To absolutely not want closer ties to Europe

What is the matter with Stammer toadying up to the EU. We voted Out. Has he forgotten. I switched the TV off when I heard the word contribution and free movement. Here we go again. Shafted and ripped off at every turn and following their dumb rules. It's groundhog day. I'm furious.

The old leftie argument. You're too thick to agree with us. Sorry I voted Labour last time. I won't again.

What was your main reason for voting Labour?

Did you think they were a right wing party? (You're not far off if you did)

FumingTRex · 19/05/2025 17:40

Viviennemary · 19/05/2025 14:13

I just object to being governed by EU laws and the fact they could overturn decisions made in our courts. I don't want that.

I think you are talking about the European Convention on Human Rights which isn’t part of the EU? We never left that. So its nothing to do with today’s announcement.

Notellinganyone · 19/05/2025 17:40

The stupidity of some members of the Great British Public never ceases to astound me.

MoominMai · 19/05/2025 17:41

@Viviennemary as the person who made such a passionate post, it’s disappointing that yet again another person outraged at the possibility of closer ties with Europe and pointing out Reform as the best solution for the country, bails so quickly out of their own thread. These types are always unable to respond to challenges or offer actual detail in their replies. A few vague statements and then off they pop! 🙋🏻‍♀️

You just need to grow up. A mature attitude to the UK's problems will help you to see what's needed.

This thread is hysterical. Op so if you don’t want us to cut deals with Europe who do you want us to do deals with?USA? 🤣

Kelticgold · 19/05/2025 17:43

Starmer signed a trade deal with India the other day, it doesn’t mean we are governed by them.

To be fair, it's probably clocking off time in Moscow by now - they are a couple of hours ahead.

Which rule pisses you off?

what pisses me the most off about the EU is when Angela Merkl decided BY HERSELF to open the borders of all the countries in The EU in 2015 and thereby opening a can of worms as can be seen now. There was a study done by a university in North Germany I think showing that most of the leaders that supported her and went along with that decision were not happy about it. I read that report and have been trying to find it since but I think it was taken down.
I don't like the way that ONE PERSON can seemingly make huge decisions that affect us all. The countris In Europe are all different and have different cultures and different histories that influence their cutlures,

Look up on youtube the 'election' of Martin Selmayer to one of the top jobs in the EU. His job was not even posted, he was just 'chosen' and was responsible for making some decisions affecting the whole of Europe. These kind of goings on are very important but most people don't know about them.

The consequences of Brexit have been predictably damaging, and significant numbers of those who voted for it did so on poor or misleading information, and have realised that a UK nirvana hasn’t ensued. The same referendum today would get a different result.

It wouldn’t. I’d still want to stay out 😊

Catsandcheese · 19/05/2025 17:48

I am delighted to be honest. It’s great news and finally the adults are back in charge. I’m struggling to understand all this nonsense about reversing brexit. This is a trade deal, which will benefit the UK.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/05/2025 17:48

@Viviennemary you seem to be operating on the same wave length as a particularly misinformed relative of mine who works on the ‘I don’t know the facts, but I know what I feel’ modus operandi - her best one was busily telling me about all the Romanian and Polish immigrants coming in and jumping out backs of Lorries in Kent in about 2018 - couldn’t quite get the point that why would they do that when they could pop over to Luton airport on wizz air. We lived in Copenhagen for a few years and the Danes have loads of laws that are specific to Denmark and the same was always true in the UK - which exact laws is it we had that are EU specific that you don’t want ? Because personally I can think of plenty of laws at the moment relating to beaches/water quality and various other ‘standards’ that we did have and no longer have that I think the UK could benefit from .

But most of the EU laws were actually written by British lawyers… (and yes, I do know some of them)

OP can’t wait to get her hands on chlorinated chicken and beef with growth hormones added. 😋 yum

Jane958 · 19/05/2025 17:52

To be perfectly honest, I do not think that most people under about 50 really understand anything about the EU, or Common Market as it was initially, when the UK joined.
Yes, members do align their sovereign laws with the standards agreed by the majority of members. Yes, EU citizens are able to travel and work within the EU without the red tape that used to exist.
Unfortunately, and I do not know who was pulling his strings, David Cameron made a very poor decision of judgement to hold a referendum, which has resulted in the UK being "out on a limb" both economically and culturally.
The UK will never be allowed to return, but, perhaps like Switzerland, it might be able to "make peace" by the current moves?
I am definitely not a Labour supporter and am disenfranchised in the UK anyway, because I have lived in Europe too long, although was just able to take advantage of becoming a dual national - this could also be problematic at some point.
It is the duty of any government to "try" to do its best for the interests of the nation as a whole. I, personally, do not understand why David Cameron thought it was a good idea and I would love to know who voted against (apart from most of my family, which really surprised me and caused a very free and frank exchange of views with my father, where he actually backed down...).
I believe the UK was sold down the river. I mean where are these elusive 350 million for the NHS?
Why not let Starmer try and regain some small advantages? But then, he is no Maggie :-)

Crikeyalmighty · 19/05/2025 17:52

@Catsandcheese I know - it’s strange isn’t it - the Toryswere bigging up every deal with a one man and his dog island - but strangely don’t seem so positive on any kind of trade deal involving the EU - funny that and quite pathetic

Sabire9 · 19/05/2025 17:52

We voted to leave the EU.

We have left the EU.

Stop whining - you got what you wanted, and the rest of us all had to pay for it.

StMarie4me · 19/05/2025 17:52

People based their vote on racism and lies. Presume that was you, OP?

What does any of that have to do with today's trade deals?

We still aren't in the EU. Those things don't apply to us. Making a trade deals does not make them apply.

Ah, yes. The elevated discourse of passive-aggressive emojis, all caps, italics and the ability to disregard the existence of facts because you either don't like or don't understand them. You are doing the leavers proud.

If you read back through the history, you'll see the emojis and vitriol started with the remain comments.

Frenchbluesea · 19/05/2025 17:57

Quite frankly, if you do not want closer ties with Europe after seeing the economic consequences of Brexit and the threat of war looming then you’re a bit of an idiot.

Clavinova · 19/05/2025 17:58

MrsBennetsPoorNerves
I can't imagine why people would not do at least some basic research into what they're actually voting for

To be fair, there are plenty of remainers who say they didn't realise we would be leaving the single market in the event of a leave vote - when Cameron, Gove, and Johnson all confirmed that we would in April/May/early June 2016. Farage stated his desire to leave the single market as early as November 2015. There's even a Mumsnet webchat with Andrea Leadsom pre-referendum where she confirms the intention to leave the single market.

Nah, it will be the wrong colour on the passport thing.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/05/2025 18:00

It’s going to end up being the Hokey Cokey with Starmer putting the left leg in and Farage taking the left leg out. We are already a bloody laughing stock globally. Just make a bloody decision and stick with it.

NavyWriter · 19/05/2025 18:04

The EU are not daft, the freedom of moment is always a UK concession.. - Something the EU push for.

They get to offload hundreds of thousands of poor people from Eastern & Central Europe onto us and in return a handful of Brits get to work in the EU handing out "free shots" leaflets in Magaluf.
