Do you have 30 fruit & veg in your fridge/ freezer/ cupboard right now?

GRex · 10/05/2025 19:44

I read "do you eat 30 different fruit / veg in a week", and I started out curious if we even HAD 30 to pick from. We don't all eat all items, and certainly not all within a week; of the 36+ core items it's unlikely any individual one of us would go over 20 on a given week. How many do you have and actually use?

This is what we have; occasional other bits like figs I don't buy enough to count, I think this is the main set:
13? Fridge: olives, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, iceberg lettuce, artichokes, romaine lettuce, rocket, baby courgette, mixed peppers, fresh chillies, ginger, garlic, baby leek, red onion, spring onion, coleslaw, kimchi, some M&S mixed salad packs (assume we won't count garlic and random pack mixes)
3 Fruit: apples, clementines, raisins
3 Freezer fruit (only for pancakes): blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
3 Freezer veg: cauliflower rice, sprouts, mushrooms garlic, ginger, chillies, mixed greens thing, packs of chopped leek/ courgette / onion / aubergine (from when we were going away)
5 Fruit juices: apple, raspberry, pineapple, rhubarb, grapefruit.
10? Cupboard (used a lot but removing lots of duplicates): peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, almonds, cashews, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, chia, sesame, black sesame, mixed), beans (baked, black, pinto, butter, kidney), water chestnut, bamboo, grated coconut, tinned tomato, tomato paste, mixed grains, artichokes
0 Cupboard (so rarely used): pistachio butter, pearl barley, hearts of palm, poppy seeds, lentils of various types (not counted as not eaten often), walnuts.

Wont't all that stuff in your fridge go off before you manage to eat it?

Thank you! This is all such a doctrine of perfection (and a lot of expensive, out of season fruit.)
We are a small family and we live in a small house with pathetic kitchen space and one under the counter fridge and ditto freezer. So, space-where?
Also, One small pack of two lettuces would take us 3 meals to eat, let alone the cherries, mangoes etc listed above. How on earth do people eat all that, unless your family is considerably larger than mine, before it deteriorates?

Some of my list is frozen, tinned, dried, or still in my garden!

The herbs and leafy veg I listed is all still growing - the spinach, chard, rosemary, chives, parsley, mint and coriander, plus the rhubarb.

Of the rest, some veg and fruit lasts for ages - butternut squash, onions, cauliflower, apples, etc. They stuff that doesn't last as long is eaten first. Tonight we're having pork steaks with roasted peppers, aubergine, tomatoes, with onions and garlic. Any leftover veg will be made into a pasta sauce to freeze.

I do admit though, I spend a lot of time and energy on this, I love to meal plan, cook ( and eat!). I also only work part time so can spend time on this stuff.

DinoLil · 11/05/2025 07:39

I have a tin of mixed bean salad. Does that count as five?!

TaggySits · 11/05/2025 07:40

I wouldn't normally have all this, but we have guests staying so I did a huge shop yesterday and have:

Fruit: bananas, apples, oranges, melon, watermelon, pineapple, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, mango

Salad: tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce peppers

Veg: carrots, parsnips, cauliflower, celery, mushrooms, potatoes, peas, sweetcorn, sugarsnap peas, beetroot, onion

Dried goods: raisins, mixed nuts

Herbs/spices: frozen ginger, frozen garlic, then range of dried herbs/spices on spice rack, of which we would use about 10 each month in various meals.

So we do have over 30 right now, but that's only ever the case in the approximately 90 seconds between me doing the food shop and the teenagers entering the kitchen.

I used to have a small fridge-freezer, and that is hard. Particularly the freezer, because you can't just chop and freeze veg or berries if they're getting to the stage where they've hung around too long. Even with a bigger freezer we are in tetris mode to use the space whenever a big shop comes.

I'm amazed how much fruit some people eat, but use just depends on your food preferences. We can't buy more than 3 leaf things at once or it doesn't last, but 3 is fine; DH and I both eat most lunches at home too. Iceberg and romaine both last much longer uncut than say cut mixed leaves. DH and I usually have at least one dinner that has lettuce as the main base (e.g. fried chicken salad), plus we have leaves in wraps and burger so that's another two meals. DS has iceberg lettuce in a wrap once or twice a week. That uses up most of the iceberg, romaine and all the extra leaf item will be in one dish (rocket this week, another week might be pak choi, chicory, spinach). Any leftover will be added to other bits and used with lunch. If you gave us kale though, it would just sit there sadly until I chuck it out or take it to the neighbour opposite who gets through 2-3 kale every week (learned that in lockdown).

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/05/2025 09:38

I have -

Fresh/fridge - bananas, blueberries, coleslaw, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, potatoes, onion, celery, radish, tomato puree

Frozen - raspberries, peas, carrots, Brussels sprouts, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower rice, swede & carrot mash, sofrito mix, roasting parsnips

cupboard - tinned tomato, dried lentils, various tins of beans, various half eaten tubs of spices and dried herbs. Had no idea that nut butters would count - I have peanut and almond, also some ground seed mix I for adding to porridge.

