I am having an ongoing problem with my downstairs neighbour. My daughter and I moved into a large apartment in December it’s a really good area and we like it here.

It started as soon as we moved in, there is a lady in her 60s with her adult son about 20. It appears the son stays up all night and sleeps all day and games under my room until around 4am shouting at the screen. I spoke to lady she was very nice said she would tell him to keep it and down and went on a long spiel about him having mental health problems and waiting for a diagnosis for autism so I have tried to cut them a bit of slack but it really isn’t on I have to listen to podcasts to sleep. What has really annoyed me is that my daughters bedroom door is a bit stiff so it makes a bit of noise when she closes it in the mornings but I am talking about 8am, we are out all day and go to bed by 10 as I have work too.

Now the son has started slamming doors at 4am I am assuming in revenge so I have reported them to the council. Autism and mental health is not a reason to keep other people up all night surely? I think it’s completely out of order. She said he has insomnia too. Anyone else dealt with this?

I am not moving out it is an ideal location for my daughter’s school we are very happy here. They will keep quiet during the night and I will use the authorities to enforce it.

Good luck with that 🤣 I’m with others here… what opinions are you looking for out of this thread?

LurkerForLife · 26/05/2025 15:57

To add to my previous comment, have you tried just speaking to the mum again and letting her know how miserable it’s making you? You’ve only mentioned that you spoke to her once and then said her telling you about her son’s difficulties was a ‘spiel’. I think it’s very clear by the replies on this post that you don’t like them and probably decided after having that conversation that you didn’t.
Your entitlement on this post is awful - like you somehow are more deserving to stay in your home than your neighbours because their lifestyle choices differ to yours. Literally talking waffle about using authorities to enforce it etc instead of just being a neighbourly neighbour and going round and having another conversation with them. Yikes.

I really do not want to seem rude but you’re literally just getting your first taste of living in social housing. The fact that your other neighbours that are decent, own their homes, speaks volumes here. This won’t get better and you literally will not be able to force them out of their house because of their behaviour - it will just be a long and continuous battle with your local authority until you decide you’ve had enough and move yourself. Continue to listen to your podcasts or buy some earplugs and try not to let your neighbours actions or lack of affect your life and own mental health so much. Literally nothing you can do to change it. We had to move out of a rented flat that was in a council block because the social housing tenant upstairs would blast loud music and lift weights at midnight every night - it was absolutely awful so I do sympathise but nothing you do will stop it - just from experience.

It is my first taste of social housing you are correct so I have never really experienced people with such a lack of respect for other people. My daughter had her sats last week and luckily she sleeps through anything but if the had woke her I would have been furious. I will just keep complaining I have been decent and cut them a lot of slack but surely a woman well into her 60s would say come on but she stays up all night too.

times have changed and due to the housing/private market a lot of people will now have to accept social housing do we just put up with it? Sorry not happening. I will have the council put in sound recording and there’s no way they will let this fly. This is nothing to do with mental health.

i will take on peoples opinions but moving out is not an option it would be too disruptive to my child about to have the massive change of going to high school. I can hear and she is screaming with laughter with his friends online clearly high in dope. Now that is not acceptable at 4am the smell comes through when my window is open so dont try to tell me I am in the wrong here.

Confused.com here. Are you in the UK because you’ve just posted it’s 4am, but it’s 4pm here. “She” is screaming with laughter? Who? Is that a typo, did you mean to type he? Also, what do you expect the “authorities” to do, station police outside your door 24/7? Or is (as I suspect) this thread just a massive windup?

wtf are you talking about I know what time it is. I am talking that’s what is happening on a regular basis at 4am. Sometime 2am sometimes 5am. If you want to antagonise someone it’s not going to be me
ok.

PP are correct, you can complain all you want, but the likely result is that they won't be evicted - no matter how much you're going to make sure of it.

Don’t want them evicted just to shut up. Reasonable

I'm a little bit worried about you at the minute. Do you have support? It seems to me there's more to this than a noisy neighbour.

cherrycherrypickin · 26/05/2025 16:10

Reasonable, yes; possible, maybe not. IF he has a health condition it's likely they won't be able to do anything at all.

Best start saving to afford a private rental if this is honestly going to affect you so much. And I can assure you (as someone who was refused social housing when my small family was evicted to the point of bailiffs turfing us out, council wouldn’t help us or up our banding because we both had minimum wage paid jobs. I had to up my hours to full time when my son was 1 to be able to afford a private rental) that most people will not be relying on social housing in the near future. You are incredibly lucky if you land yourself one in my opinion and it irks me to hear people complaining about it. Go spend £1400 or however much it costs in your area to private rent a home if you want to have decent neighbours - but even then there’s no guarantee :-D
So I’d just suck it up and appreciate the extortionately low rent you get to pay each month lol

LikeARacoonOnMeth · 26/05/2025 16:12

Blimey op. I’d dial the aggression down. If you act like this in all your complaints the council will be quick to label you the problem, rather than them.
It’s shit, I get it, I had noisy neighbours and it made me ill. My MH was in tatters. We had to move.
I hope you get a resolution but I think you may need to adjust your expectations on what the outcome is likely to be, because I don’t imagine it will be them evicted, and I don’t imagine anything will be looked in to with any speed.
Wishing you luck, I know how awful it is.

I have had about 10 very reasonable conversations with her because I am a very reasonable person. Not entitled. Every single human being is entitled to sleep im making stupid mistakes at work it’s not fair. Jesus they are out in force today aren’t they.

Sorry, but you sound a bit unhinged. Not sure if you realise how offensive you are being to people living in social housing.

Locutus2000 · 26/05/2025 16:15

Lesleyann25 · 26/05/2025 15:19

Honestly I am not moving we had quite a bit of upheaval due to split with her father and she loves it here. I will ensure that it ends and I am definitely not going to pacified by the boys gender, Autism none of that makes you a selfish disrespectful person. They live a dysfunctional life and if they want to continue to do so they can move. I mean it too. The mother is in her 60s I could understand more if the boy lived there alone. She will sort it out or she will move out.

It only took four posts for the mask to slip.

Ilikewinter · 26/05/2025 16:16

I was going to post on the side of the OP, and whilst I still am for the most part, the increasingly angry and aggressive responses aren't really doing her any favours.

The laugh is because you haven't got a cats chance. Unless he's dealing or got a meth lab underneath you the police won't be interested.

Just for the record, I'm a home owner as are my neighbours who are tosspots, and incapable of closing a door without slamming it.

Your only hope is to, if you can't speak reasonably with them, record the noise and take to the council.

Ok I am unhinged, i let me kids have friends round smoking weed at all hours and I am unhinged. I am not saying anything about people in social housing apart from the ones who don’t let you sleep because they are totally irresponsible
