Apparently I’m attention seeking

PooStep · 08/05/2025 08:17

Currently on holiday with DH, MIL, FIL, SIL and her husband.
Before we even got here they had all been going on about this specific breakfast in the specific restaurant that is a local speciality. It was decided we would go there on our first morning and get this item.
So first morning, this item is mentioned again and they’re all excited about getting it. The way they were going on I was assuming this item was all they sold in the morning so I said too I was up for trying it.

We got to the restaurant- sat down and FIL told the waitress we wanted 6 of said item. I then said “actually, I wouldn’t mind having a Quick Look at the menu?”. I saw MIL roll her eyes and I’m pretty sure SIL pulled a face too but can’t be certain. DH then whispered to me “don’t start this now for gods sake” !? Was asking for the menu really so bad? I’d noticed as we walked in that everyone was eating different things so clearly there was more on offer than this one item. I ended up choosing something different, I didn’t realise however that mine would take longer to arrive so I was sat without anything while they all ate theirs. SILs husband did say “shall we wait until Poostep’s arrives?” And MIL said “no I don’t think so, we came in for these didn’t we, I don’t want mine going cold”. So they all ate. Mine arrived 15 minutes later and naturally I was sat eating on my own after they all finished.
later DH asked me if I was going to be seeking attention throughout the holiday. So were they right to be annoyed?

Quite! I’m wondering how this works when one of the party is vegetarian or coeliac perhaps??

The Vegan eats vegetables & the Coeliac has gluten free. It's passive aggressive to create problems that don't really exist.

WildflowerConstellations · 08/05/2025 12:37

YABU, are Mrs Quick Look & not obeying the Unwritten Order of the Holiday.

Whatafustercluck · 08/05/2025 12:37

On the basis of the specific and original example you've provided, taken in isolation, then of course yanbu and they are. However, i also know a few people who are always contrary, seemingly only to make a point/ dig their heels in/ resist. It can become very wearing, and I did wonder if this might be the case with you, op. I've seen that you don't think you have form for this, so I have to go by what you've said. It doesn't sound like they like you, or you like them, very much. So I think you'd be better off not holidaying with them as a result as it doesn't sound much fun.

Very much so.first day away with all the family and Everyone excited about trying something new Together...and you had to go and do that??!!!you sound like a real brat tbh!

Everyone excited about trying something new together, so, what, op ruined that by having something different?

What are they, 6 years old? 😂😂

I'm cringing so hard at that possible version of events I think my sphincter is in danger of creating a black hole

friendshipover24 · 08/05/2025 12:38

Your husband is horrible and your in laws are controlling. It’s obvious they’ve been talking about you and your husband hasn’t stood up for you and is actively participating.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/05/2025 12:38

PrettyPuss · 08/05/2025 12:34

Do they all do everything the same? Quite odd!

Imagining the couple in ever decreasing circles, with their matching track suits. Or Airplane “he never has a second cup of coffee at home”. Shudder.

rookiemere · 08/05/2025 12:38

I keep thinking for the walk thing OP could have simply rewashed and dried her hair between 2-4 when she is forced to be inside.

It would drive me crazy having to wait for someone to dry their hair or “Oh gosh it goes frizzy” like I actually care. In my experience people who take a long time getting ready and make others wait, usually suffer from main character syndrome.

viques · 08/05/2025 12:39

Stop teasing OP. This is only Day One. No doubt there will be other trips to the Cafe of Mysterious Delights, you can keep them in suspense every morning, is @PooStep going to try the magic breakfast item or is she going to eat her way through a different menu item every day? If you are going to have a label tied around your neck you might as well have the label written in neon felt tips and embellished with flashing lights.

WayneEyre · 08/05/2025 12:40

On balance, I think you perhaps don't always read the room and there's a lot of dawdling over menus and drying hair.

However, they're extremely conformist so it's hard for you to know when it's important to be somewhere/ do/ try something particularly significant or when they just want everyone to fall in like like ducks for everything as that is all the time.

I get the impression they're quite controlling and you are a bit head in the clouds/ fussy. E.g. why did it matter that you wanted to go for a walk? But I think you take too long over things, ordering etc. I think it's a genuine clash. FWIW I think you'd all annoy me on holiday!!

NeverKnowinglyUnderstated · 08/05/2025 08:20

I feel there's more to this..... do you have a history of being difficult as why else would your husband say that?
Would it have really hurt to have gone along with everyone else?

Why would you even think eating what everyone else was eating is in any way reasonable?! Surely she’s able to choose for herself what she eats?

2024onwardsandup · 08/05/2025 12:40

It sounds like they might be controlling but one hundred per cent your actions are a passive aggressive response to this

MoistVonL · 08/05/2025 12:40

nomas · 08/05/2025 11:33

I can’t eat egg based desserts in the morning. I’m sure they would have hated it more if it had been me and I had thrown up all over the table.

Everyone is allowed to eat what they want.

But presumably you wouldn’t have said yes to joining them at the cafe for that specific item in the first place!

