Currently in southern Italy in a beautiful small town in the mountains. Airb&B. The locals are clearly not used to tourists but have been so incredibly kind and welcoming.
The only problem is there isn’t a whole lot to do around here without driving for hours on death trap mountain roads 😂 it’s lovely and we’ve had a few lovely days out but DH is getting tired of all the driving and his suggestion is we leave here two days early and book two nights in Naples were we can explore Naples and Pompei.
Im worried about upsetting the host here who had gone way above and beyond to try and make this stay special for us. Part of me knows he’s making sense. We fly home from Naples on Sunday so we’d already be near the airport two days in advance.

YABU - you’ll upset the host and you should make the most of where you booked
YANBU - the host will understand and you’ll get more out of the holiday

OP you are massively overthinking this! Your host, whilst wanting you to have a great time, will probably be delighted to have the property back a few days early. It gives them longer to changeover before the next check in.

We don’t know the host personally, just found this house on AirB&B. We had originally booked Pompei but the host cancelled it so this was booked instead. I’m so glad we experienced this area but we are missing having stuff to do - even the churches are all closed. There are only two shops in the town, one is never open and the other one is extremely tiny only selling bare essentials. The one restaurant only opens one night a week so even to go out for a meal it’s driving on the mountain roads.

we absolutely do not expect or want any kind of refund

Naples is a bit of a shanty town we found… I’d recommend Sorrento which is quite close to Naples

LionAndEmperor13 · 07/05/2025 12:54

Naples is an incredible place, enjoy your visit!

Someone2025 · 07/05/2025 12:57

Dreco · 07/05/2025 10:17

No definitely not.

It will make no difference to the host really, they might even be happy as it will give them longer time to clean / tidy the property before the next guest arrives

Cherrysoup · 07/05/2025 13:06

Why would the host care?! Go, enjoy yourselves.

Oddsocksanduglyshoes · 07/05/2025 13:17

You need to try not to be such a people pleaser, put yourself first.

chaosmaker · 07/05/2025 13:19

@Dreco just go.. You've never met them so probably a key safe or something type set up. Just give them a lovely review on their property as the lack of local amenities is not their fault.

Whoistheeasterbunny · 07/05/2025 13:44

As someone who has worked in tourism, I 100 percent wouldn't blink an eyelid if you said "we've decided we'd like to see more of Italy and are going to head to Pompeii today instead of Sunday". You don't have to tell them it's because you're bored and hungry, you just tell them the positive side, which is you're wanting to see more of the country. İt's very normal to travel to a place and find yourself with a hunger to see more than planned, so please don't worry :)

timetotwist · 07/05/2025 13:46

Pompeii is really interesting and pretty big so get there early to avoid the crowds and wear good footwear, a sunhat, lots of water....ooh, I sound like yer mum!

Sorento is nice as a resort town. Ferry to Capri (expensive place!) is possible.

I quite liked Naples' raffish charm but it has a rough side, lot of graffiti and some street crime. Lots of nice places along the Amalfi coast. Where are you staying now out of interest as I may want to avoid it. Love Italy but need things to do.

Mumofone1993 · 07/05/2025 14:35

I really recommend Sorrento for a day visit, very near Pompeii and Vesuvius. Hope you have a great rest of your holiday :)

Maray1967 · 07/05/2025 14:41

Just say how beautiful it is there and how much you have loved the peace and calm. Say you’ve realised you can visit Pompei and Herculaneum(H is fabulous - brilliant mosaics) if you leave early so you’ve decided to do that.

Vesuvius is well worth visiting as well. We did V in a morning and then went on to H. P needs the best part of a day.

Swiftie1878 · 07/05/2025 14:44

YANBU, but don’t stay in Naples (it’s a bit grim), head further south to Sorrento. Still easy access to Pompei and a much nicer place to explore.

Who is the host? A friend or family member or do you mean an air BnB type host. If the former then yes you might appear rude, if the latter I doubt they'll care as long as you're not expecting a refund.

