To absolutely not want closer ties to Europe

What is the matter with Stammer toadying up to the EU. We voted Out. Has he forgotten. I switched the TV off when I heard the word contribution and free movement. Here we go again. Shafted and ripped off at every turn and following their dumb rules. It's groundhog day. I'm furious.

We give Europe our fish and lots of money. What did they give us. Absolutely nothing except a headache.

If you can't engage with any of the responses or facts, what's the point of posting? You just keep saying the same simplistic things over and over with seemingly no ability to absorb anything or flesh out your positions. It's almost like you're either (dare I say it) not very smart or just trying to be goady.

Once we stopped paying the membership fee of £8bn per year, our GDP dropped between £100bn and £140bn.

Its quite simple. The membership fee was worth it 15 times over for what we got back.

I’m embarrassed for you, your lack of knowledge is astounding!

"The Spectator", are you honestly referencing this publication to support your argument that Erasmus will only benefit the "spoilt bastards", with a straight face? The publication whose Commentariat are the very epitome of the wealthy, privileged and elite, including James Delingpole who in the past wrote about Oxford University's academic standards falling due to an influx of working class students creating a “PC monoculture”!

I'm sorry but referring to The Spectator to support any argument against the wealthy elites is just pure comedy😂

And yet, this was the main conclusion of the article.

Hwi · 20/05/2025 15:07

Goldenbear · 20/05/2025 14:36

Goodness, labels are really important to you aren't they!

Parents support their children, not exactly a shocker is it!

You started the comparison, not me.

LlynTegid · 20/05/2025 15:09

I would have preferred a customs union, which I think if what it means was explained in detail, most people would support. However, Labour did make it clear last year it was not on the table.

A whole laundry list of business organisations disagrees with you. Business was hard hit by your precious Brexit. Especially small businesses. Don't you want success for small British companies?

An article in a right wing pro Brexit publication, supported by some of the wealthiest in the UK. How unbiased must they be!

Agrumpyknitter · 20/05/2025 12:26

Wow so you would vote against your own interests I.e having a free at point of access health service, DEI which aims for equal pay and access to jobs for WOMEN and at least a government that protects workers rights.

Reform don’t believe in the above, Farage always votes against bills that support workers rights and wants to do away with our NHS. Not to mention he fiddled his expenses when he was a MEP. He hasn’t held many constituents meetings because he is too busy earning money for his second job.

When we left the EU most of the laws we adhered to became UK law. We need the EU as a trading partner. And the EU have higher standards for food production and farming. Don’t forget Reform would have you eat ammonia chicken from the US. I voted for Brexit but we need this deal.

The EU's long-distance trade in farm animals exposed,' animals often experience significant suffering during long journeys, where they are overcrowded in overloaded trucks, experiencing exhaustion, dehydration, and a progressive increase in stress as the journey is prolonged.....

If a pro-Brexit right wing article happens to be correct with the facts, what, should I just dismiss the truth because it happens to be published in a pro-Brexit right wing article?

In addition to the article, I have real life experience, fortunately or unfortunately.

Exactly!

Who knew The Spectator was now championing the interests of the underprivileged or are they just enjoying their journalistic authority without worrying about the constraints of fairness, objectivity, and responsibility.

That's an erudite argument supported by plenty of facts. Well done, you.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/05/2025 16:25

@Hwi in that case I expect you to be totally championing accurate features in the Mirror and the Guardian and Private Eye

And in exchange we sold the fish we British do not like and we were able to get it to them quickly. We could enter a country without queuing for hours and perhaps for some most importantly illegal migrants could be returned to their point on entry to Europe often Italy or entry to the UK -often France.

Europe set out how we supported our farmers and how we should keep our rivers clean. It was not perfect but so much better than now.

Mugsey62 · 20/05/2025 16:49

The Spectator? No bias there then.

@Hwi, having read some of your contributions to other threads over the last while, it’s very clear that wherever your ‘real life experience’ comes from, it’s not the same planet the rest of us inhabit.

Islandgirl68 · 20/05/2025 17:27

@Viviennemary that is not true, we actually got a lot of money back, lots of rural and deprived areas got euro money. And we got a huge rebate.

Holdonforsummer · 20/05/2025 17:28

Yes cos Brexit was working out so WELL for us all!!!

Grantanow · 20/05/2025 17:34

There were no benefits from Brexit and a whole load of barriers to trade for small businesses, students' study in Europe, no chance to work abroad, etc. No need to listen to the ravings of a Tory party that failed for 14 years or the ignorant comments about fishing given that Starmer has open the EU markets to UK fish and shellfish sales.

Yes Reform will be cheering at today's news. I will vote Reform if only to keep us out of Europe's clutches. They bullied us long enough.

And Reform are nothing like bullies, no?
