I'm shocked and appalled!! He (M41)says he doesn't want her (DD12) learning about people who marry there daughters off at 9 years old and all their women are oppressed and forced to cover up and do as their told!

I feel like he's taring all Muslims with the same brush and it's good to learn about other religions and see other places of worship!

I'm so mad!! I honestly don't think I can stay with someone who has these opinions!!

Of the 10 countries with the highest child marraige rates, Islam is the most common religion in 6 of them, Christianity in 3 of them and Hinduism in 1 of them.

All of the resources I can find suggest it's an issue accross faiths, and that poverty is by far and away the factor most associated with the practice of child marraige.

And even in developed countries, and while it's prevelance seems to vary by church, I don't think Christians can get too high and mighty about child abuse.

This is not necessarily a religious issue so much as a cultural one in some parts of the world, especially underdeveloped countries.

And look at some of the Christian cults in the USA who were making young girls marry their leaders, the Sugars where the girls were basically household maids and nannies, with restrict on clothes, privacy, significant corporal punishment, segregation from the outside world etc.

I don't think what a high level of unconscious bias you are viewing this through.

scorpiogirly · 15/05/2025 16:43

It's not a religion. I suggest you go away and do your research, then come back and see if you still feel the same.

You don't think Islam is a religion?

Btw. This shouldn’t be a competition over which religion fosters the worst behaviour.

We just need to be able to talk about the bad behaviour without being accused of being racist or Islamophobic so we can be clear in the lines of acceptable behaviour.

A lot of assumptions are being made on this thread about what Muslims in general think. It would be really good if there was an environment where we could talk and find out their opinions on the treatment of women by their religion, especially in certain countries and whether they plan to do anything about it.

It often seems like Christian/British/white people are constantly being held to account even for the sins of our forefathers and certainly for the sins of our church leaders - is this just a one way street?

People upping the ante by constantly screaming “racist” at us is not conducive.

This is bullshit.

Finding common ground?

Understanding better how to combat Islamic extremism together

Better social understanding and cohesion?

Is that not something we should be striving for? Reading the comments against OPs DH, they are certainly not going to make any progress with that level of nastiness.

How would it be good for social cohesion? It comes across as a criticism of their religion which isn't likely to be very welcome.

I hope these talks are going to include all faiths and cultures as otherwise it comes across as singling people out.

You don't think Islam is a religion?

No. It's a political ideology.

The Qur'an is a political text?

scorpiogirly · 15/05/2025 20:49

The Muslim religion follows the Quran. Islam is different kettle of fish.

Panterusblackish · 15/05/2025 20:51

Well to be honest in the Batley area in West Yorkshire one of the primary schools organised a trip to a both mosque and a church for the pupils to promote understanding of other faiths.

The trip to the mosque was first. All went well and the children were told lots about Islam.

The subsequent trip to the church did not happen because the parents of the Muslim children refused point blank to allow their children to enter the church.

It certainly taught the other parents and children something about Islam but perhaps not quite what was intended.

I doubt they'll be many Mumsnetters saying those parents are a disgrace and racist for their narrow minded stance and views on Christianity though.

Islam is the name of the religion. A follower is called a Muslim.

scorpiogirly · 15/05/2025 20:54

It's the same at my daughter's school. They had an Eid party where children were invited to come into to school wearing sparkly party clothes. Yet I notice at the school Christmas play, the Muslim children are absent and not taking part.

Well technically. I don't know where in the Quran though that it states women should be covered at all times to the eye balls. It's essentially been hijacked by misogynistic men.

There is a lot of interplay between all world religions and politics. They are still religions.

How people practice their religion is of course influenced by their culture. E.g. in some Catholic countries women wear a veil to mass but that is very rare here.
Some Muslim women cover their heads, some do not, some follow varying degrees of modest dress.
Some Christian groups follow certain dress codes (the craziness of the evangelical trad wife movement), whereas in my local churches people will wear jeans and jumper.
This does not mean they are not religions.

Well that's even worse then! Unless they're telling men to do the same it's utterly disgusting.

Some world leaders think women can have a penis so I'd be better off having a conversation with a block of lard.

StupidBoy · 14/05/2025 20:26

I'd be interested to know from teachers how many of their Muslim pupils are barred from going into churches or sikh temples or other places of worship by their parents.

I've worked in schools for over a decade and never had Muslim, Sikh or Hindu parents refuse permission for their child to take part in a Church visit. Sadly, have had a few racist twats like OP's DH kick off about trips to the Gurdwara or Mosque over the years, but not many.

OP, I can tell you from experience that kids who hear this ignorant crap being spouted at home often repeat it in school! You need to tell your DD point blank that her Dad is wrong on this and make sure she goes on this trip.

I often wonder how people marry people without knowing what they are like. I would feel like my vetting proceeds was useless if I accidentally married a bigot.

Ignore your husband, send your daughter on the trip.

(This reminds me of a mate of mine who is always whining about how racist and homophobic is ex wife is and how he does not want her passing her views to their kids. I always tell him “well you chose to marry her and have kids with her.”)
