quality breakfast in your review.

the owner said “it’s an amazing deal, you’ll have plenty to take home with you”

???? The portions were tiny!

What with 2 rashers of bacon? How much did they think would be leftover?

Awful! Having to leave at 9am is cheeky too!

I think it may had been OP and DP choice to leave at 9am because they were going to do another day of walking.

spanishcheese · 27/05/2025 20:15

Any eggs?

We had a breakfast hamper at an Airbnb, I put a half finished yoghurt in the fridge to have later but while we were out the host took it out and it turned up in the next mornings breakfast hamper ... yesterday's half yoghurt pot .

Endofyear · 27/05/2025 20:28

I would have asked what's in the breakfast box before agreeing to pay 20 quid for it!

fetchacloth · 27/05/2025 20:30

Should have been double quantities to justify the charge.
As other PP have said , Wetherspoons or similar would have been a better option for a similar price. No cooking or washing up either.

Donsyb · 27/05/2025 21:07

SlightlyFurther · 26/05/2025 14:03

Yes, I’d agree. I mean, it wouldn’t work for me, as I’m vegetarian, but it sounds like a just about adequate provision for an ‘English breakfast’.

What were you expecting? Did you ask in advance?

I’d expect about double the quantity for starters!

allmymonkeys · 27/05/2025 21:52

I'd have taken a picture of the "breakfast box" with a tag on it reading "£20 extra for this" to upload with the review. At least future customers might be forewarned.

RareFatball · 27/05/2025 23:19

Bumblebeestiltskin · 26/05/2025 14:00

I would have asked what was included before saying yes and paying, personally.

Agree!!!!!!

ellyeth · 27/05/2025 23:25

I don't think it is acceptable. You could get a decent breakfast at a nice cafe or pub for around £12.

SaveAndEarnMoreMoney · 28/05/2025 00:27

I always ask what I’ll get for my money before I pay. I think they should have given a bit more for what you’ve paid, definitely some eggs and butter too. You’d expect 2 sausages and 2 rashers of bacon/person at least, and 2 eggs & 2 slices of bread for toast too…
We have an Airbnb and we always leave things like 1 litre of milk, porridge, musli/cereal, cereal/breakfast bars, tea, coffee, sugar, and some cooking basics like pasta, pasta sauce, oil, etc. as standard, included in the nightly rate.
OP didn’t say they had to check out by 9:00am but that they had to leave. Usually check out time is 11:00am, I’ve not seen it earlier as 10:00am anywhere before.
I would recommend putting it down in your review what you paid for the breakfast and what you got. On Airbnb they can’t see the review you left until they write you a review too. If they don’t write you a review, they’ll only be able to see it after 14 days and they can’t write a review for you by then, so they can’t retaliate if they are the petty kind.
Just always ask what you’ll get for your money before you pay, to make sure it meets your expectations. 💛

I'm going to go with the minority here and say that the owner has made a mistake. To me it looks like they were supposed to empty the fridge from the previous tenants and replenish with new stock for OP's visit, but something has happened and it was missed. Especially with them saying there would be plenty left over. Nobody is this brazen surely, especially when they rely on reviews for future business.

OP should get in touch and ask whether there had been an error. If so, they will get a refund for the breakfast box. If not, they downgrade their final review accordingly and make a comment about it on their review for future potential visitors.

That is good advice!
It could have been an error, or the cleaners didn’t put in the food they were told to put in.

Ottersmith · 28/05/2025 01:43

I don't understand how they run an Airbnb but don't at least take everything out of the packaging to make it look nicer. We had this recently, it all came from the local spar. If they had just taken the bacon out and put it in butcher paper etc we wouldn't have noticed as much.

Krest · 28/05/2025 02:15

Yes that’s a bit of a rip off but I’ve seen this on Airbnb before , people offering £20 breakfast boxes for things like this for cheap.

Agree, that's all someone else will be doing anyway. It's all about the presentation

Suchasonganddance · 28/05/2025 07:57

Hard tack and a greasy pan to wash. I would mention it in your review to warn off others who would probably be thinking in terms of quality muesli, croissant and local jam.

It was poor value even it had been bought at Waitrose. I would have been much happier if the meat was in unopened packaging. Op says that it was the tin of beans and rolls that had Aldi labels. You cant really open the beans .
