Following on from my romance scammers thread, I'd like to see the justifications for this

They are the height of foolishness.

She was 21 at the time. I do feel like that played a massive part in her vulnerability. The prison service should be employing over 25’s

MounjaroMounjaro · 19/05/2025 17:53

I think the worst case I saw was the woman prison officer having sex with an inmate while being filmed and with an audience. I really thought she needed psychiatric help.

Roadtripitis · 19/05/2025 17:54

As an ex cop of thirty years (so come across lots of criminals) I can’t imagine for a second being stupid enough to find them attractive or have sex with one.

I worked in the prison system once. During the induction you were told never to give any personal info to prisoners and not to get overly involved. I wonder what is going wrong.

I worked with offenders at 18. Not in a million years was I mature enough to make adult decisions regarding it.

A 21 yo female guard should never have been able to be alone with any inmates.

I can more easily put myself in the shoes of a murderer than these people, literally boggles my mind.

A young attractive woman surrounded by men in captivity desperate for sexual fulfillment..... what could possibly go wrong?! I'm sorry if this offends anyone but I can't see how any woman would want to work in that environment. A family friend was a librarian inside a male prison and she used to have some utter horror stories about the inmates. I don't know how she ever felt safe there.

It’s not that simple. Prison officers are easily groomed

No they're not if they follow the rules. First, do not ever divulge any personal information to prisoners as they have many friends outside. Believe me, they will try asking about your private life. Number 2, don't get personally involved.

A lot of criminals are excellent at manipulating and exploiting people.

The officers have training on not being groomed or getting into personal relationships but I think some of these criminals are being underestimated here.

My husband is a Prision officer and I was shocked when I realised how young most of his colleagues are. So many young women working in a men’s Prision, DH says women can often diffuse a situation better than male officers but I still think the risks outweigh the benefit.

That's insane. You're saying you empathise more with a murderer than with a woman having sex with an inmate?!

No, that’s not what she’s saying.

ginasevern · 19/05/2025 18:29

Has this always been the case and we just know more about it because of 24/7 news and social media? There does seem to be a glut of it recently.

IShouldNotCoco · 19/05/2025 18:29

I think it’s people who can’t properly love anyone and they know they will never have to be fully involved. Could be wrong of course.

SudsySaturday · 19/05/2025 18:34

She was stupid, of course.

But to put a 21 year old woman in a male prison like that is just fucking madness. And forgive me for how this sounds but especially woman who looks like her. She'd have been an immediate target as soon as she stepped foot in there. So dangerous.

I don't think prisons should be allowed opposite sexed guards personally.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 19/05/2025 18:35

I did my induction 20 years ago and I took the advice of the senior prison officer very seriously about how to protect yourself. I can't imagine that the induction has changed drastically since then. One of the volunteers on my wing was smuggling in choccie treats for one of her favourite prisoners and was told to leave. I regard all this news as a very serious deterioration of the prison service.

Loving the MN double standards going on yet again.
If these where male prison officers sleeping with female inmates all we would be seeing was how these male officers are abusing their position of power and taking advantage of vulnerable women.

But when the shoe is on the other foot...

Yes, of course. And 'education' has a very small effect on human behaviour. It's documented that 'educating' people has much less effect than a host of other things; modeling and mentoring, making things easy or hard, making things attractive, making them socially acceptable or not.

You have an induction course. Then you see the way prisoners are treated and spoken about by other guards, you feel sorry and sad. You've been trained and socialised to be a support human for men. Men can't manage their behaviour, poor babies. You've been socialised to think of anger and violence as sadness in men. Maybe you've experienced unhealthy or abusive relationships and this is your comfy place.

It's very very easy for a manipulative man to influence a naive 21 yo.