It does say in the post Air b&b.

Munnygirl · 07/05/2025 14:48

Just do it. Naples is a great city and you won’t regret going there

CloudywMeatballs · 07/05/2025 14:54

Hopefully you've learnt your lesson to do more research on an area before booking next time.

But of course it's not "rude" to leave an Airbnb early! You've paid for the use of it. You can come and go as you wish. And even if it was rude, so what? (Presumably you're not planning on going back.) It's not necessary to make up some excuse or announce that you're leaving. Do everything that's asked of you for departure and just leave.

I wouldn't necessarily leave a glowing review either, unlike some previous posters. Be honest. If the house itself is perfect then say so. But I would also mention that it's in the middle of nowhere, the roads are treacherous, and often the shops and restaurants are closed. Don't you wish one of the previous reviewers had mentioned those things? It might sound like heaven to someone who wants to spend their time relaxing and is happy to stock up on supplies on the way, but you might save another family from having the same experience you are.

I would definitely agree with the above. I read Air BnB reviews for this reason. It does not have to be nasty. Just phrase it that it is perfect for someone who wants a relaxing rural idyll away from the hustle and bustle but just be aware that ...

It would improve the holiday of the next person who books if they were prepared. The price of the Air BnB should also reflect the downsides otherwise if someone were paying top dollar, they would be a very unsatisfied customer and give problems for the landlord.

whitewineandsun · 07/05/2025 16:25

That's Olympic levels of people pleasing and overthinking. He got his money. Just go.

Gerwurtztraminer · 07/05/2025 16:38

Have you been to Naples before? If not then do go, I love it. Don't get put off by people saying it's horrible or dirty or dangerous - most of the people who say that have either never been or rushed through on the way to the Amalfi coast. Which is gorgeous but also full of British tourists and restaurants selling full English breakfasts. Naples has charm and authentic character (and lots of great food!).

The archaeological museum has loads of amazing things taken from Pompeii and Herculaneum and is a must see. If you can, visit the San Sansevero Chapel to see the Veiled Christ- most astonishing marble statue I've ever seen.

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 08/05/2025 18:15

Are you near the Amalfi coast? Try hopping on a bus and investigate the area. Ask your host if there are any villages/towns celebrating their feast day. Have you visited Ravello?

Beautifulweeds · 08/05/2025 19:24

Not expecting a refund, host will happy I'm sure and not surprised you would want to go further afield to explore. Please do it, so many beautiful places to see, would be mad not to. Adventure, yey! Xxx

ExitPursuedByABare · 08/05/2025 19:26

Naples is fabulous.

90swithcigarettesandalcohol · 08/05/2025 20:28

Naples seems marmite - people either think it's brilliant or a dump on this thread, I'm intrigued now!

zenai · 08/05/2025 20:40

Me too re Naples. I want to go to Herculaneum and Pompeii, on my own though as it would bore the pants of my usual travelling companions, and their moans would do me in!

I think Naples sounds quite edgy but very vibrant and interesting, authentic if you like, but as a solo traveller I'd just worry about safety. But I'm probably overthinking it again.

It's a big city...I can only assume those who think it's a dump are going to the wrong part!
I've been a few times, it's so incredibly vibrant and fun. Brilliant nightlife, so much to see, food is fantastic, and it's cheap...what's not to love?

Cariadm · 09/05/2025 04:35

Sorry but this is taking the whole not wanting to 'offend' or 'upset' someone else to another level and is so 'old school Britishness' it's almost comical!! 😂
I appreciate that you sound like a nice considerate and kind person which obviously is not to be criticised BUT common sense should surely tell you that renting an Airbnb is a business arrangement usually with a total stranger who, unless you're asking for a refund or any other consideration to do with leaving early, will NOT be in the least bit bothered, annoyed, upset, offended or any other negative emotion you would or could imagine!! 🙄
This isn't the 1950's where certain protocols must be adhered to and appearances kept up FFS!!! Just do what you want and enjoy the rest of your precious holiday!! 😊
