Currently in southern Italy in a beautiful small town in the mountains. Airb&B. The locals are clearly not used to tourists but have been so incredibly kind and welcoming.
The only problem is there isn’t a whole lot to do around here without driving for hours on death trap mountain roads 😂 it’s lovely and we’ve had a few lovely days out but DH is getting tired of all the driving and his suggestion is we leave here two days early and book two nights in Naples were we can explore Naples and Pompei.
Im worried about upsetting the host here who had gone way above and beyond to try and make this stay special for us. Part of me knows he’s making sense. We fly home from Naples on Sunday so we’d already be near the airport two days in advance.

YABU - you’ll upset the host and you should make the most of where you booked
YANBU - the host will understand and you’ll get more out of the holiday

Are you sharing the driving?

If not, I don't think it's really your decision.

Catsandcannedbeans · 07/05/2025 10:45

Okay OP I’ll do you a solid. You guys head to Naples and I’ll hold fort at the AirBnB. Since it’s you I’ll do it for free. Dutiful as ever I know.

On a serious note, I don’t think the host will be offended since you’re not asking for a refund. They might even be happy about it because it’s one less thing to worry about for two days.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 07/05/2025 10:45

As long as not expecting a refund i think your fine to leave early, if they ask why just explain you've decided while your there you really want to see Pompeii etc. Try and do Herculaneum too, that was a really interesting site.

ArminTamzerian · 07/05/2025 10:46

Just go. Naples is amazing

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 07/05/2025 10:47

How quickly can you pack and leave !

as the airb+b is fully paid for - you don't owe the host anything, just pack and leave the place clean and tidy and go...

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 07/05/2025 10:47

And if time (might not be) can get the ferry to Capri, such a beautiful island.

Was just about to write this exact comment. One of my favourite places I've ever been to!

BobbyBiscuits · 07/05/2025 10:49

They won't be upset you left early if you still paid the full amount. They'll probably be relieved. If they could have someone pay and not bother come that would probably be their favourite guest! Honestly just say we've now got plans to see Pompeii (I thought it was great. And mount Vesuvius) and go.
They will not mind one bit. Especially If you give them a good review.

beetr00 · 07/05/2025 10:53

@Dreco Hopefully you're packing your bags right this very minute 😆

It's such a beautiful country, go and enjoy a wee surprise detour with your husband 🌻

Twiglets1 · 07/05/2025 10:56

Dreco · 07/05/2025 10:17

No definitely not.

Then it’s fine to leave early and shouldn’t upset the host.

ItGhoul · 07/05/2025 10:58

Of course it wouldn't be rude. You're not asking for the money back. The host will now simply have some extra time to clean and prepare the property for their next guests, that's all. They're running a business - they're not friends doing you a favour and your departure will make no difference to them.

GatherlyGal · 07/05/2025 10:59

How terribly British and polite of you to worry about the feelings of an Airbnb host who is making money out of your stay by leaving early!

OP but this has made me chuckle. You will never see this person again and, I may be wrong here, he is unlikely to give a tiny shite about you changing your holiday plans.

cockadoodledandy · 07/05/2025 10:59

You won’t get any money back on the booking so there’s no detriment to the host.

You should probably do more research before booking somewhere in future though.

Pompei is lovely but in my opinion Naples is a dump.

Lavender14 · 07/05/2025 11:01

Just tell them the truth, that the stay has been lovely but you want a city vibe and less driving. If you're not looking a refund then it's fine. I wouldn't be losing out on an opportunity like that just for fear of offending someone you'll not see again.

MariLlwyd · 07/05/2025 11:01

If it would make you more comfortable a little white lie to your host that you've got friends coming to Naples and you'd like to join them...?
Naples is wonderful - 3000 years of history, art, architecture and culture set in a sublime landscape. Oh and it's barking mad too.
Enjoy!

RockGirl · 07/05/2025 11:02

You should definitely go to Pompeii, it is worth seeing.

Cyclebabble · 07/05/2025 11:04

I have done this in Italy with no issue. Plans change, no one will be offended. Pompei I found interesting and bits of Naples are nice, but would you be better with a couple of days on the Amalfi coast?

ShodAndShadySenators · 07/05/2025 11:04

Definitely go to Naples, there's loads to do and see around that area. Plus you have the metro and buses so don't need to drive around if you don't want to. Pompei has its own train station (in fact two iirc) and Herculaneum is just down the line and worth seeing.

AirB&B host won't care in the slightest, they're running a business, not being your best friend.

This absolutely! I don’t like Naples at all. Pompei and Herculaneum are both great to visit. Why on Earth didn’t you research this Airbnb? Next time, check reviews and look at a map.

Dreco · 07/05/2025 11:04

It’s booked 🥰 just to add though we were going to do Pompeii anyway - just it was going to be a two hour drive there and a two hour drive back … and then another 2 hour drive back to the airport on Sunday 😂

I know, I’m terribly British

I did research it - I just underestimated how treacherous the roads are. Plus I read there were shops and restaurants nearby - which there are - they’re just never open 😂

honestly it’s a lovely town with lovely people but I guess I’m not as cut out for rural life as I thought I was. Currently I’m sat here starving - no restaurants, no cafes, no shops open … it’s an eye opener and certainly an experience

OP posts:
Dreco · 07/05/2025 11:11

Oh and one good thing - I’m losing weight here 😂

its completely our own fault, we should have been more organised

GinAndJuice99 · 07/05/2025 11:13

Yeah I'd just leave then message to say you had to leave early. They'll have forgotten you by next week.

ginasevern · 07/05/2025 11:15

You sound like me OP, I'd be worried about offending too. But if you aren't asking for a refund and you tell the host how lovely your stay was, then they'll probably be pleased to have 2 extra days without guests. Naples is amazing - lots of delicious food, wine and coffee and history! Pompeii and Herculaneum are mind blowing. Go and make the most of it.

aurynne · 07/05/2025 11:21

The host won't give a flying cazzo.