As opposed to “yes, sure, sounds good…oh wait, no, let me browse the menu and order something more substantial that will leave everyone waiting for me.”

And presumably there’s a fair chance of “no lunch for me, I had a big breakfast” followed be “can we get dinner early because I haven’t had lunch?”

If one out of six orders a cooked full breakfast when everyone else is getting light breakfasts, it throws off their dining rhythm from the other five. It’s a pain in the arse.

lazycats · 08/05/2025 12:41

Again, why is everyone bringing up allergies when the OP knew ahead of time what the breakfast would be and ostensibly agreed to it. Allergies are a non-issue.

I dunno. You might be expected to sit for 2 hours. Who washes their hair when everyone else is sitting?

Nearly 2,000 posts to the good and it looks like we'll never know what items on the menu caused Pistols at Dawn. Easter Sad

I agree with the PP who suggested next year's burnt offering from the OP will be "My terrible PiL have stopped inviting me on their all-expenses paid for family holiday. AIBU?"

You do sound like a bit of a fussy faffer, op. It’s hard work going away in a group with a fussy faffer because they always want something different, always seem to be on their own (often painstakingly slow) agenda and can never just go with the flow.

I’ll admit I have elements of it too op, as when I’m on holiday and especially paying for it I do like to feel as if I’m getting what I want out of it, however I do at least apologise when I am being ‘awkward’ and show some self-awareness. I’ll also know to bite my tongue and go with the flow even if the group wishes aren’t in alignment with my own because there’s an element of team work in making these trips, whether travelling around the world or on a weekend break, work for everyone.

Fussy faffer 😁
Thats exactly how I think of my DP.
He would be EXACTLY the same, always wants something different 'can you take the sauce off? / what's this mean? / will I like it? is there another menu?'
Always has to be the last to get ready to leave, if he is ready before someone else, he will then decide he needs the loo before we go etc.
Love him to bits but it drives me bonkers.

Calliopespa · 08/05/2025 12:43

BunnyLake · 08/05/2025 12:26

Ah yes. I’m on tenterhooks wanting to know 😁 I feel it can’t be something as prosaic as those tarts as you can get them anywhere now. I’ve bought them in my local Lidl, they’re nothing to get too excited about.

You can get croissants in Tesco too. They are not remotely the same as a freshly baked croissant from one if the better French patisseries.

We have lots of things on holiday that we return to because they are excellent local examples of a regional speciality. It’s just one little thing that makes holidays enriching and fun. I mean we could stay home and get it from Tesco I guess … 🤨

But that would have been conforming. And we know OP likes to be 'different'. 😀

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/05/2025 12:43

Dining rhythm? Jeez.
Every individual is at liberty to eat precisely what she or he desires. One of the delights of eating out. Have a bowl of soup
or full a la carte. No sane person cares!

Fridgetapas · 08/05/2025 12:43

I’m a bit split on this one! On the one hand it’s a bit odd for them to get so weird about the one thing and to be annoyed you got something different… on the other hand I do always get internally slightly annoyed when you go out with people for a Sunday roast and then they ask to look at the menu and get something completely different! You’re a bit like well the whole point was to come out for a roast dinner! Is it a similar situation? 😂

I also think it's about the shared experience than anything else. They probably wanted you to try the food they ordered. It looks like that was a big thing for them.

PooStep · 08/05/2025 09:44

PIL are paying for the holiday so like to control every aspect about it. Example being everyone sitting indoors between 2pm and 4pm. I get bored so went for a walk. This is also attention seeking apparently.

They all wanted to go to a specific place one morning. I was up for this. DH got up and went to get a coffee. Told me they’ll be setting off early so I jumped in the shower, washed my hair, came down for a coffee and they were all sat shoes on waiting to go out!! DH said “are you going to get your shoes on?” So I said “I have to dry my hair and have a quick coffee yet!” SIL started taking her shoes off clearly looking pissed off and MIL muttered “half the day will be gone by time we get going”. Nobody told me we were on a strict time schedule! If I’d known we had to be out by a certain time I’d have got ready earlier but DH said I was attention seeking by insisting on drying my hair and having a coffee when I knew they wanted to set off. If my hair dries naturally it goes incredibly frizzy and awful. He knows this.

You had to have a coffee before going for a coffee?

Sorry, a Quick Coffee before a Quick Look at Other Coffee.

AthWat · 08/05/2025 12:46

PassOnThat · 08/05/2025 12:26

If everyone is going to stop for a snack or a drink, it's polite to build in time to give people a chance to look at the menu or make their own choice.

This is the difference between holidays being arranged to meet everyone's needs and some people's needs being ignored.

To be so set on your own agenda that you'd happily ignore other people's food and drink preferences is just rude, especially if there's no real hurry and you're just put out that they don't want what you think they should have.

They passed them in the street. Someone said they looked nice. Someone else said "I'll get some, does everyone want one?" If your reaction to that scenario is also "Oooh, wait, I might want something else", then good for you.