So, possibly just about 30, and counting it through in my head, probably more than I would have thought. I have frozen veggie ready meals too - a vegetable lasagne, veggie korma and a Spanish bean stew. Do they count? And a couple of tins of vegetable soup and some flavoured lentil pouches. We don’t tend to have a lot of fresh stuff in at one time as there’s only DH and I and we shop fairly frequently (retired and DH likes his daily trip to Tesco!)

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/05/2025 09:42

We have some mixed fruit smoothies in the fridge too.

OnyourbarksGSG · 11/05/2025 10:17

I’ve got frozen summer fruit mix, blueberries, avocado, pineapple and mango.

grapefruit, Green beans, cauliflower, broccoli, purple sprouting broccoli, garlic, Ginger, spring onions, lettuce, onions, carrots and celery in the fridge. Apples, bananas and plums on the side. I’m growing my own lions mane mushrooms. Dried mixed mushrooms.

pickled beetroot, cabbage, toms, cucumber, onions and home made fermented sauerkraut.

tinned would be sweetcorn, mushy peas, potatoes, mixed beans, chick peas and butter beans.

dried fruit, cherries, coconut, mixed candied peel. Dried pulses and beans.

that’s a lot more than I expected but I wouldn’t eat all of these in a week, but likely would eat all of them over a month?

Sparrow7 · 11/05/2025 10:22

I double checked the 30 when I listened to a podcast about it a while ago. As a family we easily eat 30 different plants over 2-3 days and I don't even like fruit.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/05/2025 12:44

W00dpeckerinthew00ds · 11/05/2025 10:04

Also have

Fresh mushroom
Different nuts & seeds
Dried coconut
Dried split lentis
Dried marrowfat peas
Coffee different sorts
Tea different sorts

Do teas and coffees count? What about wine? Chocolate? Grains eg rice and all things made from grains and other plant origins.

Kreepture · 11/05/2025 13:44

GRex · 10/05/2025 20:42

How are you with beans, seeds and nuts? They can add nice variety.

i eat green beans/runner beans those kind of things, occasionally baked beans, lol, we just don't have any in right now.. same as i'll eat broccoli, cauli, cabbage, parsnip and a few others if they're part of a meal.

Seeds i can eat sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds, but it's not something i do often.

Nuts i will eat hazelnuts and salted peanuts.

soupyspoon · 11/05/2025 13:54

GRex · 11/05/2025 06:18

No idea. I'm sure they're fine though, it's just a use by date, tin contents can last decades in practice.

Too right they can. Along with anything else I deem 'ok'!!

last year I finished off some flour that was about 10 years old. It was fine.

Missey85 · 11/05/2025 14:02

All I have is a bag of potatoes 😂 I've never had 30 kinds of fruit/vegetables

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 11/05/2025 14:03

That's just for this weeks meals. There's also other stuff in the cupboard. Vegan so obviously more plant based. But DH who isn't will eat similar.

mamaduckbone · 11/05/2025 14:26

We've been shopping today so it's as good as it gets:
Fruit - apples, bananas, strawberries, pineapple, grapes, blueberries in freezer
Veg - lettuce, cucumber, avocado, papers, radishes, spring onions, pak Choi, carrots, cabbage (to make coleslaw), potatoes, sweet potatoes, beetroot, spinach, mushrooms, onions
Herbs - basil, coriander, rosemary (in garden) thyme (in garden)
Tins and jars - sweetcorn, chickpeas, red kidney beans, olives,
Do nuts count? If so, almonds, walnuts, pine nuts.
Dried fruit - raisins, dates, prunes
I am the most likely to eat most of them, but not all in a week. Ds15 definitely won't.

1SillySossij · 11/05/2025 14:34

ouch321 · 10/05/2025 19:52

Translation:

I want you all to know that I have an abolutely enormous fridge freezer. By knowing this you willl therefore know I have a huge kitchen in a huge house.

And therefore lots of money and I am better than you.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 11/05/2025 14:42

Yes, I counted and got to 30 then read your list and realised we have more because I wasn't including all the nuts/ seeds/ peanut butters, herbs etc

lovegoodlovegood · 11/05/2025 15:31

Single, live alone, don’t usually manage 5 a day but hit 30 plants a week

fridge - strawberries, raspberries, apples, pickles, pickled red onions, baby leaf salad, beetroot, tomatoes, cucumber, bananas, garlic, ginger, peppers, carrots, spring onions

freezer - butternut squash, smoothie mix, sweetcorn, mixed veg steam bags

cupboard - quinoa, oats, peanut butter, baked beans, black beans, cannellini beans, red lentils, tomato puree, tinned tomatoes, peas, peaches, pears

then herbs and spices, about 40 different ones

weareallalittlebitthesame · 11/05/2025 18:15

No, definitely not 🙈😂 There’s some tomatoes and strawberries in the fridge, some apples and a few tins of veg in the cupboard 🤔
