Neighbour bbq smoke

Heathershimmerwinner · 11/05/2025 15:54

Hi. My neighbour round the back has a raised bbq area. He has bbqs twice a day, not kidding. It’s getting a bit too much. The smell of the smoke is making me feel sick. We don’t get on with him as it is. So speaking to him is out the question. My washing constantly smells of smoke. I wouldn’t bother if he barbecued now and again. But it’s twice a day.

Contact Environmental Health. If he is using a wood fire the smoke is considerable. The odd occasion is deemed reasonable but twice a day constitutes a nuisance.

It is classed anti social behaviour.

Also check your local council as mine is a smoke free borough.

I like the smell of a BBQ, I don't like billowing smoke that permeates into my house even with the windows shut. In built up area it should be banned.

We do majority of cooking outdoors in thw grill during summer. But we and everyone we know use gas grill so there is no smoke. I'm juat mainly supriaed that this many people use bbq's that smoke and bonfires. Haven't seen that outside mumsnet.

But you hanging your washing out and then name calling me because I choose to BBQ, is impacting me!

How so? By stopping you from doing something that doesn’t remain within the confines of your garden? So what? Don’t do things that travel into others’s private space.

I've never once said OP has to be happy about it.

I said it was a normal part of living with neighbours.

You’ve argued that OP has to accept it. But would accept someone playing loud music late into the night? Or throwing huge garden parties? Or having a garden covered in dog mess that is a risk to health and smells?

You will have your limits for sure and no one would just tell you to accept it. Life is about kindness and compromise. Not just what you want.

It's a necessity if it saves money putting on the heating to dry washing. Dries quickly outdoors.

Something may be useful but that doesn't mean it's necessary. You can dry washing indoors without the heating if you need to.

Plug in a fan and point it his way, thats what I did. Its the only thing to do if you cannot talk to him, Or make a fence panel taller where the bbq is maybe?

ickky · 11/05/2025 17:41

@Rewis That wouldn't bother me or affect your neighbours. I wish everyone was as considerate as you.

Which, if done regularly, is a risk to human health.

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/05/2025 17:43

I don’t see how you can ask someone to stop bbq-ing in their own garden (well, ok, you can ask, they can say no.) Speak to the council if you want, but I can’t see them doing anything..Let us know how you get on, it’s a tough one when the weather is like this for sure.

UndermyShoeJoe · 11/05/2025 17:43

I’m sorry but electric or gas isn’t bbq. That really is just cooking outside on a outside hob / oven really 😅🤷🏻‍♀️

If something was a genuine nuisance like 24/7 music then I would make a complaint to the council.

But no, I wouldn't give two shits if someone let their dog mess in the garden (how would I even know?), threw parties, had a BBQ or let their kids play out early at the weekends.

I'm sure I do plenty of things that annoy my neighbours. Live and let live.

No thanks, don't want it stinking of damp!🤣

Don’t do things that travel into others’s private space

But that covers most things people do in their gardens! Mowing a lawn, leaf blowing, DIY, playing football, chatting, having a drink with a friend, having lunch, listening to the radio, spreading some manure, even growing jasmine. We are not under an obligation any of us to behave like abstemious Trappists just because some people are intolerant.

lol we planted trees a few years ago but taking ages to grow. They are at fence level now. So still got a while to go. We might need to think of something else to block the smoke

a lot of dog mess smells. And you’d be fine with constant noisy parties going on into the night? I didn’t mention kids.

And OP finds this a genuine nuisance, who are you to tell her it isn’t? I don’t believe you’d happily accept any old thing happening next door to you if it disturbed you on a daily basis.

I do the majority of my cooking outside in this weather. Don't like it, don't put your washing out.

Lovely considerate neighbour you are 🙄

Then you accept that if you dry it outside, it might smell of smoke, or car fumes, or get shit on by birds.

Maybe not but it is up to the neighbours to ensure they aren’t pissing other people off every day. I’d feel ashamed if I was risking my neighbours health. But then, I’m not a shitty person.

There are ways to cook outside without being a headache for other people.

I've said multiple times she can find it a nuisance - but finding something a nuisance doesn't mean you get to complain about it.

And FWIW, I can hear our neighbours pretty much every night in summer - they have music on, they chat, they slam their car doors - I just use a fan and wear earplugs if I need to sleep. It's really not an issue to me.

Ebeneser · 11/05/2025 17:49

They shouldn’t be allowed to sell barbecue coals etc unless they are smokeless. The problem is not the BBQ per se, but the smoke certain BBQs generate. Gas BBQs or smokeless coals are the way to go. Anyone that thinks otherwise is a selfish twunt.

That’s good for you, but it IS an issue for OP. And she is well within her rights to contact environmental health and the council to see if anything can be done. She doesn’t have to be told to just put up and shut up just because you would accept it. The neighbours have a responsibility not to be a nuisance to others. That’s what being a good neighbour is. If they don’t then they’re not good people.

I also don’t believe that if something was disturbing you every day that you couldn’t fix with earplugs then you wouldn’t be so accepting.

Edited

I can guarantee that every single person on this thread does something to piss off their neighbours. None of us are perfect.

Maybe I am selfish, but I don't give a second thought to how my neighbours dry their laundry and I very much doubt they care about mine when they're out BBQ-ing (which they are right now, incidentally).

If you live in close quarters to other people, you do have to suck up a certain amount of behaviour that you find annoying. That's humans for you.

You can believe whatever you want - I'm not here to prove anything to you.

If OP wants to complain she can - as long as she's aware of the consequences if she ever comes to sell, for example.
