To absolutely not want closer ties to Europe

What is the matter with Stammer toadying up to the EU. We voted Out. Has he forgotten. I switched the TV off when I heard the word contribution and free movement. Here we go again. Shafted and ripped off at every turn and following their dumb rules. It's groundhog day. I'm furious.

Remember Boris talking about the “oven ready” deal which looked remarkably similar to the ones that he and his ERG mates blocked when May was PM?

Mere Details! Hufflepuffle.

You can ask as often as you like. I do not want to live under EU law.

You mean like EU laws like the working time directive which limits working hours, ensures adequate rest periods for workers etc? So your boss can't make you work mega long hours?
Bloody awful one, eh?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 19/05/2025 15:14

Clavinova · 19/05/2025 15:11

We do have tariff-free access to the single market for goods - membership of the single market with freedom of movement of people is not the same thing.

That's because we have a trade deficit with the EU so it suits them.

WestwardHo1 · 19/05/2025 15:14

Madcatdudette · 19/05/2025 15:11

I think the issue is that the ECHR and post Brexit European Law is not understood in the context of British law.
As I understand it’s only parliament that can overturn a UK Supreme Court’s ruling.
Some European laws were put into uk law in Brexit.
Law is complicated, I certainly don’t have anything beyond an extremely basic ‘understanding’.
It would be nice if posters could get off their high horses and explain the pros or cons to the OP rather than just insult them 🤷‍♀️
Try ‘Trade = Good because you will get cheaper stuff’ rather than ‘You’re a fuckwit’

I think posters are on their high horse because @Viviennemary clearly doesn't want explanations and has been displaying similar levels of understanding since the actual Brexit vote, despite all the explanations that have been given. She just appears to want to live on an island and have nothing to do with any other countries, and yet somehow still prosper.

So really you don’t have enough knowledge to be able to give a specific answer therefore you are just wound up and furious about something that you really don’t understand….laughable, busy your mind with more simplistic issues that your brain might be able to process

You clearly don't have a grasp of the basics.

I suggest you stay away from the news given you are unable to understand what is actually happening.

It upsets me greatly that people like you removed so much from so many.

Clavinova · 19/05/2025 14:54

The prime minister said: “What the British public will be voting for is to leave the EU and leave the single market.”

That wasn't the question on the ballot paper.

Havanananana · 19/05/2025 15:15

Viviennemary · 19/05/2025 14:13

I just object to being governed by EU laws and the fact they could overturn decisions made in our courts. I don't want that.

The UK was very active in drawing up EU laws when the country was a member - and no EU laws were ever enacted in the UK without first having been approved by the UK Parliament.

The ECHR (which is the court that Brexiters seem most concerned about) has nothing to do with the EU. It is a body under the Council of Europe, which has 46 member countries (including the 27 EU countries).

Clavinova · 19/05/2025 15:16

SpiritAdder · 19/05/2025 15:00

You’re really confused.

The only European Court that applied (and still applies to the UK) is the ECHR (European Court of Human Rights) which predates the EU, has nothing to do with EU membership and isn’t ‘EU law’- it’s human rights that all European countries have agreed on by charter and European judges, including British ones, pass down the decisions.

Other than that, there are basic laws that come with trade agreements and security cooperation agreements.

You are the one who is confused, not the previous poster - European Court of Justice;

Landmarks in law: the 90s fishing case that stoked UK Euroscepticism

Before Factortame, some UK politicians hadn’t fully grasped the power of EU law over parliament

But not non tariff free trade with the EU

That's what Starmer is trying to improve, incredible so many want to harm our ability to export and grow our economy.

LakieLady · 19/05/2025 15:17

PhilippaGeorgiou · 19/05/2025 14:50

I think particularly committed Leavers should not be travelling to Europe, spending money in the European economy and depriving our ailing hospitality sector the benefit of their £'s. Whilst being drizzled on constantly.

They should also exercise their economic might by boycotting anything produced in EU countries or by EU based companies. No more VWs or Prosecco for them!

Genevieva · 19/05/2025 15:18

This isn’t closer ties with Europe. It shackles without any meaningful benefits. What we are giving is worth far more than what we are receiving. Starmer had messed this up big time.

With all due respect (or at least all the respect this is due), perhaps turning off the tv in a huff rather than really understanding the intricacies of the agreement is the problem? If fewer people had done that around the discussions of Brexit, we might well be in a much better position right now.

Reallybadidea · 19/05/2025 15:19

"Labour needs to sort the economy out"

....trade deals agreed with India, US and EU

"Not like that though"

SwedishEdith · 19/05/2025 15:19

If Brexiters couldn't fucking define what leave meant they don't get to fucking define what post-leaving looks like forever. Your tantrum is nearly 9 years old.

I don't know. We will be required to learn Mandarin at school before we know it thanks to a trade deals with China.

Have you tried meditation ?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 19/05/2025 15:21

I just feel for the fishermen, ooops sorry, I meant fisherfolk. 😀
was this not a big part of Brexit for them, that the waters surrounding this island would not be overfished by the French and suchl like.
Are they not back to square one?

RedToothBrush · 19/05/2025 15:23

I guarantee if we had just two weeks of EU visas and no eGates, we'd have many many Brexiteers screaming how disgraceful it was that they no longer were allowed into the EU due previous convictions.

It'd be hilarious.

FleurdeLion · 19/05/2025 15:24

Viviennemary · 19/05/2025 14:19

You can ask as often as you like. I do not want to live under EU law.

Except we still have to comply with EU regulations even if we’re no longer part of the EU. If we export goods to them (cars, washing machines, cheese etc), they must comply. And those goods are now subject to expensive checks because we might not be complying. Which is costing us £4bn a year.

At least when we were in the EU we had a say in those laws. And most of the EU CE standards were adopted from the BSI kitemark.

We were right at the heart of law-making and other countries had to comply with laws that we agreed with, agreed to and actually wrote.

Tell us how the UK had the upper hand and was in a position to negotiate more favourable terms in your view.

No because the agreement is an extension of the existing agreement.
