Neighbour bbq smoke

Heathershimmerwinner · 11/05/2025 15:54

Hi. My neighbour round the back has a raised bbq area. He has bbqs twice a day, not kidding. It’s getting a bit too much. The smell of the smoke is making me feel sick. We don’t get on with him as it is. So speaking to him is out the question. My washing constantly smells of smoke. I wouldn’t bother if he barbecued now and again. But it’s twice a day.

OP posts:

Well if you’re not willing to speak to him you’ll have to try and communicate telepathically.

Or maybe via smoke signals

Oblomov25 · 11/05/2025 19:12

Which council would consider bbq'ing a nuisance and a noise pollutant? I can't see any.
Now bbq'ing is a crime, because of burning meat and PAH's. Good grief.

smart ar**! Why would I communicate telepathically? 🙄 I’d obviously speak to the environmental health

Oh wow, I’m embarrassed for you with this comment. Environmental health…wow

your verbal drivel is pathetic, you know nothing about the history of my neighbour. His son was bullying my son years ago. Which this has nothing to do with. I’m complaining due to him barbecuing twice a day every day. If it was a different neighbour I’d still be annoyed. It’s bloody annoying and rude.

If it has nothing to do with it then why bring it up.

and sorry OP but you are incredibly rude…

BBQ cooking is a very unhealthy choice.

Carcinogenic chemicals called Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are generated when organic substances are burned. On a barbecue this includes the fats dripping down onto the wood or charcoal, as well as flames reaching the surface of the meat. The smoke from the burning heat source also covers the surface with PAHs, and build-up can occur in smoked foods at any temperature.

Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are chemicals created when any meat — or poultry or fish — is cooked at a high temperature. Cooking food close to the coals, in a smoky environment or for prolonged periods, can create high levels of HCAs and PAHs in your food. In lab experiments, these chemicals have been found to be mutagenic — that is, they cause changes in DNA that may increase the risk of cancer.

I’m just off to get my burger 🍔 off the BBQ! I’m not too worried.

Seems to you? You’re not the LA, you don’t determine the threshold for excessive. Your indignation doesn’t render the BBQ excessive

Reading skills are essential.

trailmx · 11/05/2025 19:41

I think my neighbours must have a smokeless barbecue. They cook outside most days because there's the occasional whiff of delicious food cooking and a bit of smoke when first lit but after that I don't notice anything. If I dried washing outside there'd be no problem.
Must find out what they use.

ThejoyofNC · 11/05/2025 15:58

I do the majority of my cooking outside in this weather. Don't like it, don't put your washing out.

Oh look OP, your neighbour is on MN!!

How very considerate of you.

Hellskitchen24 · 11/05/2025 19:46

This would really wind me up if it was twice a day and stank. But I’m not sure there is anything you can do. The neighbours a few doors down have one most nights and we are in terraces so they might as well be next door. It makes the house stink of smoke. Theirs smell of literal cigarettes too so god knows what they are burning or cooking.

I have relatives in Canada that literally BBQ every night, year round, including in winter. But their properties and outdoor space are massive so it doesn’t impact on anyone else. That’s the difference.

Well then, if you're gonna be that upset with some jovial responses and have already clearly decided you're contacting environmental health, what the fuck was the point of starting this thread 😂

LoafofSellotape · 11/05/2025 16:00

Why does washing trump cooking outside?

Because the smell of washing doesn't taint everything for several gardens around, people don't have to go round shutting their windows so their house doesn't stink of next door's washing.....yes, it's inconsiderate.

Selfish

luckylavender · 11/05/2025 19:57

faerietales · 11/05/2025 16:02

This is one of those things that seems to wind people up on MN but is just normal and acceptable IRL.

You can't tell your neighbour that he can't use his own BBQ in his own garden.

Twice a day is not normal

lizzyBennet08 · 11/05/2025 20:02

I think it is obnoxious but unfortunately not illegal or against any council regulations so im not sure what good complaining him would do except meaning you’d have to declare it as a dispute if selling.

ElixirOfLife · 11/05/2025 20:09

I expect he’s making the most of the nice weather. If it was a garden fire I’d agree with you OP but I don’t think you can do a lot about a BBQ.

Generally the smoky phase only lasts until the coals are hot. Then it’ll be the cooking smells. I think you need to get your washing out quick when he’s finished cooking and before his next one.

Says who? Is there a normal manual? Chapter on bbq frequency

newchapternewday · 11/05/2025 20:25

Heronwatcher · 11/05/2025 16:06

He’s not doing anything wrong. No one “official” will give a monkeys, unless he’s burning car tyres or animal carcasses! You can theoretically do a BBQ for breakfast, lunch and dinner in your own garden if you want.

Honestly I think you might just need to have a chat and see if you can agree a couple of days when he doesn’t BBQ, or, if you’re not prepared to do that, make alternative arrangements for very nice weather (use a heated airer or front garden?).

If smoke from a neighbouring property is affecting the enjoyment of your home, then environmental health can take action

Oioisavaloy27 · 11/05/2025 20:31

Ebeneser · 11/05/2025 17:49

They shouldn’t be allowed to sell barbecue coals etc unless they are smokeless. The problem is not the BBQ per se, but the smoke certain BBQs generate. Gas BBQs or smokeless coals are the way to go. Anyone that thinks otherwise is a selfish twunt.

What because they don't agree with you?

Twinkeeyes · 11/05/2025 20:36

Hi
How about accidentally watering your garden and goes on bbq.

MathsMagpie · 11/05/2025 20:37

Are we talking breakfast and lunch? Lunch and dinner? Breakfast and dinner? Does he mix it up at all?

Correct. He can be required to abate if it is a statutory nuisance. Longer term, thick bamboo screening will really help, but take a couple of years to establish

If I were the neighbour I would just do the same to her washing. Stupid comment…
