Receptionist at gym making snarky comment wwyd

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 15:42

I’ve been with this gym a month or so. Premium (supposedly but I’m not sure it’s actually worth the money) and I was just leaving after my work out and said “bye” as I walked past and just as I was going out the door the receptionist said pretty loudly “thank you - you’re welcome” as if I was being rude not saying thank you! Am I supposed to say thanks to the receptionist? I said bye but I didn’t realise I was supposed to say thank you to an employee for using something I pay for! AIBU? It’s put me off going a bit and I’m not sure if I should say something or just leave it
edited it to say there was no one coming in or going out after me so she couldn’t have been talking to someone else!

Sounds like have pre judged the receptionist because that’s how you see them.

CamillaMacauley · 13/05/2025 16:25

I’m never sure why they thank me to be honest. I mean I get its thanks for coming but I haven’t done the receptionist a favour by coming. 🤷🏻‍♀️. I haven’t done anything for her. I just put it down to yet another social nicety I don’t understand but go along with.

She is representing the company. That’s part of her role.

NoKnit · 13/05/2025 16:43

You sure English is her first language? Maybe not.
Worth getting upset over? Maybe not.

FastandLoose · 13/05/2025 16:44

Saying 'thank you', fine. Shouting 'you're welcome' after someone who hasn't thanked you is clearly rude. Not sure why everyone is saying otherwise. There's the smallest chance it was just autopilot, but you'll know from the tone and what you say doesn't suggest that. That said, maybe it was just a bad day. Don't let it bother you and be pleasant next time you see her.

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 13/05/2025 16:44

I wouldn’t even have said bye… but I’m in London and everyone just has earbuds in.

Also, my manners are generally very good, but what are you saying thanks for? Did she do your workout for you?

I’d ignore her and carry on as you are

I used to work as a gym receptionist and our fave game was shouting "bye" at people at the exact point the automatic doors re-shut so they walked into the doors.

What a hoot you are.

You’re welcome could well have been said because she thought you said thanks when you said bye.

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 16:18

But it was followed up with “you’re welcome” so she was clearly being sarcastic no?

Perhaps ‘you’re welcome’ is her default line. If people are saying ‘thank you’ then ‘you’re welcome’ might be what she says most of the time.

greengreyblue · 13/05/2025 16:46

Basically op benefit of the doubt is in order here. If she says it every time with a sarcastic tone, you know she’s rude. But I would have forgotten this as soon as I got in my car.

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 16:47

greengreyblue · 13/05/2025 16:40

Which username is you op?

Sorry what? Is this aimed at me or commenter?

OP posts:
greengreyblue · 13/05/2025 16:48

I say thank you to the driver when I get off the bus. I would say ‘bye, thanks !’ to the receptionist if she opened the doors for me for example.

The irony.

The way she is ‘representing’ the company I’m sure her employers would fire her if they knew

greengreyblue · 13/05/2025 16:52

By saying thanks, you’re welcome? What?

spirit20 · 13/05/2025 16:55

SunnySideDeepDown · 13/05/2025 16:00

Automatic response to a customer leaving the premises? How strange!

It's not strange at all. The staff at my gym (a Nuttfield chain) say thanks/bye (or similar) to every customer who walks out the exit barriers. I'm fairly sure they're told to.

I doubt it was rudeness on her part, OP, simply because what on earth would you be thanking her for? She had no impact or input whatsoever in your workout so it'd be a bit strange if she expected her you to thank her.

I'd honestly assume it was an automatic response that she's given so many times, she probably didn't register that it wasn't the logical response to someone saying bye.

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 16:56

It was said in the kind of way I would say it if I held a door open for someone to walk through and they just walked through and ignored me! Just to confirm to some I didn’t say thank you and you’re welcome was her response. She said “thank you you’re welcome” in one quick sentence as I was walking out the door. Maybe autopilot but it didn’t come across like that

No.

Someone2025 · 13/05/2025 16:39

No, I don’t have a negative view of the world at all, have worked in many companies though and seen it time and time again ( behaviour not directed at myself) where the receptions were very unprofessional / some times shit stirrers and extremely insecure as they knew they were the lowest rung on the ladder within the company

Secretaries are often considered to be important as they see all

They certainly aren't the lowest on the ladder

ilovesooty · 13/05/2025 17:04

CamillaMacauley · 13/05/2025 16:21

Same. They’re told to. As in “thanks for coming “. But they just say thanks, bye. I bet lots of people say thanks back out of politeness and then she says you’re welcome and in your case she got ahead of herself/muddled. She’s probably currently cringing if she realised.

That's what I'd have assumed.

greengreyblue · 13/05/2025 16:42

I get that but I don’t see how I’ve done the company a favour by coming to the gym either. 😀. I feel they’ve done me more of a favour by providing the facilities. Gyms like people who don’t come but pay their membership regardless. Surely people like me who turn up 6x a week are a pita! 😁

Sounds even more now like an autopilot or required response

Said quickly because you were leaving before she had chance.

They definitely do not see ‘ALL’ in any of the companies that I have worked in

I doubt it and anyone advocating it is just plain nasty.

queenMab99 · 13/05/2025 17:09

I think the trouble is, so many people are passive aggressive in their response to any interaction, that a perfectly normal phrase has become something that people think is offensive. How would you like her to respond?
