My son is changing.

Hi everyone. my son is 22 and I have been noticing a lot of changes in his interests. my and DH were hoping he would go down the dependable sensible type. But he seems to be keen on the arts. He's been talking about starting a podcast with his friends and he's stopped cutting his hair and is getting a ridiculous mullet to go alongside a wispy mustache which looks so untidy. The other day he tried to show me a video of Ed Sheeran where Ed Sheeran was showing off all his tattoos. I am just worried that the artistic life is a struggle and certainly don't want him getting a Tattoo he used to be such a sensible boy. Am I over reacting?

What your son has are the early symptoms of becoming a hipster.

I'm afraid once he's on the pathway it's tricky to avoid developing further - you could perhaps try some doses of heavy metal music, and start to practise generalised misogyny around him to try and cement the idea of more traditional life choices -

But since he's reached the podcast threshold, it's likely he's unfortunately not able to be helped now. Don't worry though, most likely he'll become simultaneously very stylish and will be able to give you tips on how to keep your house plants alive and how to fix your bicycle.

This, unfortunately.

Skunk is the least of your worries (how can you identify skunk 🤨). It’s the avocados you have to remain vigilant to.

I have caught him with some skunk a couple of times. sigh.

The majority of ‘sensible’ high success career men (Doctors, lawyers, finance roles etc) do cocaine.

Is your son happy? Maybe focus on that. Supporting his artist goals will make them much easier. But I suppose Ed Sheeran’s mum cries herself to sleep every time he brings home another BRIT award.

YYYDlilah · 12/05/2025 15:53

@MissDoubleU , do you have any data to back up that statement?

Throwingpots · 12/05/2025 15:53

You asked if you were over reacting. Yes you are.

You don’t really ‘catch’ 22 year olds doing skunk.
You just become aware that they are doing it.
all sounds perfectly normal to me.
(But if he’s stinking your house out with it then totally within your rights challenge that!)

Maddy70 · 12/05/2025 15:54

He's a normal 22 Ur old man leave him alone

Someone2025 · 12/05/2025 15:54

BarbBarb · 12/05/2025 15:42

This is what I worry about unfortunately!

What career would you like him to choose?

The direction most professions are going to take is a bit up in the air at the moment with the intervention of AI, things are going to change a lot in the next few years

WallaceinAnderland · 12/05/2025 15:55

I hope he's using vegan ink.

Huh?!

Next thing he'll be dropping out and training in mandolin-making and growing organic rocket.

You may mock, but from there it’s only a hop skip and a jump to living on a canal boat and going vegan.
Quelle horreur! 😉

Nonsense

Thanks for all your input, I appreciate you taking the time to comment, I guess its just a lot of change in a short space of time. The hair and tasch look ridiculous though.

Most people look pretty ridiculous when they're young. I was young in the 80s. I was pretty conservative in my dress compared to a lot of my peers, but I still wince at photos of me with perm and shoulder pads.

Are you thinking of Our Rochelle?

FigTreeInEurope · 12/05/2025 16:00

I did time in prison for growing weed OP. I may have got a bit carried away with it... I still managed to get my career back on track, get married, have kids.. Please just love him.

There’s plenty to be fair, yes. There’s also the fact it’s so expensive. It’s notoriously favoured among those with high flying careers because they frequently feel they need something better than coffee to keep up with that lifestyle.

No, at least not consciously -I don’t know who/what that is, sorry!

FancyAnxiety · 12/05/2025 16:12

This is satire right 🤣

My 11 year old asked for a mullet haircut. It really threw me as I thought they were for 70s films only. I think they are just in fashion, a new stupid hairstyle will be along shortly.

DottieMoon · 12/05/2025 16:17

They’ve been very much in fashion for at least 5 years now.

I’ve had a Chelsea cut before myself. Somehow, I still survived the night.

I have many working professional friends with mullets. Likewise the length of certain parts of their hair over others doesn’t seem to stifle their intelligence or abilities.

Collegennow · 12/05/2025 16:19

Of course you can worry but it's his life and at 22 he will make his own choices. I do understand mine are all creative types albeit doing quite well out of it

JHound · 12/05/2025 16:19

What kind of podcast does he want to start? Men and podcast microphones don’t seem to be a good combination.

Mothership4two · 12/05/2025 16:20

From the thread title, my brain went to werewolf!

Sounds like he is 'finding himself' or trying to trying out new ideas and looks. I bet lots of parents would be happy if all they had to worry about was their child having a mullet and watching Ed Sheeran videos! Mullets seem to be back in - unfortunately - and a few footballers are sporting them. There are plenty of well paid jobs in the arts.

I'd love to have an arty child, my two are very much the opposite.

thestudio · 12/05/2025 16:25

Ed Sheeran, the Alastair Crowley of our times.
