Woman yelled at me in public toilets

empee47 · 25/05/2025 07:58

Went to Tesco yesterday and visited the loo. Washed my hands and turned on the hand dryer and another lady started yelling at me that I was upsetting her daughter because of the noise. Daughter looked to be about 3 and was visibly distressed. Had they asked me not to use the dryer until they’d left the sink area and explained why, I wouldn’t have done. Apparently I can’t possibly be a mum myself as everyone knows kids are scared of the noise. Happens that I have 2 kids myself and the noise has never bothered them. It was the aggressive way she was bellowing at me in public that annoyed me and the sense of entitlement that everything had to run her way.

Come on that was never seriously a thing. It was something one person likely said and the media picked up on it as an example of 'wokery'

No it legitimately happened. I was subjected to two such gatherings personally. It died a quick death fortunately but it did happen.

Unpaidviewer · 25/05/2025 09:41

I would have pointed out that maybe her yelling was causing her to be more upset than the dryer noise.

Sahara123 · 25/05/2025 09:41

Ah silly me, should’ve read the whole thread, it’s the germ ridden air that’s the problem ! The air you breathe in while you’re in the toilet 🙄

Gettingbysomehow · 25/05/2025 08:26

I speak a second language fluently so in these type of situations I just pretend I can't speak English and blather on in the other language. It works a treat for arseholes. 😂

When I've gone into the toilets overseas where there is someone standing there expecting payment I find my German comes in very handy!

EmmaRose89 · 25/05/2025 09:44

My daughter was scared of hand dryers when she was little but I would not have shouted at someone for using one.

CloverPyramid · 25/05/2025 09:44

She’s unreasonable. My son is terrified of hand dryers, but it never occurred to me that anyone else should accommodate that. I’ve taught him to cover his ears and I give him a cuddle and soothe him while it’s going on. He’s gradually getting more used to them.

SwanOfThoseThings · 25/05/2025 09:46

I don't have children, but I know it's a 'thing' that some children are scared of them. However, I wouldn't assume that every child is, that's bonkers! If a parent asked I'd be happy not to use the drier, or wait till they'd left depending on whether I was in a hurry and what the weather was like for going out with damp hands.

JaneKensington · 25/05/2025 09:47

A woman who acts like that in public is not modelling decent behaviour to her daughter.
Hand dryers are there for a reason and we use them.
If he daughter has special needs or has a condition with her ears/hearing and can't handle noise then ear defenders or avoiding public places is better, and that's not your problem.

I'd have told her straight up to get stuffed

Thomasina79 · 25/05/2025 09:49

Maybe the child was distresses at her mother’s behaviour rather than the drier! She thinks ‘here we go again, my mother is unhinged!’.

Annoyeddd · 25/05/2025 08:06

And why do you think they are unhygienic? I see so many silly women in public toilets flapping their hands around and not looking at the instructions for the dryer then getting out a couple of tissues from their bags (or even using toilet paper) - this isn't designed to do the job

You should do some research before deriding the “silly women” who won’t use the hand dryers. There’s actually a great deal of research out there concluding that drying by paper towels is more hygiene. And no, I can’t be bothered to give you a link- look it up yourself.

Koalafan · 25/05/2025 09:52

ScottBakula · 25/05/2025 09:33

@Koalafan paper towels are generally not great esp in public toilets.
They are bad for the environment in both production and disposal, people leave used ones on the sinks and floors , use them to line toilet seats then flush , leave them on the floor or put them in the sani bins.
Or block the toilets with them.

I have cleaned public toilets in the past and was very glad then they started getting phased out.

I like them.
I use the minimum needed and dispose of properly.

Dramatic · 25/05/2025 09:53

I've got 5 children and several nieces and nephews and not a single one of them has been scared of hand dryers. One of my friends kids was scared of them though. So she's ridiculous to say every child is like that, for every child that's scared of them there's 20 more who aren't.

ButItWasNotYourFaultButMine · 25/05/2025 09:54

Yes some children are afraid of the hand driers. Others love them and won't stop setting the things off in the school restrooms!

YANBU if she failed to ask you first, she is

notacooldad · 25/05/2025 09:54

I mean I wouldn’t use hand dryer because they’re woefully unhygienic but yeah the noise is also horrific
maybe just take your own tissues next time

You carry your own tissues to use all the time?

bizarre reply

Goditsmemargaret · 25/05/2025 09:56

@Funkeh maybe just get a life

Topseyt123 · 25/05/2025 09:57

I'd have just shrugged and paid her no attention at all. Twat.

I too had a child who was afraid of these types of noises but I didn't shield her from them or yell at other people for using the facilities provided (which I also used). I just told said child that it was a perfectly normal noise and nothing to worry about. It took a fair length of time, but she did grow out of it

Wanderdust · 25/05/2025 09:57

God, my son doesn't like the hand dryer at times (he's getting better tho) and I'd never, ever dream of even asking anyone not to use it! Let alone chastise them for using it if they didn't know. He needs to get used to it so I feel avoiding them completely doesn't help (unless they have some serious sensory issues of course but in our case, my son is contrary about them!).

Oganesson118 · 25/05/2025 09:59

What a ridiculous woman. My daughter was scared of that noise at that age but I never dreamt of asking others not to use them, we just managed it as best we could.

TicTac80 · 25/05/2025 09:59

YANBU. My DC weren't scared of the noise, but I remember my friend's DC was terrified....so after knowing that, what I tend to do since knowing that is just call out, "does anyone have a problem with the noise if I use the hand dryer?".

SpunkySquid · 25/05/2025 10:01

She was a twat. I’ve never known a kid be scared of a hand dryer.

Poppyyoutwat · 25/05/2025 10:02

One of mine was terrified of the noise of hand driers when she was small.

She just had to deal with it in pubic toilets and learn that her fear didn’t dictate what other people could and couldn’t do.

Some parents are absolute lunatics who think the world revolves around their children.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 25/05/2025 10:04

Funkeh · 25/05/2025 08:07

Because a lot of the older style ones (such as supermarkets) recycle air from the toilets, you are aware of what air in toilets with no ventilation is like right? 💩

And yet you're in there, breathing the germy air, letting those germy molecules settle on your skin and hair and clothes. Wouldn't you be better off not even stepping through the door?

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/05/2025 10:05

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 25/05/2025 08:01

Yeah, she was being ridiculous. My own kids were frightened of hand dryers when they were small but it was my responsibly to warn them that the hand dryer would be noisy and advise that they covered their ears.

Same.
It's not up to other people to have psychic abilities.
I'd say, "Someone is going to use the dryer, so civet your ears. "

Fuck me, you are arguing over hand driers 🤣

Come on, the fact is, a huge proportion of people don’t wash their hands at all after wiping thier arses, so a hand drier is the least of your worries in public.
