Receptionist at gym making snarky comment wwyd

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 15:42

I’ve been with this gym a month or so. Premium (supposedly but I’m not sure it’s actually worth the money) and I was just leaving after my work out and said “bye” as I walked past and just as I was going out the door the receptionist said pretty loudly “thank you - you’re welcome” as if I was being rude not saying thank you! Am I supposed to say thanks to the receptionist? I said bye but I didn’t realise I was supposed to say thank you to an employee for using something I pay for! AIBU? It’s put me off going a bit and I’m not sure if I should say something or just leave it
edited it to say there was no one coming in or going out after me so she couldn’t have been talking to someone else!

My MIL is like this

Determined to see the worst
In fact, she actively looks for things to be peeved about

such a downer to be around

But it was followed up with “you’re welcome” so she was clearly being sarcastic no?

You are making up a story to fit your own agenda here which is one of persecution. Are you an overthinker or a people pleaser? We aren't as important in others lives as we are in our own. She may be thinking bloody hell why did I say you're welcome, you've no idea.

Or maybe it’s because she’s surrounded by judgemental unpleasant people….

Might she have been half listening and thought you said 'thanks' as opposed to 'bye'.
Bit of a stretch maybe but it does happen.

You are coming across as so unpleasant on this thread, it’s almost as though it’s a
fake thread.

LimeOrca · 13/05/2025 19:31

I suppose this is the upshot of unhappy in life…. See negative everywhere

Hardly a bit of a stretch. How carefully do you think she listens to what the hundreds of people leaving every day say as they go out?

Mydietstartstomorrow · 13/05/2025 20:10

Thank you to all those that have offered helpful suggestions that it was autopilot or that I’m overthinking it, you’re probably right I do overthink things sometimes when I think people may be thinking bad of me.

and maybe I’ve responded a bit snarky to some commenters but only to the ones that have been nasty, rude and sarcastic and that seems to be an accepted response on here. Sad really. I just don’t think there’s any need to be rude and unpleasant for no reason. Does that make me unhappy in life? I think the opposite. Have a great night everyone 😀

Although given the crux of the OP itself…. It’s not surprising that the OP turned out to be defensive and unpleasant really!

Manxexile · 13/05/2025 20:35

The way I read is that she was saying "thank you" to you because you had bothered to acknowledge her and had said goodbye to her.

I suspect most of the gym patrons simply ignore her when they leave.

You are reading FAR FAR too much into this...

spirit20 · 13/05/2025 16:55

It's not strange at all. The staff at my gym (a Nuttfield chain) say thanks/bye (or similar) to every customer who walks out the exit barriers. I'm fairly sure they're told to.

I doubt it was rudeness on her part, OP, simply because what on earth would you be thanking her for? She had no impact or input whatsoever in your workout so it'd be a bit strange if she expected her you to thank her.

I'd honestly assume it was an automatic response that she's given so many times, she probably didn't register that it wasn't the logical response to someone saying bye.

What, they say “thanks, you’re welcome” to everyone leaving?

Of course they should be thanking customers in their way out. But passive aggressively following it up with “you’re welcome” is ridiculous.

@Roodleyou "... very very much in the minority" of 66% who think OP is NOT being unreasonable? OK then.

Ladyzfactor · 14/05/2025 09:46

CRbear · 13/05/2025 15:45

It was probably auto-pilot from her! A lot of people probably do say thank you and I doubt she’s paying much attention. I’d give the benefit of the doubt here.

This. I have on numerous occasions said "you too" to checkout clerks out of habit because they often say have a good day. I still cringe a bit from the time I said it after she told me my receipt was in the bag.

JennyMaybe · 14/05/2025 10:55

Autopilot can definitely account for people saying odd things. A one off weird response I wouldn’t complain about. I had a client once who told me at her appointment about her husband recently dying and how depressed she was. At the end of the appointment I still said bye have a lovely day! It was just a reflex as I say things like that to all my clients when they leave. She wasn’t going to have a lovely day and I really shouldn’t have said it. But she still smiled and said you too.

I also told a client recently good luck with your wedding as she was getting married the following week! She replied you too! on the way out the door. I am not getting married. I’m sure she is still cringing.

It’s possible lots of people say thanks to this receptionist on the way out (I often say thank you to receptionists) so her standard response is thanks you too! And she didn’t really hear/pay attention exactly what you said and just said her automatic response. Your brain often kind of hears responds to what you expect to hear not what is exactly said.

Is that the best you can do because I point out an inconvenient fact to you? I'm not "peeved" at all. Get over yourself.

I once had a job in retail and I would frequently accidentally say 'thank you' to people coming in and 'hello' to people leaving. It almost certainly wasn't personal.

Mydietstartstomorrow · 14/05/2025 18:35

@Roodleyou Did you read my last comment?! If I’m wrong then that’s fine but I know how she said it and it wasn’t friendly!
btw 66% of voters say not unreasonable so I thought that was an overwhelming majority 🤷🏻‍♀️ but you carry on once the threads been done…. Knock yourself out
