To absolutely not want closer ties to Europe

What is the matter with Stammer toadying up to the EU. We voted Out. Has he forgotten. I switched the TV off when I heard the word contribution and free movement. Here we go again. Shafted and ripped off at every turn and following their dumb rules. It's groundhog day. I'm furious.

Brexit tanked the economy and made us poorer. However I didn't factor in the fish, silly me.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/05/2025 23:06

@Iceboy80 you seem to have mistaken mumsnet for X - except forgot to add a few flags -

Crikeyalmighty · 20/05/2025 23:09

@Donsyb- lol!! No shit Sherlock

Think you're on the wrong site to be airing this OP. I'm absolutely agreeing with you but, you won't get any support on here. The country is sleepwalking into a nightmare

I'll take your point about HK.

But Europe did fair much better than the UK in terms of Covid.

Genuine question to all those on here. What would convince you that those who voted Brexit and may well still be in favour of it, might actually have thought, deliberated and made an informed decision that they thought best for their country

I genuinely believe that some people did have the best interests of the U.K. at heart when they voted, but the majority voted more on emotion and headlines regarding immigration etc. people unfortunately followed the rubbish spouted about immigrants taking their jobs. However, so many lazy, entitled Brits don’t actually want the jobs. Look at the mess we were in when cheap labour disappeared, we had veg rotting in the fields, despite farmers offering upwards of £20 per hour for people to pick them.

I just object to being governed by EU laws and the fact they could overturn decisions made in our courts. I don't want that.

Respectfully, I feel reading some actual info and not the Daily Mail/Telegraph might make you reassess this position.

As it’s bollocks

In what way?

Please explain your viewpoint with actual examples as I’m interested in understanding it

This is an absolute scandel and he need to be outed NOW! This is a massive betrayal but did we expect anything less, let's be honest! You OWN children are struggling for work and he is allowing 18 to 30 year old to enter freely, MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!

Those who voted Liebour are the problems, honestly, you'd have to have issues to have voted for them.

The sooner Reform UK is in the maybe we will have a country that puts the UK first FOR ONCE!

Thank you for so succinctly pointing out the benefits of a robust and well funded education system

The old leftie argument. You're too thick to agree with us. Sorry I voted Labour last time. I won't again.

Oh bless you are still trying.

OK let's start with your first point. Budgetary, foreign and security matters weren't dealt with through QMV. So NGL my instinct is to assume you've just gone and read something else you don't understand but I'm looking forward to you proving me wrong with some original thoughts rather than just quoting something else you don't understand.

Your second quote literally demonstrates the exact point I was making so maybe you again don't understand.

Your third quote, I am not going to lie I have no idea what it is supposed to demonstrate on the subject of whether the UK had the ability to influence UK legislation but I am certainly looking forward to your explanation.

I think I love you @mutinyonthetwix❤️

What does ‘putting the UK first’ look like to you? Just curious.

I will definitely be peed off if we end up accepting their ruling again, we all knew things were going to be worse before they can be better. Our parents were never given the choice to become a part of the EU, it was forced on them. Originally, we were supposed to just be a common market with Europe, not be ruled by a European dictatorship. Yes, we are technically a part of Europe, but we are our own sovereignty and should NEVER have given away our rights to outside leaders!

Brexit should never have happened. The country is falling apart

I was never aware that we were ruled by anyone else, everything was OK. It hasn't been OK since we left the EU. What do our parents have to do with it?

Starmer is trying to negotiate our way back because the GBP is asking him to. Don't forget, Brexit was only successful by a very small margin, many people not voting because they thought it was a given that we would stay. Since then, so many Brexiteers have changed their minds.

It's not going to be easy to re-enter but I for one hope it will happen.

You can ask as often as you like. I do not want to live under EU law.

How old are you Op? Do you care for economy and jobs for young people?

Bit like what Westminster does to Scotland and Wales?

beautifuldaytosavelives · 20/05/2025 23:52

I’d suggest most strongly that those relieved that ‘they’ no longer have control of ‘our’ laws take a quick skim through the Parliamentary law making chapter and then the EU Law chapter of any accessible GCSE Law textbook (can’t recommend a lower level, sorry) and get a basic grip of the facts. You’ll probably have time while you’re waiting for an appointment in the understaffed NHS now our European brethren are no longer welcome.

But you know, blue passport ‘n all.

Lockdownsceptic · 19/05/2025 14:55

Starmer and others like him never accepted the Brexit vote. They don’t really believe in democracy. In their minds we are not bright enough to decide for ourselves, we have to be told what is best for us.

He is right about brexiters not being bright enough.

HangryLikeTheHulk · 21/05/2025 00:15

Such a weird point of view to frame our relationship with the EU back when we were members as “them” and “us”.

There was only “us” as we were a member, same as all the other members.

If you join a club you become part of the club, you become a “we”.

And that is exactly why you get nowhere with your arguments. Argue on the issues by all means but dismissing 17.4 million people as stupid is not wise or true. Just because you don't agree with us doesn't make us stupid. And it is counter productive. If you call someone stupid they are very unlikely to ever come round to your way of thinking. Look at America. The democrats made a big issue of Republicans being ignorant and look how that turned out.
If only remainers would accept that there were valid reasons for voting either way we might have more productive discussions about the way forward.

Trendyname · 21/05/2025 00:51

caringcarer · 20/05/2025 21:37

Yes this, and the fishermen being screwed over again. Housing is dire in UK. Where are all of thes Europeans under 35 going to be living? In houses we need to home our own young people and families. They are the ones who will miss out.

But you still have foreigners working in service industry. Difference is they come from outside EU.

But any democratic vote happens every few years. First, the said referendum was advisory, secondly there was a high % of elderly voters. 9 years later, perhaps it's a good idea to revisit that decision. Has it really help, and do people still want to be out of EU. Why are Brexiters so insecure? Are they exceptionally rich that they are insular to decades of economic decline in the country?
Are you a wealthu landlord or trader by any chance?

If you’re prepared to vote against the interests of you and your loved ones just because a stranger online calls you stupid, doesn’t that make you kind of stupid? Or am I missing something?

GrannyHelen1 · 21/05/2025 04:08

So who do you propose we do business with? Trump? Hahahahaha, yeah, good luck with that....he's cheated and betrayed allies and partners at every turn. I wouldn't trust him for the time of day. We are a small, weak nation, and we have surely discovered already the financial consequences of trying to go it alone.
