To be getting second hand embarrassment because my DH is wearing sandals!

For the first time since I’ve known him, my 43 year old DH has bought himself some sandals. I don’t know why but they make me cringe. I think sandals on men look so naff and ‘old man’.

I’ve put a photo of the pair he has bought on this post.

AIBU or do they look really naff and embarrassing?!

YANBU. I have a black bin bag where DH’s bad clothes choices disappear, to see if they are missed. If they’re not, then it’s off to the charity shop. Those would most definitely be in it.

If DH did that with my clothes I would be furious. I’m sure he’d love to get rid of my Crocs but as he’s not controlling he doesn’t.

I couldn’t be married to someone who tried to tell me what to wear!

Much better than that preppy boat shoes with no socks look..yuck!

Agree! Sandals fine. Boat shoes - ew!

It's the thought of the film of sweat between foot and enclosed leather shoe.

Well, that’s just a thought in your fetid mind. I have Keens and this doesn’t happen.

I mean in boat/deck shoes that don't have any holes to let the air circulate a bit.

Ah right, I didn’t expand the whole quote history.

But I would assume those shoes don’t get like that otherwise why would people wear them?! Though I thought on boats the ideal was to not wear shoes at all, but maybe that’s just in Australia.

Purpleturtle43 · 11/05/2025 08:46

I admire people who wear what they want and don't care what other people think. My husband wears some cringy shirts but I don't care, I just think good for you for having the confidence!

I would 100% prefer that that a guy who is all about labels and being trendy. That would give me the ick much more than sandals.

JohnTheRevelator · 11/05/2025 08:57

Just as long as he doesn't wear socks with them. Now that would be unforgivable. 😂

nomas · 11/05/2025 09:00

Post a pic of YOUR shoes, OP, I guarantee we can criticise them and feel second hand embarrassment for you.

CarlaH · 11/05/2025 09:01

They seem fine to me. Sliders with socks though look bloody awful.

FrenchandSaunders · 11/05/2025 09:03

Christ they’re awful! 😳

DrummingMousWife · 11/05/2025 09:04

He has every right to wear sandals.
I agree though, they are pretty awful.

He would be ok to do this to your clothes?

Oh fgs, leave him be. What’s the matter with you?

Fixed your typo… “Oh, fgs, leave him.” 😂

CheeseDreamsTonight · 11/05/2025 09:09

They don’t even really look like sandals and if he is walking / running in them he certainly won’t be the only one wearing them

QuaintShaker · 11/05/2025 02:05

Men's sandals have really come back into fashion as of last year. That particular pair probably skew more functional than stylish, but I think you're just a bit out of touch, OP.

Definitely, DH and a good few of our friends are wearing sandals, mainly Birkenstocks.

RedPandaClaws · 11/05/2025 09:25

Just to say to all those complaining about uncut nails and hairy toes, this style of sandal has a closed toe so you can barely see any of the foot at all! Just small patches of skin, and then the heel. One of the keen sandals even has a closed heel.

LuvACustardCream · 11/05/2025 09:29

Is he controlling about what you wear? Of is it just you that's the problem

XiCi · 11/05/2025 09:56

MrsFunnyFanny · 11/05/2025 07:30

Agree with you Op. They’re hideous. Thankfully my husband isn’t a sandals wearer, but my kids would have his life if he ever tried😂

God yes. Our teens would be brutal 🤣

IridaceaeFloribunda · 11/05/2025 11:05

Oof YANBU they’re awful. I can’t stand action sandals, they’re neither use nor ornament IMO.
Mercifully DH is not a sandal man, I’m only just coming to terms with him wearing pyjamas after shunning them for 20 odd years.

Blanca87 · 11/05/2025 11:34

First the sandals, then it will escalate to the regatta fleece, walking boots with cargo shorts in peak winter. <inserts just to do a Tesco shop>

Of course sandals are useful. Who wants to wear shoes and socks in the heat? 🤮

People who don’t want filthy feet and who prefer not to have to remove debris from their footwear every twenty steps?
I find socks wick sweat away from the feet, there’s nowhere for it to go in sandals

Also forgot to include people who don’t want to get blisters every summer.

I’m not sure where you’re walking but I wear sandals and don’t have filthy feet or have to constantly remove ‘debris’! I don’t have blisters either
