To absolutely not want closer ties to Europe

What is the matter with Stammer toadying up to the EU. We voted Out. Has he forgotten. I switched the TV off when I heard the word contribution and free movement. Here we go again. Shafted and ripped off at every turn and following their dumb rules. It's groundhog day. I'm furious.

We voted out 9 years ago. No vote has to be for all time. Polls show most people think it was a bad idea, and indeed you only have to look at the economy and what is going on in America to see that that is correct. Time for a rethink.

Sadcafe · 19/05/2025 14:27

The infuriating bit is we had a referendum to decide if we wanted to stay or leave, regardless of personal views on the outcome, the vote was to leave, apparently it is perfectly acceptable though for the government to decide to move towards rejoining without asking the people, maybe call another election if Labour is so certain this is what people want

It's not rejoining unfortunately

Even if it turns out that those democratically expressed wishes have done monumental damage to the country?

No one is allowed to try and repair any of that damage? Ever?

Even then some people don't actually understand what 'democratically expressed wishes' actually means. You're supposed to still govern for the large minority. Nobody really wanted to end freedom of movement for UK citizens or make it more difficult to go on holiday, they wanted to stop it for anyone from outside the UK coming here. Why they're pretending otherwise now I don't know. But it's the Brexiteer way. Don't back down, double down.

What do you know about international trade?

The democratic changing minds, not allowed for some reason.

I doubt that anyone who articulates themselves by saying "dumb rules" has the first clue about anything very much, let alone the EU.

Haha. I was just about to post almost the exact same thing. You know when you read a political post that starts off with 'dumb rules' you're in for some searing and incisive discourse.

That's the price we pay for democracy!

Shall we just stop having elections, then? We voted in the Whigs a couple of hundred years ago, by your logic we should never have been allowed to change our minds about that because...democracy?

ScrambledSmegs · 19/05/2025 16:08

We’re in a pre-war phase. A new world war is looking more and more likely in the coming years. There’s an extremely high probability that Russia will not be on our side, and we definitely won’t be able to look for help from the USA.

But by all means OP, isolate our tiny island with underfunded defence forces from our most likely allies.

I just object to being governed by EU laws and the fact they could overturn decisions made in our courts. I don't want that.

You never were, and they couldn't. Next.

I think she's suggesting that the elected government abides by the democratically expressed wishes of the people.

Great. She'll be really happy then that Labour has fulfilled its manifesto pledges on this one.

Turnups · 19/05/2025 16:08

Yes, we (well, you) voted to leave, so we left. And now we can all see that the wonderful future and sunlit uplands we were promised if we left were mirages, in some cases deliberately misleading. So we're taking pragmatic steps to regain at least some of the advantages we lost.

Sounds good to me. As J M Keynes said, "When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do?" (And of course many things Leavers told us weren’t really facts in the first place.)

The referendum is the one and only democratic vote that is not affected by the passage of time.

We've had the May government, the Johnson government, the Sunak government and the Starmer# since the referendum all of which made various decisions which changed previous democratically agreed policies. This is allowed, but we aren't allowed any flexibility on a policies relating to Brexit (which were not even agreed democratically - we only voted yes or no - we didn't vote for what yes or no might look like).

The Referendum is this magic 'democratic mandate' with no expiry and no actual definition which we must obey despite Brexit not having any shape.

#probably best we just ignore the Truss government isn't it?

They need to paint St Georges crosses on the fish, so we know which is our fish, what them there french is pinching. I mean, we done it all over the world with ambulances.

Old frog face will never be PM! We will all see how truly useless Reform are in running the councils! Ffs they’ve put a 19 year old in charge of children’s services!

And those of us who voted to remain and haven't changed our minds of course have every right to continue to wish, dream or campaign for a return!

It's bizarre, isn't it? A political monolith, as unchangeable and unknowable as the Sphinx.

Well said.

Of the 42 EU fisheries committee meetings that took place, the lying, conning shyster turned up for 1 on them.

It depresses me how many people have fallen for Farage. People who he would cross the road to avoid on any given day.

You mean if Farage had turned up we could have had a deal on fisheries that looked like our current deal?

Surely not.

#FakeNews I have been to a dozen different beaches in the UK in the past 3-4 years (In Wales, Scotland, and England,) and there has been NOTHING like what is described in that 'news article.' Not a thing.

Utter nonsense all of it.
