To be getting second hand embarrassment because my DH is wearing sandals!

For the first time since I’ve known him, my 43 year old DH has bought himself some sandals. I don’t know why but they make me cringe. I think sandals on men look so naff and ‘old man’.

I’ve put a photo of the pair he has bought on this post.

AIBU or do they look really naff and embarrassing?!

Sweet Jesus…. Represent each other Confused
I’m very happily married myself, but we certainly haven’t fused into one being, I genuinely can’t think of anything more suffocating.
But it obviously works for you 🤷🏻‍♀️

We absolutely fused into one being, great description. I get that, it totally isn’t for everyone, and I feel suffocated being around anyone else for more than a few hours non-stop, but we’ve been together the vast majority of our lives, so we’re basically a hivemind at this point.

I didn’t mean it like that though- I meant more, if you’re a professional woman, a smart dresser who likes putting effort into your appearance, it would be strange to walk down the street with a guy in a stained vest, basketball shorts, and sliders. You might not want to take him to your office party, because the way he looks reflects on you. It’s not nice, but it would be a consideration.

He’s been wearing ‘outdoor’ clothing since we first met, and I’ve got used to that over the years.

However, this seems a step too far!

Is this light hearted or are you seriously getting the ick because of them

I really don’t like them but I suppose if the man wearing them is very handsome maybe just maybe I could look past it

fragrancefriend · 10/05/2025 23:05

My DH has no fashion sense but he came home with these I’d LTB 🤣

Escapingagain · 10/05/2025 23:11

Well they are not the best looking shoe I may have been tempted to tell him also. Op have you got the ick? 😂

Butteredradish3 · 10/05/2025 23:12

No, no, no!! I would feel embarrassed and really turned off.

pinkglitter12 · 10/05/2025 23:21

It's that sudden realisation that you're old

dontforgetme · 10/05/2025 23:22

I haven’t RTFT op but yes I’m with you. They’re hideous and I would cringe from the inside out if my dp wore these.

Ddakji · 10/05/2025 23:26

For those saying it’s old etc - DH wears these and DD (15) the other day told me she thought he looked about 30 and “definitely doesn’t have a dad-bod” (he’s 53).

So I think you’re talking bollocks
and just sound quite juvenile, tbh.

lovemycbf · 10/05/2025 23:27

Oh god no I’d die of embarrassment if my husband sported a pair of those.
I’d have to say something 😱😳

ruethewhirl · 10/05/2025 21:03

And this is why I often find men’s feet a bit cringe. So many men just do not take care of their feet. Hard skin, hairy toes, toenails that haven’t seen clippers since 1972. Grim. Not all men, of course, but many.

Are you a chiropodist?

Strawberrypicnic · 10/05/2025 23:48

If you wouldn't want him to tell you what to wear then you're being really unreasonable

pinkglitter12 · 10/05/2025 23:57

It's cute! He's approaching middle age and he's choosing shoes that solidify he's a comfortable taken man

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 11/05/2025 00:02

He could be padding around in fluffy slipper boots. He could be sashaying around in stilettos. Comfy sandals aren't much to cringe over.

I would rather these then people doing the fake tan same hair, lips etc. Trying to look 'good' or 'young' but regardless whatever people wear is no reflection on anyone else except makes the person complaining sound about 12

outerspacepotato · 11/05/2025 00:13

They look like Keens. They're great for walking and light hiking and as a swim shoe. They're functional footwear for outdoor warm weather activities and they hold up well too.

Ihmppmmwtbwote · 10/05/2025 22:06

Home educated?? How rude are you?

He said that. Not her.

k1233 · 10/05/2025 22:41

Provided he doesn't pair them with socks, you're fine!

It would be better if he did, the socks would absorb the sweat and ease the sour stink.

When a man does it it is controlling a woman fashion it seems

fiveIsNewOne · 11/05/2025 00:29

Wow. So many ridiculous suggestions.

Who in their right mind would prefer flipflops over good sandals?

wobblyweasel · 11/05/2025 00:45

The moment he even thinks about wearing them with socks LTB Grin

My relationship is wonderful, childhood sweethearts, don’t really fight, best friends, love each other unconditionally etc.

If you can’t tell your life partner the truth, and roast them when they look dumb, why bother? My DH has said ‘I’m not going out with you dressed like THAT!’ but it wasn’t because it was ‘too sexy’ or something gross but because I looked “home educated”. I think there’s a pretty big gap between controlling what your partner wears and saying they’re embarrassing you because you’re dressed weird.

As long as they’re a supportive partner and will still love you and treat you with respect however you’re dressed- they can have an opinion because a couple represent each other.

I feel sorry for you. I can't imagine living with a man who tells me I'm not allowed to wear the clothes I want to.

And "home educated" ?? Horrible comment

Or heels over anything normal?

elfendom · 11/05/2025 01:07

ultimately, I don't think anyone is going look at that fucking weirdo and his sandals 😂
