Receptionist at gym making snarky comment wwyd

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 15:42

I’ve been with this gym a month or so. Premium (supposedly but I’m not sure it’s actually worth the money) and I was just leaving after my work out and said “bye” as I walked past and just as I was going out the door the receptionist said pretty loudly “thank you - you’re welcome” as if I was being rude not saying thank you! Am I supposed to say thanks to the receptionist? I said bye but I didn’t realise I was supposed to say thank you to an employee for using something I pay for! AIBU? It’s put me off going a bit and I’m not sure if I should say something or just leave it
edited it to say there was no one coming in or going out after me so she couldn’t have been talking to someone else!

It was probably auto-pilot from her! A lot of people probably do say thank you and I doubt she’s paying much attention. I’d give the benefit of the doubt here.

Itiswhysofew · 13/05/2025 15:45

Are you positive she was being sarcastic? Perhaps that's how she always responds to customers and it's genuine.

Annascaul · 13/05/2025 15:51

She said ‘thank you and you’re welcome’ when you’d finished using the facility - where’s the problem here?
Part of her job description is to greet customers??

purplecorkheart · 13/05/2025 15:54

I think you are misreading the situation. She wasn't making a point about you not saying thank you. She was saying thank you-your welcome. She is probably told this is the way she is to greet clients when they are leaving and says it on auto-pilot. She probably sounds gruff as she says it multiple times a day.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/05/2025 15:55

They probably just heard what they thought was a polite goodbye type greeting. Most people probably do say bye, thanks, or both. So it was just a default response. I wouldn't assume it was rude.

And even if it was I would have better things to think about frankly.

If you see them again I'm sure they'll be fine.

ilovesooty · 13/05/2025 15:56

Probably an automatic response. Not worth over thinking it.

SunnySideDeepDown · 13/05/2025 15:59

I’d mirror her rudeness.

Next time she’s working and you’re leaving, walk past and say “thank you - you’re welcome” to her.

She should be working, not worrying about who’s said thanks. In any case, she should be thanking YOU for using the facilities!

Automatic response to a customer leaving the premises? How strange!

MounjaroMounjaro · 13/05/2025 16:00

It depends how she said it, surely? Edited to add - is there anyway it could be taken as an automatic response or was her tone really sarcastic? I know you understood it to be snarky, but do you think now that it really was?

andtheworldrollson · 13/05/2025 16:01

Perhaps she was responding to you bye because most people ignore her?

FranticHare · 13/05/2025 16:01

Doesn't sound particularly awful...

The receptionists at my gym often say thank you to people leaving. Not strange at all.

untilido · 13/05/2025 16:02

This is the weirdest overthink I have seen so far on here.

I think OP means sarcastic tone, e.g. if you let a door bang in someone’s face ‘THANK YOU! You’re welcome’!

Inference being OP should have been more effusive in her thank you & good bye.

Hereforthedramaz · 13/05/2025 16:06

Everyone says thank you as they leave my gym too, a bit like you say thank you as you leave a bus and certain types of shop if a member of staff is nearby.

So I’d assume it’s an auto pilot response I would leap straight to rudeness!

I’ve certainly answered hellos on auto pilot assuming they asked how I was etc

NerrSnerr · 13/05/2025 16:07

I go to David Lloyd and visit quite a few different ones and all the receptionists say this or something very similar, they’re clearly told to. I suspect she wasn’t being sarcastic.

Depends entirely on tone I’d say. Possibly having a bad day if snark & best ignored either way.

Golidlocksandthethreeswears · 13/05/2025 16:15

Somewhere, there is a gym receptionist cringing herself inside out at having said "you're welcome!" to someone leaving the gym who didn't even say thank you.

You're over thinking here OP

It's like a waiter saying "enjoy your meal" and you responding on autopilot "thanks, you too!" (Or is that just me 😳)

JandamiHash · 13/05/2025 16:17

Did she say it in a snarky tone?? I’ve been known to say “You too” when waiters tell me to enjoy my meal and such like, because I’m a plonker. Just wondering if she meant to say something else.

Cross post! I’m pleased it’s not just me 😂

But it was followed up with “you’re welcome” so she was clearly being sarcastic no?

A lot of receptionists are insecure about their jobs and think people are looking down on them so are generally rude…..it’s in her, she has a very basic job and can’t even do that properly / professionally…..say hello/ goodbye and otherwise ignore her, the business does not belong to her and there is no need to say thank you …especially when she seems to be demanding it

Same. They’re told to. As in “thanks for coming “. But they just say thanks, bye. I bet lots of people say thanks back out of politeness and then she says you’re welcome and in your case she got ahead of herself/muddled. She’s probably currently cringing if she realised.
