Do you have 30 fruit & veg in your fridge/ freezer/ cupboard right now?

I read "do you eat 30 different fruit / veg in a week", and I started out curious if we even HAD 30 to pick from. We don't all eat all items, and certainly not all within a week; of the 36+ core items it's unlikely any individual one of us would go over 20 on a given week. How many do you have and actually use?

This is what we have; occasional other bits like figs I don't buy enough to count, I think this is the main set:
13? Fridge: olives, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, iceberg lettuce, artichokes, romaine lettuce, rocket, baby courgette, mixed peppers, fresh chillies, ginger, garlic, baby leek, red onion, spring onion, coleslaw, kimchi, some M&S mixed salad packs (assume we won't count garlic and random pack mixes)
3 Fruit: apples, clementines, raisins
3 Freezer fruit (only for pancakes): blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
3 Freezer veg: cauliflower rice, sprouts, mushrooms garlic, ginger, chillies, mixed greens thing, packs of chopped leek/ courgette / onion / aubergine (from when we were going away)
5 Fruit juices: apple, raspberry, pineapple, rhubarb, grapefruit.
10? Cupboard (used a lot but removing lots of duplicates): peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, almonds, cashews, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, chia, sesame, black sesame, mixed), beans (baked, black, pinto, butter, kidney), water chestnut, bamboo, grated coconut, tinned tomato, tomato paste, mixed grains, artichokes
0 Cupboard (so rarely used): pistachio butter, pearl barley, hearts of palm, poppy seeds, lentils of various types (not counted as not eaten often), walnuts.

I lost all my freezer stash the other day after I left the door open and went to bed. 😭

TheBigFatMermaid · 11/05/2025 18:49

Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, grapes, blueberries, tomatoes, nectarines, apples, banana....
Um.. frozen veg wise.. .. broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, runner beans, parsnips, corn on the cob. Tinned peas.
I'm up to 16 I believe and that's it.

I have had weight loss surgery though, so my absorption is limited, so I take vitamins anyway. I enjoy fruit and veg but only really est them because of that not for nutrition.

Unicornsandprincesses · 11/05/2025 19:01

i buy loads frozen: red onion, white onion, broccoli, sweet potato, sweetcorn, peas, green beans.

Fridge: lettuce, toms, cucumber, apple, carrot, pomegranate seeds, fruit juice

cupboards: sultanas, Baked beans, black beans, cannellini beans, — do lentils count

What’s that, 19? not 30 tho

i do have ginger, garlic and chilli plus herbs, that’s not eaten in any quantities to count surely?

oh yeah, fruit!

strawberries in the fridge , and blueberries and cherries in the freezer. Bananas on the windowsill. Did have one orange earlier but that’s been eaten now. Threw away some moulds raspberries earlier too, sadly

faerietales · 11/05/2025 19:05

Nope, not even close.

Cupboards: sweetcorn, baked beans, tinned tomatoes, olives, sundried tomatoes - plus peanut butter if that counts?
Fridge: bell peppers, grapes, strawberries, lettuce, apple juice.
Freezer: peas, mixed veg (carrots, peas, beans, sweetcorn), broccoli, potatoes in various forms, frozen mixed berries.

ColdWaterDipper · 11/05/2025 19:05

I had to count.

Fridge: iceberg lettuce, rocket, pea shoots, vine tomatoes, carrots, runner beans, green beans, broccoli, radishes, celery and cucumber. 11.

Freezer: peas, sweetcorn, brussel sprouts, cauliflower. 4.

Just in the house/ cupboards: apples, bananas, clementines, onions, potatoes (if they count), pomegranate, kiwi and avocado. 8.

We also eat a lot of nuts so we have brazils, peanuts, walnuts, cashews, and almonds, plus dried cranberries with pine nuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.

frozendaisy · 11/05/2025 19:19

I have counted up, out of interest once, we can get 15 into a curry meal and 15 into a mexican meal.

There is some cross over, but there are also many other meals to make up for it! Bowl of home made muesli with various seeds, nuts and fruit tends to do the job!

Except that you have to have spices more than once a week.

And I am a believer that you should enjoy, share food, eat together, savour it, chat, do a puzzle, play a game, have a glass of wine if you fancy it, and make food, because you have to do it, as part of the enjoyment of your day.

Counting items in a fridge freezer, and being able to list them, seems the opposite of eat, drink and be merry!

I am sure the long healthy living Greeks don't count their fridges!

The food industry and social media crew love this competitive diet nonsense. if you have a decent enough diet, and are adequately mobile and exercise, have your vices under control then you might, provided you have the genetic lottery and don't find out that a weeding chemical you have used for years is carcinogenic, or cleaning product or type of shampoo, these pesky chemicals are everywhere, we all have microplastics in our brains now, there are microplastics in ovary fluid!

So if you count your spice rack and salad drawer you might feel superior for a bit but is it really going to make that much difference? What's the point on adding a few years at the end of your life when your brain has already gone to mush?

