To spend £1,900 on a rug?

I love it so much.
I've been looking at it for over 1 year and I love it as much now as I did when I first saw it.
I've spent a year looking at rugs and haven't found any I particularly like.
This one, I love!
It's 3 metres x 2 metres.
Am I mad to spend this on a rug?
It would fill the floor space in our lounge.
Would sit on top of a wooden floor.
For context, I bring home £1,500 per month.
We are going camping in England for our family summer holiday.
We are not well off! At all!
But I love this rug and there is an option to pay it off monthly at zero % interest.....
I feel like it's wrong to spend this much on a rug but equally I really wish to have it!!

@Bamburghbee here's the seller https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/2014ladybird
Looks like the prices have gone up a bit, but still very reasonable, I'd say its still totally worth it. (I have no association to them btw, I'm just a v pleased customer!)

Thanks everyone for your replies!
Divided opinions, I can see.
To try and answer questions:
The size I'd be buying would cover most of our lounge floor space, with the wooden floor around the edge of the rug. This isn't a little fireside rug. It will be the whole floorspace.
I got quotes to carpet our lounge and for decent quality wool carpets plus underlay plus the cost of fitting, the quotes weren't too far off the price of this rug TBH.
Wool.......I hear the advice re moths. This wouldn't stop me from buying a wool rug. I've been looking at anti moth treatment sprays made especially for wool rugs that are sold ftom high end rug shops.
I don't have any pets.
My DC are past the age of felt tip stains on flooring or vomiting over the floor.
I wouldn't actually be precious about it. If it gets marked or stained, whatever. I'm not going to be standing there telling my family or guests not to eat/drink/walk/stand on my beautiful rug.
Money.......well that's the whole issue isn't it.
I can just about afford the repayments. It'll be a big deal for me each month. But I can do it. I'd view it as a finite period of time to make the repayments. It's 0% interest on a £1,400 loan (I'd pay my £500 all in one go and have £1,400 left to repay monthly at 0% interest).
Home repairs fund for broken boiler etc. - I've got that. It's ringfenced for such things. I'm not touching it for this rug.

Given this update (no pets older kids etc), and the passion for it I can see in all your other posts, id probably go for it tbh. Life is short and sometimes these things give us just the lift we need- you've hankered after it for a year its not like its a frivolous purchase. And you aren't touching practical money ringfenced elsewhere.. do you have an OH? What do they say?

@AlmostCutMyHairToday sound lovely, please can you share a link?

It's in the post six above yours by OverlyInvestedinthisthread, Today 00:11.

HonoraBridge · 22/05/2025 16:38

Depending on the type of rug, that is not a lot of money.

CountryMouse22 · 22/05/2025 17:17

I've just spent £70 for two runners from Dunelm (I mean the rugs not the athletes)!

AlertCat · 22/05/2025 20:26

@Theyalwaysknewbest i just visited the link on p1 and the rug in 3x2m is less than the price you posted, and there is only 1 left online. So in your position I would buy it right now!

Wool is very good for rugs- my dc spilt milk on ours once and after an hour in the sun it didn’t even smell. Almost unbelievable, but it did happen like that. Buy it and enjoy it!

fantastiq · 22/05/2025 21:35

If you don't have 50000 in the bank then you can't afford a 2000 rug.... live by your means. That rug is not for you. It's for people with money to waste

Justsomethoughts23 · 23/05/2025 04:20

Theyalwaysknewbest · 04/05/2025 21:39

I have managed to save up £500 towards it.
I don't have much money left at the end of each month.
It's taken me a year to save £500.

When I first read this I thought absolutely buy the rug but seeing that it’s taken you a year to save £500 it would be absolutely insane and irresponsible to do so.

She can’t buy it right now because she only has £500 and wouldn’t be able to make the repayments on the credit option.

Did OP confirm that’s the rug as JL sell a lot of wool rugs and it could be any.

ScarletBeret · 23/05/2025 05:37

I’m afraid I wouldn’t on a rug. I’d try and find a cheaper one so that I wouldn’t be worried about cats/ moths/ spillages.

I have a rug in my dining room that I paid £80 for second hand. (Huge, wool) I still love it, but it doesn’t cause me palpitations when the cats scratch it.

Ah, I see.

She doesn’t want to share the exact rug because then her friends might know and she’d be outed. Which is fair enough.

Cakencookieobsessed · 23/05/2025 08:33

I wouldn't. I've been on a similar income and managed to pay off a similarly priced item without too much hardship but it was an essential item and I could have done without the money coming every month and going on that. I wouldn't for the sake of a rug. You have expensive taste but if you don't have the finances to support it, it's not worth getting in debt over.

Peony15 · 23/05/2025 08:34

100 % I'd get it.
Never regretted buying something I looked at for a long time repeatedly but always remembered the things I didn't buy but loved instantly, even decades ago.
At that price you buy quality that lasts a long time
You look at it AND use it multiple times daily , always spend top money on items that ( e.g mattresses, sofas , taps , cutlery , shoes etc ) are high use.
A rug is like a work of art too, getting joy out of it daily is priceless.
It's actually cheaper in the long run to get one well made item or nice peace of furniture.
Yes it's more than a months salary but long term it's worth it. Pay cheap, pay twice my grandmother drummed into me.
Plus it's better to buy things that need replacing less.

thegirlwithemousyhair · 23/05/2025 10:50

Is it one of those oriental Kazak rugs?

Very nice and they're quality rugs that tend to hold their value pretty well.
I would definitely buy one but not if money was tight and it took years to save £500. Definitely shop around for similar rugs...

thegirlwithemousyhair · 23/05/2025 11:08

I bought a beautiful big thick wool Brink and Campman rug from TK Maxx for £199. Keep your eyes peeled - they often have nice rugs in, including wool.

Frillysweetpea · 23/05/2025 13:15

atlanta1 · 04/05/2025 21:44

It’s a lot of money but I think investing in something you love for a space you spend lots of time relaxing in and enjoying, isn’t a bad idea - but - do you have kids or animals? What colour pattern - will it get grubby or show spills? Accidental damage cover on insurance? The answers to those would massively influence my decision.

I agree with this. In addition to the 'points for' you should think how many times you have bought cheap and then bought twice because it didn't last. Free credit can be a really useful way to furnish you home with quality items that stand the test of time. If you've been looking for a year and still love it you are clearly not the impulsive type so should manage this kind of loan responsibily.

Viviennemary · 23/05/2025 15:02

Why not. You only live once. But make sure its what you want.

Catsbreakfast · 23/05/2025 15:07

Check eBay, you might find it at a lower price than directly from the retailer

upsofloating · 08/03/2026 19:17

Did you buy it, OP?
