Receptionist at gym making snarky comment wwyd

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 15:42

I’ve been with this gym a month or so. Premium (supposedly but I’m not sure it’s actually worth the money) and I was just leaving after my work out and said “bye” as I walked past and just as I was going out the door the receptionist said pretty loudly “thank you - you’re welcome” as if I was being rude not saying thank you! Am I supposed to say thanks to the receptionist? I said bye but I didn’t realise I was supposed to say thank you to an employee for using something I pay for! AIBU? It’s put me off going a bit and I’m not sure if I should say something or just leave it
edited it to say there was no one coming in or going out after me so she couldn’t have been talking to someone else!

I always say hi and bye to the gym receptionists, but I never say thanks. Not sure what I’d be thanking them for.

Maybethisallthereis · 13/05/2025 16:23

She sounds like an arse!
The receptionist at my gym is so rude.. barely acknowledges you!

Mauro711 · 13/05/2025 16:23

It could very well just be an automatic response. I sometimes say things like "Morning!" to my neighbour when I see them and then I realise that was weird because it's 3pm, or if someone wishes me safe travels I'll say saffe travels back even though they aren't going anywhere. It's just one of those standard phrases that we throw out without really even thinking.

Pootles34 · 13/05/2025 16:24

Agree with the others, she will have been on auto pilot. Just one of those things you say and then cringe afterwards - don't worry about it OP!

I’m never sure why they thank me to be honest. I mean I get its thanks for coming but I haven’t done the receptionist a favour by coming. 🤷🏻‍♀️. I haven’t done anything for her. I just put it down to yet another social nicety I don’t understand but go along with.

But it was followed up with “you’re welcome” so she was clearly being sarcastic no?

Did it sound a sarcastic tone? If so maybe you’re right.

Cross post! I’m pleased it’s not just me 😂

Awkward solidarity 🤜🤛

Sherararara · 13/05/2025 16:26

Does this really warrant a post on MN?

Padloque · 13/05/2025 16:27

'You're welcome' doesn't exist purely as a sarcastic response - sometimes it can just mean... you're welcome?

greengreyblue · 13/05/2025 16:27

‘You’re welcome ‘ is polite.

‘You’re welcome ‘ is polite.

The tone is the tell.

A lot of receptionists are insecure about their jobs and think people are looking down on them so are generally rude…..it’s in her, she has a very basic job and can’t even do that properly / professionally…..say hello/ goodbye and otherwise ignore her, the business does not belong to her and there is no need to say thank you …especially when she seems to be demanding it

You sound like you have a very negative view of the world and it explains why receptionists might be rude to you if you think so poorly of them

No. 'You're welcome' is a nice thing to say.

Agree.

greengreyblue · 13/05/2025 16:30

It’s only sarcastic if said ina sarcastic tone after you have failed to say thank you. But you had nothing to say thank you for. You said bye which I guess lots don’t in their way out of the gym. She’s probably on auto pilot. The Brits have a way of saying thank you and sorry to everything. Think how many encounters she has at the desk every day. Now and then the wrong one will come out. I see primary children out at the end of the day and my head is fried with names, instructions given over and over and parents’ faces so I often say one thing when I mean another.🤦🏼‍♀️

Well quite a lot of things on mn don’t but there you go! Did it really warrant you to make a comment? Move along if you don’t want to

Strongly suspect she just said 'You're welcome' without thinking because she's so used to saying it, or was thinking about a different conversation when you spoke to her. Much like someone saying 'Happy birthday' to you and without thinking you say 'Thanks, you too' even though it's not their birthday. Or accidentally putting a kiss at the end of an email to your boss because you're used to doing that in messages to your husband or something.

No, I don’t have a negative view of the world at all, have worked in many companies though and seen it time and time again ( behaviour not directed at myself) where the receptions were very unprofessional / some times shit stirrers and extremely insecure as they knew they were the lowest rung on the ladder within the company

TheSwarm · 13/05/2025 16:40

I absolutely bet she just said it on autopilot and wasn't being sarky.

Even if she was being sarky, then meh, who cares. People are human and to go running to management over little things like that is pretty pathetic.

I used to work as a gym receptionist and our fave game was shouting "bye" at people at the exact point the automatic doors re-shut so they walked into the doors.