We should be pushing all of us going plastic free, but it has to be worldwide, rather than being discerning over chia and flax seeds! The powers that be have brilliant ways of making the eye of mordor look elsewhere. 🙂

frozendaisy · 11/05/2025 19:22

But in answer, you can include nuts, seeds, lentils and such like
30 easy but not all in the fridge or freezer

MarchingOnTogether · 11/05/2025 19:22

We currently have

Strawberries
Grapes
Plums
Satsumas
Apples
Pears
Kiwis
Bananas
Watermelon
Honeydew melon
Iceberg lettuce
Cherry tomatoes
Carrots
Sweet peppers
Sugar snap.peas
Onions
Brocolli
Sprouts
Sweet potatoes
Plus peas and sweetcorn in the freezer

Not a bad effort but well short of 30.
I'm a childminder, I feed 2 or 3 toddlers every lunch time and up to 10 after school children so we get through a larger quantity of food than most. If I bought all that for our family of 4 then there would be a lot of waste, I can't imagine many families would buy and use 30 different fruits and veg every week!

Trovindia · 11/05/2025 19:23

Yes I do, I just did a count in my head but can't be bothered to get up, but I hit 30 easily and I know there's more but DH did the shopping this week so I'm not sure exactly which green veg we've got.

FigsOfFury · 11/05/2025 19:24

Sharptonguedwoman · 11/05/2025 07:28

Thank you! This is all such a doctrine of perfection (and a lot of expensive, out of season fruit.)
We are a small family and we live in a small house with pathetic kitchen space and one under the counter fridge and ditto freezer. So, space-where?
Also, One small pack of two lettuces would take us 3 meals to eat, let alone the cherries, mangoes etc listed above. How on earth do people eat all that, unless your family is considerably larger than mine, before it deteriorates?

We’re a family of 7, and my older children bring their boyfriends/girlfriends around regularly to eat. We also have friends and other family around for dinner fairly often aswell.

BrieAndChilli · 11/05/2025 19:25

Right now

Over 30, but I did sign up for Zoe last year, so really concentrated on hitting my 30, and it seems to have continued!

Away2000 · 11/05/2025 20:10

I have over 30, but then I have a child that basically lives on fruit and is really into trying all different types. I don’t think I eat over 30 as I like to eat the same things repeatedly, but my diet is majority vegetables and legumes.

Britinme · 11/05/2025 20:12

22 different fruit and veg in the fridge, 4 different fruit and veg in the freezer, 5 different fruit and veg in cans if you don't count beans (several different varieties of beans, both canned and dried, plus dried mushrooms), and walnuts and peanut butter for nuts. Didn't realise I had so many!

minnienono · 11/05/2025 20:20

? Don’t think so!

have a Lidl Chinese stir fry mix so that’s a few, also got spring onions, pak choi, sweetheart cabbage, carrots, peppers (3 coloursGrin,) green beans, purple sprouting broccoli, tenderstem broccoli, potatoes, sweet potatoes, olives, artichoke hearts, lettuce, cucumber, oranges and apples plus frozen forest fruits. Not too shabby but not 30, I’m not too keen on fruits if I’m honest so I don’t really eat them, dh does. I’m a veg person

I think most herbs can't count because we don't eat enough of them. DH might count chillies, maybe we can count garlic some weeks and maybe ginger. But a whole handful of freshvherbs or teaspoon of dried seems a LOT for one person.

GRex · 10/05/2025 19:55

Thanks! I'm not sure my preferred spice fajita counts, it's mostly salt. Then it's just chillies, garlic, pepper, maybe oregano and basil; I don't think the quantities are enough to count apart from DH's chillies.
Any ideas for bits for me to add Into the rotation? We like a lot of stir-fry, so we put a huge range in that. We don't tend to have cucumber, carrot, sweet potato, peas and other bits that others have a lot of; mostly because DH and DS aren't that keen. I might have missed corn off my list though, we do have lots of corn but I think I missed it in both the freezer and cupboard.

dates are delicious just now in case you didn't mention them.

pollymere · 11/05/2025 20:50

Yes, I usually do...
Fridge — tomatoes, baby tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, leeks, green beans, broccoli, green and black olives. Mango cubes (special treat), strawberries, raspberries, grapes. No blueberries because I suspect I'm allergic. Peppers of all colours. Beansprouts if we're planning stir-fry. Garlic paste and garlic. Usually mushrooms too. Carrots and parsnips when we fancy them. Occasionally some cabbage. Usually cherries or nectarines.
Cupboard — cannelini beans, borlotti beans, sweetcorn. Also tinned peaches, pears and fruit cocktail. Sometimes tinned pineapple.
Freezer — peas and broad beans. Frozen fruit such as raspberries.
Fruit bowl — bananas, apples, oranges, pears, satsumas. Sometimes a pineapple or a melon.

You may have taken this a little more seriously than intended. It's just an interesting little exercise, nobody needs to feel any particular way about it.
