Receptionist at gym making snarky comment wwyd

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 15:42

I’ve been with this gym a month or so. Premium (supposedly but I’m not sure it’s actually worth the money) and I was just leaving after my work out and said “bye” as I walked past and just as I was going out the door the receptionist said pretty loudly “thank you - you’re welcome” as if I was being rude not saying thank you! Am I supposed to say thanks to the receptionist? I said bye but I didn’t realise I was supposed to say thank you to an employee for using something I pay for! AIBU? It’s put me off going a bit and I’m not sure if I should say something or just leave it
edited it to say there was no one coming in or going out after me so she couldn’t have been talking to someone else!

I doubt it and anyone advocating it is just plain nasty.

No they are not, no business wants or needs a cheeky / sarky unprofessional receptionist who is possibly doing harm to the reputation of the business

WomenInSTEM · 13/05/2025 17:10

I also think she just said it on autopilot.

Please don't complain about her.

You’re right, they don’t.
This situation was nothing like that, though.

I get that but I don’t see how I’ve done the company a favour by coming to the gym either. 😀. I feel they’ve done me more of a favour by providing the facilities. Gyms like people who don’t come but pay their membership regardless. Surely people like me who turn up 6x a week are a pita! 😁

But you chose that gym. It could be a ‘ thanks for choosing us’ or ‘thanks for your custom’.

arcticpandas · 13/05/2025 17:19

@Mydietstartstomorrow You were the one who heard it so you know if it was sarcastic or not. I would tell the manager "Sorry if I missed the memo that you're not supposed to say 'bye bye" when leaving but also "thank you" and explain the situation. I always say "bye" to the receoptionists at the gym. Sometimes add "have a good evening" if it's one of the friendlier ones. They sometimes say " thank you bye bye".

But it was followed up with “you’re welcome” so she was clearly being sarcastic no?

No

notprincehamlet · 13/05/2025 17:26

Dear god make it stop

Lavenderfarmcottage · 13/05/2025 17:29

As you have gone to trouble of posting about this, I choose to give OP benefit of the doubt that receptionist was being sarcastic.

Possible she interpreted your bye and way as a sort of ‘thankyou’ and that’s why she said ‘you’re welcome’.

If she was being snarky then it’s possible she had her period, felt inferior as you look really good, feels inferior because you walked in wearing nice work clothing, thinks you seem aloof based on her own insecurities, saw a man check you out and feels jealous, or just has some weird belief that as the gatekeeper she deserves thanks.

In any case it all stems from her own weirdness so there’s no need to make yourself a weirdo too by getting down and dirty and absorbing this. You can’t go through life absorbing every exchange because if you’re sensitive you’re going to notice 10,000 times more weird things than the average person and that’s just energy zapping.

You need to step back and realise people are generally weird, misunderstood, flawed communicators, inadequate and have all their own stuff.

Get on with your life. You’re at the gym doing great things for yourself, stick to your lane and goals.

greengreyblue · 13/05/2025 17:31

Also you say in your first post that she said it as you went out the door. Did she activate the door for you? Do you think she thought you walked through without thanking? Clutching at straws now.

thedeadneverdie · 13/05/2025 17:32

Seriously! Why let a receptionist in a gym who you see for a fleeting 10 seconds affect your karma?

How old are you?

PrettyPuss · 13/05/2025 17:33

Might she have been distracted when she said it? You were polite to say goodbye. Doesn't seem like she had any reason to be sarcastic but I know some people are.

Don’t stupid. She said ‘you’re welcome’, she didn’t tell her to do one.
I often say thank you without anyone actually doing anything to warrant it. I pretty much always say it to the staff at the self checkout when I leave Tesco and they’ve done no more than stand there more often than not. I also say you’re welcome to people, use thumbs up and full stops at the end of texts. Not one of these are meant to be passive aggressive. The tone I use leaves no doubt when I’m being PA.

AngelicKaty · 13/05/2025 17:33

@Mydietstartstomorrow Yes, of course she was being sarcastic OP - I immediately thought that after reading just your first post before reading any of your others. I wonder if there's a possibility she didn't hear your "bye" and thought you were leaving without saying anything at all? Is that possible? Regardless, I'm surprised she thought this was an appropriate thing for her to do in the paid role of receptionist where a lot of her job would involve being friendly and making customers feel welcome and comfortable.
I'd leave it this time OP, but if she repeats the behaviour I'd quietly ask her if she has a problem. And if she's rude after that, I'd definitely make a complaint to the gym management.

TinyTempest · 13/05/2025 17:33

Could be autopilot.

I work with the public and as they leave they sometimes say "Bye" and I've replied "Thanks, you too" 😬👀

I'm just so used to people saying 'Bye, enjoy the rest of your day" etc.

You have no proof that she was cheeky or sarky. Do you advocate people losing their jobs because of one customer's perception?

Fuckfacetime · 13/05/2025 17:36

I think I wouldn’t have noticed and if I had I wouldn’t think about anything about it.

eithet autopilot or a bad day. Who cares ? Why would you stop going to the gym?

keep going OP. It wasn’t personal

honeylulu · 13/05/2025 17:36

It's probably just an auto response as part of customer service training. I've worked in shops and pubs and we were told to greet customers verbally when they came in and say thank you and goodbye when they left. We were also told there would sometimes be "mystery shoppers" checking that we were responding as trained.

It becomes parrot fashion after a while I don't think i really registered what, if anything, the customer actually said - I just trotted out the prescribed phrases. They might have said fuck you this place is rubbish and I might still have said "thank you, good night" anyway.

Cucy · 13/05/2025 17:39

If you hadn’t said Bye, then I’d be more inclined to say she was being rude but it sounds like she was just replying to you.

When I go into shops on the self scanners, the person manning them always seems to say bye and thank you now.

I think many people are told to say it and so it’s likely she said it ok autopilot.

AthWat · 13/05/2025 17:40

I'm sure that the receptionist sat there doing nothing all day until you walked in. Then she sat there doing nothing but think about you until you left. Then she decided to target you for some sarcastic comments, because, I don't know, she was jealous or something.

Or alternatively she doesn't know who you are, doesn't care what you do, and just said a common polite phrase that came into her head as she was doing her job.

The most important thing is that you make a complaint to the manager, and if that doesn't work, write to the Prime Minister. You won't make yourself look stupid at all, and if you're really lucky, you might get a single mother who just got a job after years of unemployment sacked, for not being nice enough to the wonderful shining example of humanity that is you.

Annascaul · 13/05/2025 17:40

why so rude? Lots of posts on here could be deemed daft. Just move along and don’t waste your time and others by commenting or is it you that just wants to mess with people’s karma!

You’re welcome 😇 I love wasting my time like you!

BTW if you put this in writing in a complaint to the gym stating what you have on here you will definitely be the laughing stick of the entire staff (behind yoor back) but to your face you will be their no 1 client 😂🤣
