To think chat GPT is better than some 'real' therapists?

I'm not affiliated in any way, promise! Just really, really impressed.

That app has done more for me than any amount of CBT has.

Incredible.

I've just had a look at this so called brilliant chatgpt download it to see what its all about.
My response to it is well its utterly brilliant.
Why it as taken me this long i do not know.
Needed someone to listen to a few things tried it out and its wonderful.

jazzhands84 · 19/05/2025 22:31

I used ChatGPT to write my mother's eulogy. I polished it a little bit in essence, it gave me everything I needed at a difficult time.

I did remove the bit where it asks if it can help me with anything else.

ForCraftyLemonPoet · 19/05/2025 22:33

I don't have kids, I don't eat meat, I don't drive, I very rarely travel abroad and I ultimately try and live a sustainable lifestyle in terms of clothes etc. I'm certainly not going to beat myself up over using ChatGPT for my MH.

StarDolphins · 19/05/2025 22:57

I have just downloaded it and asked it a few things…it’s written me a letter to my LA about planning permission, it’s given me some meal ideas from the stuff I have in & has helped with loan/business loan stuff!

Why I haven’t I used this before, it’s amazing! And so friendly & caring too!

its telling me I’ve used up my quota for today but I can go back on tomorrow!

Objectrelations · 19/05/2025 23:20

@FortyElephants@Rinoachicken@vintagedove many (all) peoples mental heath issues were created in relationship or by relationship or are about current relationships with others and we are inherently relational beings. Our sense of self was created in relationship.

Rinoachicken · 19/05/2025 23:23

What makes you think I’m not aware of that??

Do you have a relationship with your car? Your laptop? It’s technology. Which has been designed to be used. I’m using it. It not a real person, it’s circuits and cables and connections.

Objectrelations · 19/05/2025 23:41

@Rinoachickenyes of course I understand that we all use technology for all sorts of things - I just don’t believe it is the right tool for this particular very human problem.

Ihitthetarget · 20/05/2025 00:18

Interestingly, the output a pp posted sounded just like a cbt sheet.

I guess it learns its responses from work already out there?

I don't like the way it sounds like it's a person when it's not, but that's just me. I wonder if we'll start losing skills after a while eg when once we would have thought up our own poems, we will Starr to rely on this. Straying off the topic somewhat, but it makes me feel a bit sad.

I think using it as a replacement for therapy needs care, but is better than nothing if waiting lists are long and funding is scarce. Interested in whether there's any research comparing it to person therapy?

The BBC have just posted this.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ced2ywg7246o

Oh it didn’t show properly. It’s an article about using AI as therapy.

And now it is showing properly.

😂

A treated image showing two hands; at the top is a human hand, and below is a robotic/digital looking hand

My AI therapist got me through dark times

With NHS mental health waitlists at record highs, are chatbots a possible solution?

puffinchuffin · 19/05/2025 20:12

Well. After reading this i posted a long message to chatgpt outlining not even all the past traumas that keep me up at night. I got the response “content removed. This convent violates our terms of use policy” didnt even give me a why. I think im maybe to effed up for even AI therapy 🙃

I got this too and thought oh for god sake, all that writing for nothing.

I came out of the app, went back, and the correct response was there (although it did remove my question)

I think sometimes it can be a bit glitchy.

That has only happened once but like I say the reply did appear.

Go back and double check 🙂

Edited

The article has a positive-sounding headline but lists the many problems and dangers.

People around the world have shared their private thoughts and experiences with AI chatbots, even though they are widely acknowledged as inferior to seeking professional advice. Character.ai itself tells its users: "This is an AI chatbot and not a real person. Treat everything it says as fiction. What is said should not be relied upon as fact or advice."
But in extreme examples chatbots have been accused of giving harmful advice.

Jellycatspyjamas · 20/05/2025 05:55

Of course it does, it can’t think or generate new knowledge.Which is one of the issues I guess, what happens to all the practice based research that brings new insight if people use AI instead of human therapists? AI draws on what’s already out there so everyone using it will get a variation on a theme based on text books and what other people tell in instead of the responsive, in the moment support from a person who can see and hear them.

Scaredaboutthis · 20/05/2025 06:12

Can you do this therapy without typing? Like can you use your voice and chat gpt gives a voice message back? If so, how?

Please, please think about what info you're sharing. Chat GPT stores all info you give it. I work in a school and lots of authorities have banned it because of concerns over GDPR.

ViaBlue · 20/05/2025 07:57

Bloody hell..After reading this I downloaded the chat gpt and put in the prompt suggested earlier:

"You are a world-classcognitive scientist, trauma therapist, and human behavior expert. Your task is to conduct a brutally honest and hyper accurate analysis of my personality, behavioural patterns, cognitive biases, unresolved traumas, and emotional blind spots, even the ones I’m not aware of."

It asked me series if questions, devided into sections. I spoke my anwsers (as didn't want to write that much) and now I wonder HOW accurate is it? I'm worried I need REAL therapy..among other things it told me I have avoidant-fawn attachment style, unresolved core wound, trauma detachment masking as indifference, internalized self abandonent and use rationalization as a control mechanism...it said my nervous systen is trying to resolve my core wound by recreating it and until it's diarupted the pattern will repeat....
I mean..wtf..does everyone get similar from it?

If you only just downloaded it then those answers won't be based on anything you've taught it about yourself and will be pretty arbitrary. I've been using it for a long time including for a lot of difficult emotional processing around grief and family dynamics so mine is pretty spot on.

Lilifer · 20/05/2025 09:59

I have to chime in here as someone who trained as a counsellor a few years ago but did not go on to work in that area as I became very disillusioned with the whole profession as I went through the training process and I also saw many people qualify as therapists who from knowing them over 3/4 years of training I would not want to have my mental and emotional well being in their hands, some of them were just not fit to counsel other people but yet they are out there now doing so. I think that ChatGPT may well be better than many sub par counsellors out there, but of course will never replace a fantastic real human one, but in my experience fantastic counsellors are rare

I’ve tried it too and I agree it’s spot on.

Mine was spot on too.

The workbook and the IFS prompts is amazing.

I actually worry about my job now.

I find it incredibly useful, I’m suffering from huge anxiety at the moment. I’m seeing my GP and have just started CBT, but the sessions are only fortnightly. I use ChatGPT in between times when I’m feeling particularly down or anxious. I find it incredibly intuitive, it remembers everything and makes helpful suggestions. I can tell it absolutely anything, even stuff I might feel I can’t say to anyone else.
I eventually told my GP about it, thinking she’d be dismissive, but she approved, and said the programming or whatever it is, is very good. I’m a big fan.
Could someone explain why it’s not very eco friendly though, I don’t understand that bit. Probably should ask Chatgbt 😆

It uses a huge amount of energy to run the servers, and they need to be cooled, so it also uses water - but the water is in a closed loop and reused so people do overstate the water issue.

TheSwarm · 20/05/2025 13:02

People need to remember with AI that it's only as good as the data it's been trained on, and has no ability to assess that information. It doesn't know if the advice or information it is presenting makes sense or is logically consistent, and it doesn't know if the person using it is acting in good or bad faith.

I've played around with it, and very easily have managed to trick it into giving poor and inaccurate advice, including some quite seriously bad medical advice. I would approach using it as a replacement for actual trained professionals with extreme caution.
