I've seen how bad it is. It's horrendous how people are living in some of the high rise flats.

Agree. Landlords are out of control in the uk and our inept government won’t touch the issue because renters are considered a sub class here (not normal in Europe)

Youagain2025 · 08/05/2025 00:42

It looks like the type of property uaed for temporary accommodation for homeless families.

Funnywonder · 08/05/2025 00:46

AlanShore · 07/05/2025 20:00

Why are you shocked?

Wise up. It’s a fucking health hazard. It costs £1800 a month. It’s a fucking health hazard. It’s filthy. Oh and it’s a fucking health hazard.

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/05/2025 00:47

This place is expensive for the area - edinburgh isn't cheap but there are many much nicer properties on the market in the immediate area for a chunk less.

It's also not an especially dodgy bit. Leith is very mixed and there are some...funky spots. But this isn't an omg run for the hills spot.

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/05/2025 00:48

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 08/05/2025 00:18

@StatisticallyChallenged that’s astonishing

Definitely same block, you can see layout, windows, even cupboard door in bedroom all matches.

seaelephant · 08/05/2025 01:04

To put it into perspective for those not local to Edi: a 1 bed next door to me (in a 'naice' area) is being let for £1000, and most people I know are paying £900-£1300 for their 1 or 2 beds. Leith is an fine enough area these days but it's historically been seen as a cheaper option so 1800 for that absolute monstrosity is madness and most likely a scam

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 08/05/2025 01:46

@StatisticallyChallenged good catch on that, yes the radiators and kitchen sinks/drainers are the same, such nice apartments, I’m just so aghast how all that black mould grew in there in a new build block.

user8636283907 · 08/05/2025 04:49

That's disgusting. £1800 a month for that.

Landlord should be utterly ashamed of themselves and I hope this goes viral.

Britain has a broken housing system.

Exactly. I know rents are out of control but this isn’t typical pricing for a house in this condition in Leith.

Not a bargain at all. He’s probably hoping to scam some clueless international student.

There’s even nicer 2 bed flats in London - where you expect rents to be higher than Edinburgh as salaries are often higher - for that price.

It may be more spacious than those London flats but who wants a big space full of mould, dirt and extremely old dated decor
and furnishings?

And maybe also because a lot of MPs and their mates are landlords.

arcticpandas · 08/05/2025 06:32

It's probably an illegal sublet: all the curtains are closed to make it difficult to identify precise location. Someone setting up a brothel with trafficked girls might be interested. It's really grim.

Tbrh · 08/05/2025 06:39

What a dump, does it even have any windows. Depressing if someone is desperate enough to live here

Tbrh · 08/05/2025 06:42

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/05/2025 00:13

YANBU, that is a shithole.

I know the area pretty well and I am fairly sure it is basically the same flat as this one here

https://www.onthemarket.com/details/16079120/

Amazing what a different not being gross makes!

If it is that's shocking, this one looks quite nice!

abracadabra1980 · 08/05/2025 09:31

@Youagain2025 or people trafficking/brothels.

amooseymoomum · 08/05/2025 10:48

seems like an average let at a reasonable price. unless its furnished probably sofas will be going with previous tenant or they have been put for dressing.
the carpets are a bit grubby but rented worse just chuck rugs over them

Chinnuy · 08/05/2025 10:56

Multiple people familiar with the area have stated this is vastly overpriced for a flat
in this condition within this area. I don’t know what you’re used to so I guess it’s all relative, but this flat is disgusting by most people’s standards and I’ve lived most of my adult life in private rent accommodation.

I think we have to push back again the normalisation of this kind of thing. The UK has a big issue with regulating the rental market. Sometimes it’s tax payers money going towards placing unfortunate people in homes like this - thanks to the genius idea of selling off all our housing stock.

LBFseBrom · 08/05/2025 18:11

I can't see mould but you can't tell from photos taken at night, they always make a place look dingey. . I wouldn't have thought a landlord would have a mouldy place photographed, he'd deal with the mould first which is not difficult. There should be a floor plan too.

The carpet is no doubt a bit stained but nothing a steam clean wouldn't put right.

Someone said it was a health hazard, how?

Anyway I note it is now up for £1,600 a month which seems reasonable enough to me.
