Following on from my romance scammers thread, I'd like to see the justifications for this

We don't hear anything about male prison officers being dismissed because of relationships or rape of female prisoners because it is very rare. The prison service likes to recruit females in the male estate because they are calmed by the presence of women and they enjoy female company which they miss. Female teachers or mentors are always more popular than their male counterparts. Unfortunately, the prison service has seen this influx of vacuous Instagram bimbos who have no care for the prisoners or even for themselves.

can we see your proof of this please?

Being groomed or blackmailed is not consenting, therefore it is rape. I’m quite gobsmacked that you’ve implied rape is only when someone is physically overpowered.

ETA hopefully it’s just the way you’ve written it and I’m wrong.

Poster 1:Loving the MN double standards going on yet again.
If these where male prison officers sleeping with female inmates all we would be seeing was how these male officers are abusing their position of power and taking advantage of vulnerable women.

But when the shoe is on the other foot...

Poster 2: I get what you're saying but a female officer can't rape a prisoner like a male officer could. That's the difference I think

Me: But in many cases, the guards arent violently raping the female prisoners. They're grooming them or blackmailing them but it isnt like theyre being physically overpowered as such.

I said this because Poster 2 implied that the ability to physically overpower a (presumably male) prisoner is limited with a female officer. I said that male guards aren't using their physical power to rape prisoners. They're grooming them (implying female officers can do that too).

I hope that gives more context.

Security companies say the same. Thats why there are a growing number of female only security firms.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 20/05/2025 21:21

There was a very popular female officer on the wing who was tiny and very feminine who was always very nice to the lads but also very firm and had them all dancing to her tune. They loved her and she didn't flirt or have favourites. She treated them with respect. A lot of the male officers envied her because she had such good rapport with the lads. Just goes to show it can be done.

It’s not rare for women in prison to be sexually abused/in relationships (depending on your perspective) with male or female officers. Proportionally of course there are fewer cases because there are fewer women in prison, but it’s certainly no rarer within that population than among men. You hear about it less often because the press love to put pictures of women in the news, and because women are less likely to be receiving drugs or phones as part of the transaction. And probably because women are less stupid than men at these things.

ETA: https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/prison-staff-inappropriate-misconduct-sexual-abuse/

From the article:
‘Women working in men’s prisons received 72% of the total sanctions handed out for inappropriate relationships with prisoners in the past five years, with 51 women fired, openDemocracy’s investigation has found. Nine male employees working in men’s prisons were also dismissed over such relationships.
But the far lower population of women prisoners – 3,600, compared to 83,600 in the men’s estate – means they are disproportionately at risk. Six male employees were sanctioned, including three who were dismissed, over an inappropriate relationship with a female inmate.’

Not idiots, they know exactly what they're doing - exploiting prisoners for cheap sexual thrills. Just the same as if it were male prison officers with female prisoners.

Don’t think it’s as black & white as this - think in some cases it could be grooming / manipulation… every case is different imo. But there may be some trends.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 21/05/2025 13:53

Isn't this due to the huge problems pretty much every prison is having in recruiting and retaining staff?

I recently heard some interviews on the radio, and realised that the prison service is so desperate that:
(a) there is much less vetting than there was in the past - and some recruitment is being done online, rather than with a face-to-face interview
(b) the length of time spent training new officers (teaching them how to deal with highly manipulative prisoners etc) keeps being cut, shorter and shorter.

In Norway, aspiring prison officers are expected to undergo a university-accredited course lasting two years. The situation varies widely around the world - in most places there is a mixture of formal and informal training, shadowing etc - covering all the knowledge and skills required - but in the UK the basic training now only lasts something like 10-12 weeks!

How do we know its rare? It's actually been very poorly researched so we dont really know. Perhaps you can link to evidence I've not seen. There is US data that says male employees have raped and sexually assaulted female prisoners in two thirds of US prisons. So it's certainly not rare there.

BarneyRonson · 21/05/2025 14:30

Unintelligent, yes, not well mentally, yes, incapable of making good decisions, definitely. These female prison officers weren’t fit for the job. The training and interviewing should be more rigorous. But the wrong person in a job and result will be problems.

Gettingbysomehow · 21/05/2025 14:40

When you start prison training they tell you exactly what the penalty is for these types of behaviours. I never wanted to pay that kind of penalty personally so wasn't at all tempted.

Vile. But that is not a prison officer and her recruitment will be contracted out to a local education provider.

Did you not receive an induction course and warned about the dangers?

Love the idea an induction course is all that's needed to prevent complex human issues.

It's not rare at all! Female prisoners are sexually assaulted all the time! And they have relationships with male guards too, frequently.

Prisoners can be very manipulative. And I do think 21 is very young to do a job like that. An officer at our prison was recruited at 19 (I think) and started off giving chewing gum to some prisoners. Then biscuits etc. Eventually he was bringing in phones. It was built up over a long period of time. Yes obviously he is accountable but you can see how some people get in those situations.

Some women have a weird obsession with dangerous men and ones in prison, ironically, are seen as "safe" because they can't get to them in real life. Chris Watts receives gifts and mail from women all the time and he killed his pregnant wife and their two little girls. Even Dahmer had "fan mail".

The article describes her as a prison officer and as a Band 3 workshop instructor - either way, she’s employed by HMPPS, not by an education provider.

The fact is that quite a lot of women find the capacity for violence an attractive thing in men. Which I suppose is some lizard brain artefact. And some women are particularly attracted to that in criminal types.

Many women are enjoy positive sexual attention from men.

The whole "rebel reformed by love" is a huge romantic trope, one that dominates women's pornography romance novels.

In my experience quite a lot of otherwise fairly competent women can have these kinds of feelings, I've seen it in nurses surprisingly often. I wouldn't be surprised if it might be part of the interest in being prison guards for some women.

Thanks @TempestTost . I think that's as close as I'm going to get to an answer to the question: "Why do the women do it?".

It's not complex to follow rules that tell you not to get involved with people who might be a danger to you. Teachers are told not to have relationships with their students for the same reasons. What bit of that do you not understand?

It obviously is complex since so many people
don’t follow it. The idea that ‘rules’ are all that’s needed is hilarious given the context - people are in prison for breaking ‘rules’, prison staff break rules all the time and yet you seem surprised that people break rules.

(Teachers of children are an entirely different kettle of fish, so weird analogy).
