To think forced starvation is just plain evil!

On the BBC today. The UN has condemned using man made starvation as a war tactic. Surely we can come to a general consensus that whatever you think about the conflict, Israel's actions here are just plain evil?

This is a very difficult situation because in the one hand nobody wants to see innocent children suffering. But on the other hand, simply prolonging the fight by being soft, having ceasefires etc, is much worse in the long run.

It's what Israel has been doing ever since its inception, and it's what has caused thousands of deaths on both sides. Thousands of innocent deaths.

It sounds terrible to say, but at this point I think the only way forward is for Israel to win decisively. Historically this was always how peace and new hope blossomed. When one side lost and acknowledged its defeat. Germany and Japan are prime examples.

After WWI there was only an armistice, ie ceasefire. That paved the way for WWII and the many millions who died in those terrible years. After WWII, when Germany was routed, they looked to the future. Nazism was by and large eradicated, and Germany was rebuilt as a tolerant, peaceful and prosperous nation. Ditto for Japan.

When the people of Gaza realise this is a defeat and surrender (and hand back the hostages), that will be the moment they can start healing and rebuilding. It's just sad that their own government - Hamas - cares so little about them and are willing to fight to the last man.

I agree. I do wonder what it will take for it all to end.

‘Blowing people up’ is not deliberate and stated genocide.

A war in which both sides have armies is not the same as an unrecognised state without an army being pulverised by weapons sourced from all over the world including illegal weapons such as white phosphorus.

You think Hamas aren’t an Army?

You mean large numbers of Jews being killed for being Jewish?

October 7th hardly happened out of nowhere.

What happened before October 7th that in your opinion justifies the murder of over 1200 people in one single day, plus rape, plus hostage taking?

Goodness me you like your pointless melodramatic statements don’t you.

Recognising that a more peaceful approach is for a war to end and there to be a victor than the continuation of fighting, is not disgusting.

Out of interest how would you like it to all end?

thepariscrimefiles · 11/05/2025 12:01

JandamiHash · 11/05/2025 11:43

That wasn’t what I asked but it’s interesting that you dodged the questions.

War crimes are always been committed in conflict and always will be - and have been on both sides in the Israel Gaza conflict. Our own military certainly committed horrific crimes in living memory. Why people expect only the IDF to behave perfectly is beyond me and little to do with the fact Israel still needs to defend itself.

People expect the armies of civilised 1st world countries not to commit war crimes. Hamas is a terrorist organisation and they have behaved like terrorists. People expect behaviour in accordance with international law from the IDF particularly as it has previously been described as 'the most moral army in the world'.

DrPrunesqualer · 11/05/2025 11:46

You asked a direct question and by your own standards @Elizacat answered it

No she didn’t.

Ill ask you, seeing as only one person had answered so far - what do you think will happen if Israel is disarmed?

DrPrunesqualer · 11/05/2025 12:04

Twiglets1 · 11/05/2025 11:55

I think some people are using their brains to look at how the question is phrased and the nuances around the war and not just answering the question on a literal basis.

I feel sorry for anyone with such a negative opinion of human nature that they would seriously think 21% of Mumsnet users seeing this thread think starving babies & children is ok.

It seems obvious to me people are saying the title of the thread isn’t reasonable.

And yet people have voted to a very direct question.

No one is forced to vote. If they vote they believe one way or the other.
21% believe the starvation of civilians is not evil.
Thankfully 79% believe it is evil

If some are unsure, as the question may be more far reaching, then they can decide not to vote and discuss instead.
If mumsnetters are voting they have made their decision.

This thread would have been interesting had it not been about Israel and Gaza.
I wonder then what the %s would be ?

JandamiHash · 11/05/2025 12:05

Dumbledore167 · 11/05/2025 11:52

Is the destruction of homes and theft of land “defence” in your view? Genuine question

Israel is Jewish homeland, stolen from them - or have we forgotten that?

The defence is on the fact that neighbouring countries want Jews obliterated. HTH.

Ill ask you - what do you think would happen if Israel laid down its arms?

DrPrunesqualer · 11/05/2025 12:05

I’m on a thread about the evils of starving civilians

JandamiHash · 11/05/2025 12:06

thepariscrimefiles · 11/05/2025 11:54

Israel has already won decisively. They just want to make Gaza completely uninhabitable for the Palestinians. What does a post-surrender Gaza look like for the Palestinians under an ultra right-wing Messianic government?

They have not won. A powerful wealthy and well resourced terrorist organisation is operating next door to them, with the key aim of exterminating all Jews. That’s not winning until the power is taken away from them or they all hopefully die.

Then the responses would be “We need more than that OP”.

The assumption that everyone who’ve voted YABU must love starving children is very odd and obtuse indeed

What a shock, people don’t want to be honest about what would happen to Israel if it stopped defending itself.

Youd be on a thread about “Remember when there were Jews in the world” if that happened FWIW.

Thegreyhound · 11/05/2025 12:16

I know Hamas are not an army. It’s not a question of think.

Jews and Israel are not the same thing, why are you conflating them?

Or perhaps a direct question such as OPs is too hard to face up to and admit

Or perhaps it was a childish, loaded question.

Thegreyhound · 11/05/2025 12:17

If the only Jewish state (the very existence of which really seems to upset people despite the fact other religions have dozens of their own states) is obliterated, it’s only a matter of time before Jews elsewhere were also taken out - and u like now they’d have nowhere to go, no haven if Holocaust 2.0 reared its ugly head - and don’t say it wouldn’t happen. Antisemtism is rising rapidly the world over. People are simply teeming for an excuse to murder Jews.

Are you implying in this post that I am blaming ‘Jews’ for October 7th and therefore that I am an antisemite? Because that’s what it looks like and that is libel. You’d better ask to get it taken down.

Joyunlimited · 11/05/2025 12:21

Thegreyhound · 11/05/2025 12:17

Probably because the stated aim of Hamas, in their founding charter and never repudiated, is to kill all Jews. Not Israelis - Jews.

I won’t ask it to get taken down. Maybe you should ask to get your disgusting justification down if the murder and rape of women and murder of babies and toddlers?

You’re blaming someone for October 7th though - who?
Whose fault is it?

Try answering without making a melodramatic punchy statement

It’s a terrorist organisation as you know full well. That is not an army. Armies are MEANT to abide by the rules of war and within international law.

What exactly is your point? Do you think Hamas are defending their children?
Why did they launch the October 7th attack then, didn’t they think there might be consequences? Did October 7th make their and their children’s lives safer?

So you are standing by the fact that you have accused me of blaming Jews for October 7th? think carefully about that.
