Receptionist at gym making snarky comment wwyd

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 15:42

I’ve been with this gym a month or so. Premium (supposedly but I’m not sure it’s actually worth the money) and I was just leaving after my work out and said “bye” as I walked past and just as I was going out the door the receptionist said pretty loudly “thank you - you’re welcome” as if I was being rude not saying thank you! Am I supposed to say thanks to the receptionist? I said bye but I didn’t realise I was supposed to say thank you to an employee for using something I pay for! AIBU? It’s put me off going a bit and I’m not sure if I should say something or just leave it
edited it to say there was no one coming in or going out after me so she couldn’t have been talking to someone else!

I'm sure that the receptionist sat there doing nothing all day until you walked in. Then she sat there doing nothing but think about you until you left. Then she decided to target you for some sarcastic comments, because, I don't know, she was jealous or something.

Or alternatively she doesn't know who you are, doesn't care what you do, and just said a common polite phrase that came into her head as she was doing her job.

The most important thing is that you make a complaint to the manager, and if that doesn't work, write to the Prime Minister. You won't make yourself look stupid at all, and if you're really lucky, you might get a single mother who just got a job after years of unemployment sacked, for not being nice enough to the wonderful shining example of humanity that is you.

Ah do you feel better now knowing you’ve been completely nasty to a complete stranger on the internet! Give yourself a pat on your back for your wit 🙄

You're right, I should have made a written complaint to her employer and tried to get her sacked. Nothing nasty about that!

thedeadneverdie · 13/05/2025 17:43

You’re welcome 😇 I love wasting my time like you!

BTW if you put this in writing in a complaint to the gym stating what you have on here you will definitely be the laughing stick of the entire staff (behind yoor back) but to your face you will be their no 1 client 😂🤣

I had no intention of putting it in writing but at least I can spell…. 😂

@Mydietstartstomorrow what is your job? Do you work with ftf contact with clients?

Thanks for pointing out my typos though. I appreciate you.

Well done, you’ve just revealed your true self. I think we know who has the bad attitude now and it’s not the receptionist.

657904I · 13/05/2025 17:57

I think you’re being unreasonable as this is something I would put down as a customer facing employee on auto pilot, as opposed to being malicious.

It’s like someone asking you if you are ok and you respond yes and ask them back, and they respond and ask how are you again at the end - forgetting that they already asked.

You said “bye”, she responded “thanks”. It just sounds like a clumsy slip up that she then attempted to correct by saying “you’re welcome”. She probably has had those kinds of exchanges hundreds of times and likely wasn’t personally targeting you with sarcasm or whatever. It was likely she was paying less attention to you as opposed to more.

Somewhere, there is a gym receptionist cringing herself inside out at having said "you're welcome!" to someone leaving the gym who didn't even say thank you.

You're over thinking here OP

It's like a waiter saying "enjoy your meal" and you responding on autopilot "thanks, you too!" (Or is that just me 😳)

This.

I think we can stress over these little things too much. Maybe she meant to be sarcastic, maybe she was on autopilot, maybe she meant to be friendly, but the wrong words came out.

Shake it off. It's trivial.

Could she have been on a video call or on the phone?

Have a very happy life thanks which is why I found it a bit weird and rude 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is your version of a very happy life?

Taking offence at what the vast vast majority of us would see as a banal autopilot platitude

LoafofSellotape · 13/05/2025 18:10

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 16:18

But it was followed up with “you’re welcome” so she was clearly being sarcastic no?

No

Lassango · 13/05/2025 18:12

Without any of us being there we cannot deduce if she was sincere or sarcastic. Give her the benefit of the doubt and see what happens next time.

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 18:05

You insulted me for not being able to spell. For all you know I may have a learning difficulty! This insult could have sent me over the edge. I may take offense. I may ruminate on your insult for days. Ypir insult may send me into a deep depression. I may even feel the need to consult Mumsnet to add meaning and validation to my feelings. Or, I may just concede that I can’t spell and get on with my life and accept the person throwing insults around about my spelling is as inconsequential to me as the point she is trying to make.

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 18:22

I insulted you for being unnecessarily rude asking how old was I. I too may have a learning difficulty where I am overly sensitive to inane comments but you didn’t stop to think about that either

OP posts:
thedeadneverdie · 13/05/2025 18:27

I’m sorry. I only saw the post where you insulted me for not being able to spell.

Thanks for clearing that up.

BTW I am crap at grammar too.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 13/05/2025 18:29

A good way to test it would be to stop, say “pardon, sorry I was in a daydream” and get her to repeat what she said. You will know from how she responds whether she was being snarky or not 😆

I think it was snarky for sure! But you were totally reasonable just to say bye - that’s probably more than she gets from most people..

nomas · 13/05/2025 18:31

YANBU, she was rude. What did she even do for you? Sounds like you left without her having to scan you out?

Next time be prepared to question her. Ignore her completely and if she says anything, ask her what does she want thanking for?

You were rude to OP. At least own it.

thedeadneverdie · 13/05/2025 18:41

@nomas I've said I’m sorry. What more do you want? A red carpet on departure?

You were clearly being sarcastic.

HuffleMyPuffle · 13/05/2025 18:44

Don't resort to storming back, blanking her or dead eye questioning her or you will just come across as batshit and rude and definitely get the snarky replies afterwards

MassiveOvaryaction · 13/05/2025 18:45

You sure she wasn't on the phone? Came across a receptionist at one place who had big curly hair and I totally didn't spot the headset/ear buds. I was about 3 sentences in before I realised she wasn't responding to me but to someone on the other end of the phone Blush
